The Alpha's Concubines
Nailah let the water pour on her and stepped out of the bathroom when she was done with the sleek cloth wrapped around her.
Her head was banging heavily as she grabbed something big from her wardrobe - big enough to keep her warm.
Staring at her image in the mirror with the aid of the litted candles on the table, she reflected on how pathetic she had been in the last hours - from her brother's death to the Alpha getting angry at her.
"You look like one of those dogs in the streets", she could still hear his hurtful words. They were as loud as tho, he was in the room with her.
She fisted her hand and thumped the table. Never again wouldn't she let herself be so humiliated. She's been trying so hard to get the Alpha on her side yet, made him disgusted at her. As for the Princess, the reason for everything... she would stop at nothing to get her revenge on her. No matter how much it'd cost, she was determined to make her suffer and regret releasing the arrow on her brother.
She reached for her comb and brushed her wet hair with it. Done, she gave herself one hard look in the mirror and muttered: "No more weaknesses. You're too strong to be conquered".
And with that, she stepped out of the room. All she wanted was to have a walk round the quiet parts of the clan as the air at night was usually cold and different. But her perfect plan was disrupted by the presence of the last person she'd want to see.
She slackened her steps as she stared at her, irked by how powerful she carried herself. There was always something about her that made Nailah mad - like how soft and gentle she looked, yet she was as venomous as a snake. And how she always wanted to make herself superior to everyone. Why? Because she was the Alpha's first concubine? She must be joking.
As they got close, Nailah lowered her gaze and wished for the first time, they'd just pass by each other without bickering. But that doesn't happen.
"How are you doing, Nailah?" The fair - beauty lady asked, making Nailah stop just when she had passed her a bit.
When Nailah looked at her, she was hassled by the warm smile on her face. Only a stranger would mistake Dini's smile for genuineness.
"Or should I say... how are you holding up with the grief?" She added, her voice sounding so cherry and deceiving.
It was something Nailah hated as well - how well she could put up an act and make everyone think she was the perfect one. And also her beauty... Nailah couldn't deny the Alpha's first concubine was effortlessly prettier than her. Her oval-shaped face was the prettiest, her eyes, her lips and the way she walked. Her steps alone made her outstanding as she walked just like a Queen - gentle and elegant with her shoulders high. That was the reason Nailah was having a hard time getting the Alpha's attention on her side - Dini was always his favourite, even if he frequently hurt her - which was his normal way of life.
"I am doing just fine, Dini. Thanks for the concern", she answered hastily and tried walking away.
"You are welcome, my beloved. But I must admit, it was unnecessary to act the way you did earlier today - trying to attack the Princess", Dini's words halted her again.
"I understand you're grieving, but you need to .."
"I do not need you to caution me, Dini. I can surely take care of my decisions", Nailah snapped.
"Please, please, Nailah", Dini called softly as she moved closer to her. "You do not have to get angry. I'm only trying to give you some help. I do not know why you have this unending hatred for me".
It vexed Nailah the more. How could she sound so sweet when she was worst than the black angels? Poisonous than a snake's venom? Anyone passing by would think she was the hateful one, while Dini was the nice one. How can she be so deceptive?
"I really want us to be friends again, Nailah", she continued, her voice sounding too sweet and complimenting her soft smile. "I like you a lot. And that's the reason I want to say this to you",
she paused and moved closer, placing a hand on Nailah's shoulder.
"The gamma was a good man and didn't deserve what happened to him", she stated more calmly. "And I feel so terrible for what happened to him. But to be honest, I am glad your brother is dead".
Nailah's eyes drooped instantly. Her heart wrenched in her chest as she watched the smile on Dini's face turn into a smirk - an unsubdued grin.
"You witch!" She rasped as she pushed Dini away and watched her laugh hysterically. The laugh was so intimidating, it ate Nailah up.
"What were you expecting, my dear opponent?" She hectored, her eyes still cracking hints of laughter.
"The grief suits you. And I wish you get to lose loved ones everyday just so you could go through it for the rest of your life", she attempted to walk away, but turned back the next second.
"Oh! I almost forgot", she said with her index finger up. "You have no one else to lose because you're all alone now. How pathetic".
Nailah was already feeling the cold blow running down her veins. The pain was something heavier than her.
"I will kill you, Dini. I will you kill you myself", she fisted her hands and gritted.
"The best you can get of me is a strand of my lovely hair, darling", Dini chuckled and finally walked away, her long gown sweeping the floor behind her.
Now, that was what Nailah was talking about. That was the hidden venom she carried behind her smiles.
