Chapter 20-- Maybe Memories
I beat Dean by a minute to the bedroom. When he arrived he slammed the door shut.
“You’re not going to tell anyone about it are we clear?”
“About the lake?”
“Yes, until I figure out why it’s following you.”
“What about Gabe? I mean he’s an Alpha and your brother.”
“No!” He raked his fingers through his hair. “Especially him. Lyle won’t say anything either.”
“You know when he finds out it’s only going to prove him right about me.”
Dean lowered to my level on the bed. His dark expression pushed me back. He kept coming until my back hit the mattress.
“Dean?”
Dean’s arms caged me in. My heart hammered it made my chest ach.
“Layla, I’m the King. When I command something I expect it to be obeyed.”
“I know I just… I don’t want any trouble.”
“Again I’m the King. No one touches what’s mine.”
I gave a slight nod. What happens when the King discards me like soggy cardboard?
“Good.” He straightened his spine.
There was something in his stare that kept me pinned on the bed.
“Another thing. Lexi came to me crying.” He folded his arms.
“That drama queen!” I shot up. “What reason would she have to cry?”
I stood up. Rage, taking over my body. “Are you defending her? It looks like you’re defending her.”
The amusement on his face wasn’t helping his case.
“I’m not defending her.”
“I didn’t do a thing to her. Why would she run to you? Are you my mate or hers?”
Dean grabbed my waist and wrapped his arms around me. He smiled into my face.
“Little Wolf, I’m all yours. I know you wouldn’t attack her without reason.”
“She said I attacked her?”
“Sort of. She said you threatened her.”
“Well, she came here to pester me. Next time don’t send her to check on me.”
“I didn’t send Lexi. I wouldn’t do anything so stupid.”
“I doubt she’s going to leave me alone then.”
“I’ll take care of her. What I really cared about how is how you know you’re a Beta wolf. Or did you just say that to scare her?”
I wish I knew too. I pushed a strand of hair out of my face and looked around the floor as if I dropped something. I hoped something would come to mind to explain how those words came out of my mouth.
“Uhmm….”
“Layla?”
“Ugh, I don’t know okay? It just came out.”
I wiggled out of his hold and marched to the window. Gabe spoke to Lyle and Dec. There was so much authority in the way he spoke. Men like Gabe were born to be Alpha’s.
“Am I supposed to believe that?” Dean snapped.
Then there was Dean. His body oozed confidence and authority. He could command a fleet of wolves effortlessly. He was like his brother in so many ways, but it was clear the older brother had the advantage.
“I’m not lying.” I turned to him.
He scrutinized me. A part of me believed Dean wasn’t sure about me. Until I knew the truth about my past and how I ended up in Gabe’s pack I wouldn’t be sure about me. The last thing I wanted was for my mate to abandon me especially after I gave myself to him during a storm near a fireplace.
“Do you think you’re remembering your past?”
I shrugged, “I don’t remember anything Dean. I have no idea if I am a Beta or if it just came out because she pissed me off.”
“This could be a good sign Little Wolf. You should have your memories back in no time.” He caressed my cheek.
Hope lived in his eyes. What if I never regained my memories? Would the doubt linger forever? I know questions would stay with me for a long time. Or was I better off not knowing what happened to me?

“Shouldn’t you guys be in school?” I asked Sam and Ash.
Ash smirked as he weighed a metal rod. A part of the castle grounds had been turned into a military base. There were less than twenty wolves playing with sticks, pretending they were swords. I expected them to be full blown wolves trying to claw each other’s eyes out.
“Nah, we’re joining Dean’s army.” Ash replied.
“Oh? Ginger too?” I asked.
“Yeah, she’s around here somewhere.” Ash said.
“Great. How do I join?”
The boys exchanged a worried look. I didn’t want to spend my time doing nothing. Besides, I still felt horrible for being useless when Killian was attacked and when Dean and I were jumped the day I nearly ran.
“I don’t think that’s such a good idea.” Sam said.
“Why not? I mean sure it’s a lot of training, but I can learn to fight.”
Ash chuckled, “It isn’t that Little Wolf. You can’t shift. It would be dangerous if you can’t shift and defend yourself. Besides, your Dean’s Luna. I doubt he would want you fighting.”
I frowned. “What would he want me doing then?”
Sam smirked and it was the first time I saw him look mischievous.
“Making babies and keeping his bed warm.”
“What?!”
“It isn’t all that bad.” Ash laughed.
“I am not a baby making machine.” The boys continued laughing.
No matter what I said it didn’t deter their amusement. Thanks to them I didn’t realize someone walked up behind me.
“Layla.”
I whirled. Killian stood at six foot. Big blue eyes bore into me. He was okay. Aside from more than a few cuts on his skin, but he was standing which was much better than earlier. Killian’s appearance logged the boy’s laughter in their throats and I had to bite my lip to keep from grinning.
“Killian… you look better.”
“Feel better. Ready to train.” He lifted his shoulders and looked around the ground.
“So soon? Shouldn’t you rest?”
“Rest?” He laughed. “The dare pack won’t rest. They’re on the move. That’s why I told everything I knew about them to The King.”
With each word he spoke Killian never took his eyes off me.
“Your eyes Layla…”
I blinked and looked away. Not at me, but at my suspicious eyes. Couldn’t they be brown like everyone else’s?
“Weird I know.” I started walking away. If I wasn’t getting into the army might as well head back to the castle. Maybe I could be a chef and burn the castle down.
Killian appeared in front of me again. He moved closer prompting me to back up.
“Uh…” I looked down trying to hide my eyes.
“I don’t think they’re weird at all. Intriguing. Anyone in your family have purple eyes?”
“I… I… I don’t know about them. It’s a possibility.”
“You really don’t remember anything?” He asked.
“Nothing.” I snapped.
“There’s a solution to that.”
I slowly raised my head to face him. “What?”
He lifted the corner of his lips. “If you want it.”
“Of course I do. I want it.”
