Old Foes
Dean and Gabe hadn’t said a word since the creature thing appeared out of the tar. Things like this shouldn’t happen!
“What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?” She threw her head back and laughed, revealing a set of rotting teeth.
What was she?
“You should be dead, Sinkara,” Dean rasped.
“Yeah, I’m sure you and your brother would like that. Don’t I look good though?”
“You’re disgusting. What do you want?” Gabe barked.
Her enchanting eyes landed on me, “Layla… finally we meet. I understand how strange it can be conversing with a pile of water but I had to make due. You can thank your mate for what I’ve become.”
“You’re the Locus Lake?” I asked.
Her black lips curled up, “I am.”
Jordan quietly crawled away from Sinkara.
“I’d love to stay and chat but you’ve got something I want… Little Wolf.”
I sucked in my lip. Gabe cast a side glance at me but returned it to obvious enemy in the garden.
“I don’t have it,” I said.
“My wolves think otherwise, so do I. I’m never wrong!”
“Your monsters you mean. You and your trash will pay ten thousand times over for the shit you’ve caused!” Gabe’s turned yellow and in an instant his wolf burst from his skin. Sinkara jumped back and growled.
“We’ll meet again. You’ll love to hear my plans.”
Her skin melted into tar. Like a wave the tar rose above our heads. Dean dragged me out of its path.
“Gabe! Don’t touch it.”
The brown wolf leaped to the other side and went through the hedges. The tar rolled on the grass on the path Jordan had taken.
“No, no, get away from me!”
Her cry cut the air. I shuddered and pressed my face on Dean’s shirt.

“Upstairs, now,” Dean ordered.
Gabe marched up the stairs only in a pair of black pants. These two had a lot of explaining to do. Who was that horrible woman? She looked like she’d just crawled out of her grave.
After Gabe walked in Dean locked the door.
I stomped to our bed and flopped on it. “Who was that?”
Gabe and Dean shared a look.
“Don’t do that! I deserve to know. You, Gabe! Accused me every chance you got of ruining your pack.”
“I know Layla—”
“Now you don’t want to tell me how you know that… that woman?!’
“I’m sorry I shouldn’t have accused you. I was going through a lot.”
“Oh don’t give me that! What is she?”
“She’s a demon wolf,” Dean said.
“I’ve never heard of anything like that.” A shiver ran through me.
“She was an ordinary wolf but…” Gabe and Dean shared another look before Gabe continued. “Something happened and she became a hybrid. That didn’t go so well, she had a power hungry master. He used her to create the Dare pack. We killed her but obviously not good enough.”
You’re telling me!
“Did you have suspicions about her when I told you about hearing voices and the lakes?” I turned to Dean.
“I might have but I assumed she was dead.”
“Ugh! Dean. I thought I was losing it.”
He closed the gap between us but I wouldn’t let him touch me. “Why didn’t you just tell me.”
“I didn’t want to tell you about that part of my life.”
Clearly, Gabe’s explanation was missing a few details.
“It wasn’t the right time.”
Gabe rose from the chair by the table, “Now what do we do? We know who their leader is but we don’t know where to find them.”
“I think you’ve got worse things to worry about,” I said.
Gabe frowned, “What’s that?”
“Lexi then Jordan. How many more have been swayed by Sinkara? Cora was killed and so were the others.”
“Yet, you walked right into one and you’re still standing,” Gabe said.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It’s just interesting.”
“Enough, no one hears about this, got it? Take care of security. I’ll be down later.”
Gabe nodded. We stared at each for hard until he left.
“Are you alright, my love?”
“I’m fine. Annoyed.”
“I’m sorry I should have known. Her armies have gotten bigger since the last we faced off.”
“Does she turn ordinary wolves into hybrids?”
“Yeah. We take her out and the process stops.”
“How do we take out a demon wolf?”
He pulled me into his arms and kissed my forehead. “There are ways.”

Since the Jordan incident I couldn’t help but look at shifters critically. Jordan was a simple social worker and Lexi was just the house help. Who else had that monster recruited? There had to be more.
“Can you tell me why all the events have been cancelled for the next few weeks? I was looking forward to the ball,” Ginger sulked.
“Glad, you’re feeling better,” I told her.
“Something happened didn’t it?” Sam asked.
The three of us were outside the gym.
“Uh…”
“You can’t tell us? That’s okay,” Sam said.
He’s bulked up over the weeks. He still maintained his glasses which gave him a cute geeky jock vibe. I heard gossip he was among the best gamma warriors.
“It’s not okay! Tell us, who will we tell?” Ginger leaned closer to me.
“Somethings are better left hidden, trust me,” I said.
“Ugh, don’t give me that. Does Kenzie know?” Ginger asked.
I shrugged. Before I replied I caught Killian storm across the ground.
“Geez, who’d he kill?” Ginger asked.
“Something about that guy’s off,” Sam said.
“You think so?” I asked.
Sam nodded, “He’s taught our classes a few times.”
“What you think?”
“It’s like he’s one person one second and another one the next minute. He’s got a temper too.”
“He’s weird, Sam, that’s it,” Ginger said.
Sam smiled at her before staring at the ground again. Ginger blushed she tried to hide it but I caught it. I hoped they gave into the bond sooner or later.
*“Little Wolf, get changed and meet me in the moon room,” Dean said through our link.
“Why?”
“Come on, just get over here.”
“Where the heck’s the moon room? What is a moon room?!”
“It’s on the third floor. Fifteen minutes.”*
I stood, “I’ve got to go. I’ll see you guys later right?”
“Yes, you better have answers for why the ball’s been cancelled,” Ginger said.
I shook my head playfully and trekked to the castle. What did I wear? What was this for? I raked my fingers through the clothes in the hunger. None of them spoke to me. In the end I went with black because it wouldn’t contrast with my purple eyes. The issue with having eyes like mine was paring my outfits according to their shade.
“*Dean? Should I wear heels?” I asked through our link.
“You want to climb twenty-five stairs in heels?” He responded.
“I want to look sexy!” I rolled my eyes.
“Your sexy even in bunny slippers. Your fifteen minutes are up.”
“What’s going on?” I asked but after a couple of seconds he didn’t respond.
“Dean?”*
No answer.
I groaned and slipped into black crossed block heel sandals. The heel was three inches long. I stepped into the mirror and twirled. I didn’t remember the last time I got dressed up. I sucked in a deep breath and let it go. I made my way to the third floor. It was quiet, almost abandoned. Though the carpet was clean and the paints were fresh. All the doors in the hall were identical and closed. Which one was the moon room?
I reached the end of the hall and my question was answered. The door had the words moon on it. I twisted the knob and pushed the door in.
“Dean?”
