Chapter 27
"This is the first time I've seen her in 27 years.
Everything about her, I only learned from my grandmother's words.
I've imagined that if one day I were to meet her, would she embrace me and call me sister?
Would she cry and say that she missed me all these years? Or would she treat me as a complete stranger? But I didn't expect that our first meeting would be in such a setting. The heavens have a sense of humor.
I calmly told her that she has a mother who lives in the slums and misses her a lot, while I am now married to Brian.
She stood there, utterly unconcerned about her mother's well-being or how she was doing, focusing only on one thing.
"You, someone from the slums, have no shame. What right do you have to marry Brian?"
"But I'm his wife. What right do you have to compete with me?"
I stood there in a daze.
"And I'm his son's mother!" She looked shocked at my words.
Brian looked shocked overall.
"Make time to go back and visit your mother, she really misses you." I sighed and didn't want to argue with her anymore.
"My mother is in the UK. Does she think she can treat me as a daughter just because she lives in the slums? How laughable. If she needs money, she should just say it!"
Cecilia stood with her hands on her hips, an arrogant posture that made me sad.
"Even if I were begging, I wouldn't ask you for a penny." I turned around, not letting my tears fall.
I thought of my mother.
That foolish woman, every May on our sister's birthday, she is tormented by longing, yet her beloved daughter doesn't recognize her. It's truly ironic.
"Get out." Brian's voice was filled with suppressed anger.
"Brian, you..."
"I don't want to repeat it a second time."
Cecilia stomped her feet angrily and ran out crying.
