Chapter 59 - Not Safe

Sarah stood by the window of their small office, watching the city bustle below as the morning sun cast long shadows across the room. She had just finished her live telecast for the morning news, delivering the latest updates with her usual professionalism. Beside her, Kendra sat at her desk, her normally cheerful demeanor replaced by a troubled expression that had been noticeable since early morning.
Turning away from the window, Sarah approached Kendra with a concerned frown. "Hey, Kendra," she began gently, leaning against the edge of Kendra's desk. "You've seemed off all morning. Is everything okay?"
Kendra hesitated, her gaze flickering towards the office door as if checking for eavesdroppers. Satisfied that they were alone, she leaned closer to Sarah, lowering her voice. "I heard something," she admitted in a hushed tone, her brow furrowed with worry. "About Mr. Shane David."
Sarah's brow creased in confusion. "Shane David? What about him?" she asked, her curiosity piqued by Kendra's obvious concern.
Kendra took a deep breath, choosing her words carefully. "It's... it's about his identity," she finally revealed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I heard from a college friend who's connected in some... unconventional circles. They said Shane David is a werewolf."
Sarah's eyes widened in shock, her mind struggling to process the unexpected revelation. Werewolf? The word conjured images of folklore and fantasy, not the sleek, charismatic businessman who graced the covers of business magazines. "A werewolf?" she echoed incredulously, unable to hide her surprise.
Kendra nodded solemnly, her worry deepening. "Yes," she confirmed quietly. "And I can't help but think about Giselle. You know how close they've been lately."
Sarah's concern mirrored Kendra's. Giselle, their mutual friend and Sarah's colleague in the newsroom, had been spending more time with Shane David lately, covering his business ventures and personal achievements. The thought of Giselle unknowingly entangled with a supernatural being sent a chill down Sarah's spine.
"Do you think she knows?" Sarah asked quietly, her voice tinged with apprehension. "About... about him being a werewolf?"
Kendra shook her head slowly, her expression troubled. "I don't think so," she replied, her voice tinged with concern. "And that's what worries me. What if she's in danger, Sarah? What if he's... not what he seems?"
Sarah's mind raced with questions, her journalistic instincts warring with her personal concern for Giselle's safety. "We need to find out more," she decided firmly, her tone resolute. "If there's any truth to this... we owe it to Giselle to protect her."
Kendra nodded in agreement, grateful for Sarah's support. "I've been trying to gather more information discreetly," she admitted, glancing around the office as if expecting eavesdroppers. "But it's not easy. This kind of thing... it's not exactly headline news."
Sarah sighed, understanding the delicate nature of the situation. "We'll have to proceed carefully," she acknowledged, her mind already formulating a plan. "Let's start by digging deeper. Quietly."
Just then, their editor's voice crackled over the intercom, calling Sarah to discuss the afternoon news segment. With a shared nod, Sarah left Kendra to her thoughts, promising to reconvene later to discuss their next steps.
Throughout the day, Sarah couldn't shake the unsettling revelation about Shane David. As she prepared for her next telecast, her mind kept drifting back to Giselle and the potential danger she might be in. It wasn't just about reporting anymore; it was about protecting someone they cared about from a hidden world of supernatural secrets.
After her broadcast, Sarah found Kendra waiting anxiously in their office, her laptop open to a page filled with notes and obscure references. "Any luck?" Sarah asked quietly, closing the door behind her.
Kendra sighed, rubbing her temples wearily. "It's... complicated," she admitted, gesturing towards her screen. "I've found a few whispers in certain online forums and anonymous sources hinting at Shane David's dual nature. But nothing concrete, nothing we can use."
Sarah nodded thoughtfully, perching on the edge of Kendra's desk. "We need more than rumors," she agreed, frustration lacing her tone. "If we're going to confront him or even approach Giselle about this, we need solid evidence."
Kendra glanced at Sarah with a mixture of admiration and concern. "Do you think we should confront him directly?" she asked tentatively, her voice betraying her uncertainty.
Sarah hesitated, weighing their options carefully. "Not yet," she decided finally, her voice steady with resolve. "We need to be sure before we make any accusations. And if Giselle doesn't know, we have to tread lightly."
Kendra nodded in agreement, her expression serious. "Agreed," she affirmed, her determination matching Sarah's. "But we can't just sit back and do nothing, Sarah. Not when Giselle's safety might be at risk."
Sarah met Kendra's gaze with a solemn nod. "We won't," she promised, feeling a surge of determination. "Let's keep digging. We'll find something concrete, something that will either confirm or refute these rumors."
As they poured over the information late into the evening, Sarah couldn't help but feel the weight of responsibility on her shoulders. Journalism had always been about uncovering the truth, but this was different. This was personal. Giselle's trust in Shane David could be her greatest vulnerability, and Sarah was determined to protect her friend, no matter the cost.
As night settled over the city, Sarah and Kendra continued their investigation, navigating through a web of secrets and half-truths in search of answers. The office buzzed with the glow of their laptops and the murmur of their voices, united in their quest to unravel the mystery surrounding Shane David and his hidden identity.
Kendra, ever proactive, broke the silence that hung between them. "Sarah, what if we just call Giselle directly and ask her about Shane David?" she suggested, her voice tinged with urgency.
Sarah nodded thoughtfully, considering Kendra's suggestion. "That's a good idea," she agreed, reaching for her phone on the desk. With practiced ease, she navigated to Giselle's contact and tapped the call button.
The phone rang several times before diverting to voicemail. Sarah frowned, exchanging a concerned glance with Kendra. "Her phone's off," she remarked quietly, a knot of worry tightening in her stomach.
Kendra leaned forward, her expression troubled. "That's unusual," she observed, her mind racing with possibilities. "Giselle's always reachable. What if something's happened?"
