Chapter 24

The next day, the elderly couple accompanied us to the road. Daniel waved his hand and said goodbye. The elderly couple smiled and reminded us to be careful on the way. However, as they turned around, I saw them wiping away their tears in the rearview mirror. It pierced my heart.
"Did she tell you?" Brian came to my room when we returned home that evening.
"Yes," I replied.
He walked over and played with the trinkets in my room.
"Do you know who the oil painting was prepared for?"
"Ah? Who?" I was a bit puzzled.
"She cherished it for a long time. It was a present for Daniel's wedding," he said calmly.
"She is a kind lady. Unfortunately, her eyesight declined." He paused for a moment. "After her son passed away, she cried every day, and her eyesight completely disappeared."
I felt a pang in my heart.
"So... I shouldn't take it..." I didn't know what to say.
"You dare to accept it," he looked at me with disdain.
"But you told me to accept it."
"When did you become so obedient?" He stared at me.
"In that case, I'll return it." I wanted to pack up and leave.
But he grabbed my hand and retorted, "Since when does one accept something and then return it?"
"What should I do then?" I was going crazy.
"What else can you do..." He lowered his head, looked at me, and said, "Keep it for when we have our wedding."
"A wedding?" I was shocked.
"Don't you want that?" He looked at me intently. "Even Grandpa wants us to have a wedding."
"But!" I was getting anxious.
"Clam down..." he comforted me.
"There's still a month left, giving you some time to prepare," he said, patting my shoulder. Then, he walked towards the door.
Suddenly, everything became clear in my mind. I knew what the problem was—whether he liked me or not!
If he didn't like me, our marriage was already a mistake, and having a wedding would just compound the error.
"Brian," I called out to him right before he closed the door.
"Yes?" He stopped and turned back to look at me.
I hesitated on how to ask. Asking someone if they like you was difficult to put into words.
Seeing that, he turned his whole body around, leaning against the door frame, and said, "Should we try to sleep in the master bedroom tonight?"
I... In an instant, I blushed, unable to ask that question anymore.
"No..."
"Tomorrow, I won't ride your car; I'll take a taxi." I threw a sentence at him, then turned around and ignored him.
"Suit yourself," he replied, uninterested, and closed the door.
