Hybrids come

“Let’s go through the woods,” Dean said.
“You want to run?”
“Yeah,” he slammed the car door and walked into the street. “Let’s blow off some steam.”
He ripped off his shirt, revealing bronze back muscles. He turned around to see if I would accept the challenge.
“I’m much faster than you,” I said.
“Let’s see Little Wolf.”
“All right.”
My mate trailed behind me. Our paws hit the tar road leading to the forest. Dean barked and I howled at the half-moon. I couldn’t help it. Soon the moonlight was obscured by the trees above us. Dean was catching up.
I darted between trees, kicked up dirt and jumped over rocks. I howled just to mock him. Slowpoke. We raced up the mountain toward the castle. He barked in relation but he wouldn’t catch me that’s what I thought until he went silent.
It was a trick I kept on running the castle was a few minutes away. I heard Dean’s growl and seconds after our bodies tangled and rolled down the slope. Dean tackled me from the side. What a cheat. Wolf legs turned into human legs. Dean spooned me as we rolled through mud and grim until our bodies came to a halt against a tree.
Dean laughed. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. You can’t take losing can you?”
He hovered above me and smirked. “I wasn’t losing.”
“You were trailing.”
“Trailing baby, there’s a difference. The castle’s miles away.”
“I’ll give it to you since you’re an old man,” I teased.
“You gotta let the kids win some time.”
I puffed and tried to get up but Dean pinned me to the ground. We were covered in the murk, dead leaves and bugs. I shuddered. Bugs made my skin crawl. Dean then lay on his back and tucked me under his arm. He panted heavily and I realized that we really did go far.
“Feel better?” I asked.
“I feel like shit.”
“Why were your Father’s remains under the castle? It’s pretty creepy.”
“It’s the only place they were safe. Where I knew they were.”
“Did Killian know?”
“No, just Gabe and me. Obviously, he overheard. Fuck that rat.”
I raised my thigh to Dean’s waist. He responded by caressing my thigh.
“They won’t wake him. I’ll make sure of it.”
“What else did he do aside from the hybrids?” I asked.
“Hybrids are a threat to the packs. He used his small armies to take out small packs. All his attacks were successful. It scared a lot of the Alphas. He tried to turn me too, but it didn’t work.”
I sat up to stare at him. He held my stare but didn’t continue.
“What do you mean it didn’t work?”
“Because Gabe found me and held him in place while I snapped his neck. The vampire blood in me wore off. Or at least I believe it did.”
I swallowed. “Vampire?”
“He said it would make me invincible. Give me the powers of a thousand wolves and shit like that.” He hauled his top half up and hugged his knees. “It would make me immortal. I’m ashamed to say I was tempted.”
“To live forever?”
Dean shook his head. “I wanted the power but I don’t need that much.”
I got on my knees, touched Dean’s arm and smoothed the skin.
“We’ll find a way around this. They may have your Dad but we have a secret weapon.”
Dean leaned in and closed his lips on mine. “Let’s get out of here.”
Dean took one step and sparked the sound of hinges and metal clapping. Dean yelled. He shut his eyes as the veins in his neck popped out. Blood splattered from his right leg and landed on my legs.
“Dean!”
“Bear trap.”
Vicious metal claws sunk into his foot.
“You have to pry it open, Layla,” he groaned, agony written on his face.
“Are you sure?”
A puddle of blood formed around his feet. He held a tree for support.
“Yes, damn it.”
“Goddess,” I whispered. The metal claws were deep.
“Look what we caught,” a familiar husky voice said from the dark forest.
I got up instantly and searched for the source of the voice. Soon, a large brown wolf with spiky fur appeared. I sucked in a breath. He was the same wolf who appeared at the bus station at Gabe’s pack. He didn’t have two others with him this time he came with five additional wolves. I stared at Dean, caught by a simple bear trap.
“We thought you were the map, Layla turns out you’re the treasure,” the brown wolf said.
I wouldn’t get used to wolves talking in their wolf form.
“Get back! Stay away from her,” Dean ordered.
Sweat formed on his forehead. The pain was killing him.
“You’re not in the position to make demands your highness. Nice sob story by the way. To think you would have been our leader. It’s not too late. Sinkara would love to have you as her solider.”
“Go to hell,” Dean spat.
“Don’t say I didn’t offer. Come the easy way and your mate dies a good death.”
“Leave him alone or I won’t come.”
The brown wolf laughed and the other wolves followed.
“The Alpha King and his mate don’t understand that we call the shots,” he growled and snapped his jaw.
I summoned my wolf and she rose to the edge of my skin.
“I’m the one with the power. I make the rules.”
My white wolf burst through my skin. The hybrids jumped back but recovered quickly to snap their jaws at me. I threw my head back and howled the distress call. It was six against one but they would not touch my mate. I blocked the first blow and kicked a wolf several feet away not before long my distress call was answered. Help was on the way.
