Chapter 54
I walked out of the school, hoping to avoid Sonia and Maddison on the way. I kept my head lowered and eyes fixed on the ground.
Once I stepped out of the building, the sun hit my eyes and blinded me momentarily, forcing my sight to adjust to the change of lighting and when I could finally see again, I looked around in search for Adam so that he can give me a ride home but I finally noticed that something was wrong.
Something in my gut told me that this wasn't good, that something bad was going to happen. I stayed rooted on the spot, trying to grasp the faint shouts and yells in the distance. I tried to pinpoint the direction they were coming from. My head whipped to the side, finally able to distinguish where the noises were coming from.
Looking around and seeing that Adam hadn't appeared yet, I made a fleeting decision and jogged around to the side of the school where the stadium was.
The second I saw how big the crowd was, I knew something was terribly wrong. Even when the biggest jock had a full-out brawl with his best mate because he found his girlfriend screwing him, the crowd wasn't as big this one was.
I elbowed my way through, hitting my head on people's arms numerous times, gritting my teeth in annoyance. When I finally caught sight of what was happening, I immediately broke out from the circle of spectators and ran to the middle where the fight was happening. I screamed at the top of my lungs but they were still going at it.
It wasn't a fair fight. Five guys, all of them jocks with their huge built was circling a guy with familiar features like he was their prey. They kept on landing blows and when I caught a glimpse on the victim's condition, I didn't even give my secret a second thought, I didn't think about how they would find out, how I would be putting everything at stake. I just barreled through without a second thought, throwing my whole priority out the window with one thing in my head; Adam.
Three guys were holding him down and although I saw that he was struggling and fighting against their hold, throwing his head back and successfully head-butting one of them, he wouldn't be able to win this fight. It didn't matter that he was a street fighter, if I didn't do anything, he would have been done for.
I dropped everything, my bag, my files, my books and ran towards them. With one leap, I jumped onto one of the jocks that was hitting Adam and wrung him by the neck and held him in a gullet-in choke, sliding off his side as I kept his neck in the crook of my arm. I screamed once again and this time they heard me. I held their undivided attention.
I was no longer the nerd they saw me for the last two years, I was Pixie, a street fighter they should fear because right now, Pixie's out for blood. All I could see was red, all that was in my head was getting them to stop hurting the guy I love.
"Let him go or you won't be seeing your friend for the next month." I said in a steely tone, my expressions scrubbed off everything. No one messes with the people I love.
Slowly they let Adam go and I released my hold on their friend, leaving him to struggle to get air into his lungs, running to Adam's side and helping him up. I could see from his wounds that they hurt him real bad and I felt my anger rising. Those bastards.
"Hey," Adam smiled weakly, the cut on his lips opening wider and I could tell it caused him pain because he quickly stopped trying to smile.
I shook my head at his antics and my hand snaked behind him, holding him by his side and I took his arm, slinging it around me. I let him lean on me and beared his weight, causing me to grunt slightly at how heavy he was. Damn, why couldn't he weigh like a tiny puppy, it could've saved me a lot trouble.
"What happened?" I asked him seriously while helping him stand on his feet but he just shook his head silently.
"I don't know, they jumped me and caught me off guard, held me down and started beating me." I felt my insides boil at what he said. I know this must be the other way in stories but I didn't mind saving this baboon's ass any day.
"Let's go," I forced out, helping him walk a couple of steps before we were stopped by a voice.
Sonia.
"So you can fight."
Adam tried straining his neck to face her so I halted mid-step and helped him turn around to face the devil's spawn herself. I looked at her with a blank expression. Why is she asking this now?
She's a blind bitch.
This time, I gladly agreed with my conscience but once I saw her smirk, I knew she had something to do with what happened to Adam.
She did this.
It was bait.
How could someone be so damn cruel? I wanted to lunge at her and beat her to horse shit but Adam needed me as support and so, I continued to give her an expressionless facade.
"Yes, she can."
I looked to Adam and he raised his hand as if to say that he didn't say anything. I knew the voice was to feminine to be a guy's so who would have said it?
I turned slightly only to come face to face with Maddison who had a rock hard expression and at the sight of her, I could feel my curiosity grow. Why defend me? She wanted me dead because of what happened to Bryant and from what I saw that night at the party where I met Dom and Monic, she was Sonia's acquaintance.
"Bryant taught her long ago, I watched them train multiple times." Her gaze flickered to me, telling me to get out of there and I gave her a slight nod; nothing less, nothing more. After what she did to me all those years, it's going to take a shit load more to gain my sympathy back.
"Let's go," I whispered to Adam in a low tone, helping him walk and letting Maddison deal with Sonia.
I helped Adam limp to his bike and at first, I was worried on who will drive but since people found out I could fight, I decided that I'm going to go all out now.
Helping Adam on his bike and gently helping him put his helmet on, I slipped onto the space in front of him and kicked the stand, strapping on my own helmet and starting the engine before pulling out of there. I let Adam hold onto me by my waist and rode all the way to my house. A piece of advice; don't ever try to speed up when you have a half conscious and beaten guy on the bike.
Let's just say, I don't think Adam will let me drive anytime soon after what he went through.
By the time we reached my house, it was already 4 in the evening. I got off the bike, took an excruciating 10 minutes to help Adam off and another 15 minutes to finally get him to sit on the couch while I scour the house for some first aid kit to tend to his wounds. I jogged up the stairs to my room and searched the drawers for them. I finally found the small box and raced back down the stairs. I got to the living room where Adam was lying down with his eyes closed. I knelt down beside the couch, on the carpeted floor and squeezed into the space between the couch and the coffee table.
One of his eyes was starting to swell and I could feel the guilt bubbling up. Out of nowhere, his hand shot out and grabbed mine, stroking my knuckles.
"It's okay, Case. It's not your fault," he shushed me, caressing the side of my face with the back of his hand with a small smile on his face, trying not to stretch the cut on his lip.
I shook my head, "Have you seen the state you are in? You're beat and don't even try denying that it wasn't because of me. We both know that it was Sonia. She set it all up because she suspected that I could fight."
He chuckled lightly but winced in pain not long after, causing me to panic. My hands flew quickly to the small first aid kit box and pried it open swiftly, taking out the gauze, painkillers and all sorts of ointments. I quickly got to work on patching him up which, unfortunately for me, required him to take his shirt off so that I could inspect the wounds on his torso and back.
I tried to keep the blush to a minimum and remained indifferent but who the hell was I kidding. There was no way I could've pulled it when he was sitting there, black and blue but still undeniably hot as hell.
"Oh shut up, you old woman. I'm fine, just bruised up," before I could even interrupt him and tell him how much of an understatement it was, he continued on with his speech, not letting me cut him.
"We suspect that it was Sonia. We don't have proof that she did because she wanted to confirm her suspicions although she did imply it. However, the fact stands that you are in no way responsible for what happened to me. So stop beating yourself up-"
When I finally got tired of his boring lecture, I did the weirdest, most non-Casey like thing to do; I looked into his dark green orbs, grabbed his jaw gently and kissed him.
