The Threat
“HOW CAN we get rid of them?” Isla asked as she glanced once again at the back.
Zero stepped on the gas a speed the car swiftly.
Instead of answering, he asked, “What do you think, baby?”
Isla frowned a little bit; a thumping knocked her heart. “You need to find a deserted place or an open area.”
“No people…” Zero smiled.
“Don’t tell me they will fire at us?” she asked. Curiosity evaded her system as excitement jolted her chest.
She saw how Zero crept a smirk on his lips. “Aren’t you getting nervous, baby?” he asked, and he drifted to the left, entering the left highway, which is bound to the mountains.
“A little,” she replied.
Zero let out a soft chuckle as he glanced into the side mirror once again. “Damn,” he cursed, making Isla frown and glance at the back.
Soon as he darted her gaze at the foes, her eyes widened in awe. “Gun!” she exclaimed. “Faster, Zero,” she commanded.
Zero let out a chuckle again. “If we’re gonna entertain those, you’ll be late for school,” he said.
Isla frowned. “I don’t care. Besides, I excel in every subject. One absence is not a big deal,” she replied proudly.
“That’s my girl,” Zero uttered. “Now, get my gun below your seat,” he demanded.
Isla frowned but then leaned down and looked for the gun.
“There’s a drawer in there,” he said.
Isla then groped for the drawer, and she gasped when she pulled it. Inside was a black gun.
“That was Magnum. One of the high-powered guns. Can you use it?” Zero breaks the abrupt silence.
Isla grabbed it gently. She gasped when it felt heavy. However, the excitement inside her every time she held a gun lingered.
She smirked. “Of course,” she replied.
“Great,” Zero smiled, “Now, you just need to shoot the car tires,” he added.
Isla nodded and got into her serious mode. “You need to slow us down. Our distance is quite far from them,” she said.
“Duck!” Zero blurted when the enemies on the backfired at them.
Isla cursed inside her head. “She could feel the excitement, but the fact that they may get killed resided.
“Slow it down,” she said as she unlocked the car door. “Next time, use your bulletproof car,” she added.
She opened the door and moved to the left when someone shot in that direction.
“Careful!” Zero shouted.
“Copy,” she smiled and waited for the enemies to reload. She gritted her teeth while waiting, eager to shoot their tires.
“Just the front tires and we’re good,” Zero said, making her nod.
She took a deep breath and sighed before she cocked the gun.
The enemies stopped firing at their means to say they needed to reload, but Isla knew that not all of them reload their guns, so she needed to be cautious.
She took a peek, slightly, bending her body on the seat, and aimed for the car’s right tire in the back right corner.
She shot, but she missed making her curse.
“You can do it, baby. One more,” Zero cheered amidst their situation.
She fired another bullet, and this time she hit it. Afterward, they heard a screech—a sign that the car slows down.
She swiftly gets up and closes the door when the enemies fire at them once again.
Zero stepped on the accelerator and sped away.
“One down,” Zero counted, “one more to get rid of,” he added.
Isla smiled. “Guess I need more practice. I lost the first shot.”
Zero let out a soft chuckle as he drifted his car to the left. “You’re great, baby. And you’re making me fall into you deeply.”
Isla frowned and cursed aloud when their foes fired their bullets in their direction.
“Can you pick the situation while saying those words,” she uttered and rolled her eyes. “Shit!” she cursed again when the enemies shot at them. “We need to get rid of the last one, Zero,” she added.
Zero smiled. “Yes, boss,” he replied, getting amazed with Isla. Who would’ve thought that his girl was as fierce as the goddess of war, Athena?
Isla is different. She’s smart, and unlike other girls, she’s fierce and a fighter.
He saw how Isla leaned backward as she opened the door. She fired the gun—and he couldn’t help but let his eyes turn into a heart shape while he took a glimpse at her.
That gun that she was holding is heavy—even he could feel that, but for Isla, it seems like it was just a plushie, which is light and soft.
He got back to his senses when he heard the slam of the car door.
He glanced at her.
“Mission Accomplished,” Isla reported and let out a smile. She clicked the safety pin of the gun, pulled the drawer below her seat, and put back the gun inside.
Zero frowned.
“You haven’t sweat?”
Isla looked at him and arched her brow. “The weather is cold,” she replied and pulled down the mirror, and fixed her hair.
Zero shook his head and glanced at the side mirror. And smiled when he saw that no one was tailing them.
“You did a great job, baby,” he complimented.
“Thank you, Mr. Cohen,” she teased and let out a soft laugh.
Isla glanced at her wristwatch, and she still had thirty minutes left before the start of her first class in the afternoon.
“Drop me at school,” she said.
“I thought you’re gonna take absent—”
“I’m sure Becca is waiting for me, baby. And you knew your cousin,” she said.
“Why can’t you call me ‘baby’ always?” Zero averted the topic.
Isla smirked. “Sure—”
“Thank y—”
“—I will try,” Isla cut off.
Zero shook his head in disbelief.
Zero took a detour and dropped Isla off at the university. “I’ll pick you up later. No buts and excuses,” he directed.
Isla cocked her brow. “I didn’t even utter any word,” she said and let out a smile as she opened the door on her side.
But before that, she gave a peck on Zero’s lips. “See you, baby,” she said, partly teasing him.
Zero smiled and sped away.
Soon as she arrived at the entrance, she almost screamed when Troy abruptly called her name.
“What’s wrong with you?” she asked and continued to walk inside. She tapped her phone and sent a text message to Becca. (Let’s meet in the room.)
“So, that was your husband?”
Isla didn’t bother to reply.
“It’s the famous Zero Cohen, huh? So, what happened with the car?”
She stopped and pinched the bridge of her nose. Zero dropped her under the oak tree, it’s a few meters away from the entrance. How did he know about the car?
“Oh, my bad. I just saw you. I was on the field—”
“Just mind your own business, Troy,” she said and started to walk once again.
Troy formed a sly smirk on his lips. “Couldn’t your husband afford a nicer car?”
Keep calm, Isla. Keep calm! She keeps on chanting those words inside her head and completely ignores Troy Angelo.
“Zero was known to be a monster. How did you end up being a husband and wife.”
One last time, self. Isla stopped and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “What do you think? And can’t you understand that I am already taken—that I can’t be with a jerk like you?”
Troy grinned. “What Troy’s want, Troy’s get,” he said meaningfully and left her dumbfounded.
Seriously?
What’s wrong with that guy?
She thinks it will be better if he will tell this matter to Zero. If that Troy doesn’t stop pestering her, she will just stay at home and do the online class.
Geez, she wanted a peaceful life.
“What’s with the frown?” Becca asked the moment that she got inside their room. She glanced at Troy, who was laughing with his buddies, and heaved a deep sigh.
Becca noticed it, making her forehead crease. “Did Troy pester you again? What is he up to?” she asked.
“Don’t look in his direction. You will just draw his attention towards us.”
Becca sighed and pouted her lips. “Zero needs to know this. I have a feeling that this Troy won’t stop until he gets what he wants—you know, those typical rich guys who lack their parents’ comfort—those undisciplined brats.”
“I will tell Zero later,” Isla replied. And was doubting telling Becca about Troy’s threat earlier.
Anyway, she will just tell everything to Zero.
After a few minutes of waiting, their professor stepped inside and started his lecture. Another dull day if the professor keeps on talking and talking.
Nonetheless, she still jotted down notes, and after an hour, the prof dismissed them.
“Zero will pick you up?” Becca asked as she wore her bag.
Isla nodded. “Yeah. I just texted him. How about you? Apollo will fetch you?”
Becca rolled her eyes at her. “As if. We will just see each other if he wants to fuck—” she didn’t finish her words when Isla covered her mouth.
“You and your curse mouth.”
Becca pulled away from her hand and burst into laughter.
