Chapter 107

Alyssa

I watched as Logan stormed out the door, taking my dreams with him, as tears streamed down my cheeks. For some reason, I couldn't look away, even after he was long gone.
Alanna placed her hand on my arm as she led me back into my office. "Alyssa, are you all right?"
I didn't answer. Alanna nodded to Mrs. Farrow, and she walked out and closed the door behind her.
"I'm going to go chase him down and give him an ear full!" she said, looking out the door. "How dare he talk to you like that!"
I stopped her as she started to walk away. "No. Let him go," I said, looking up at her with a blank look in my eyes. "He's right."
"He was right?" she asked, her voice raising several octaves. "Alyssa, what the fuck are you talking about?"
I nodded. "Think about it, Alanna. He thought I was dead, just like I thought he was. I have the feeling that if he would have known that I was alive, he would have moved heaven and earth to find me just as he just did."
"But he didn't," she said. "I'll be right back."
"Alanna, don't you dare!" I said, holding her arm. "Let him go!"
She jerked her arm away. "He's damn lucky I didn't call the police on him. Mrs. Farrow picked up the phone to call, but I stopped her."
"Good."
"Alyssa, I don't believe you!" Alanna said as she placed her hands on her hips. "I don't care what happened between you two! He should have never come in here raising holy hell like that!"
I started to regain my senses, and then sudden rage filled my body. "Alanna, I'm leaving for the day." I got up and quickly grabbed my purse and my car keys, along with my briefcase.
"Oh, no you don't!" she said. "You're not leaving in this state of mind! Alyssa, I'll tell you what. I'll cancel my appointments and we'll go downstairs for a drink and talk about this."
I shook my head as I tucked my purse under my arm. "No. I have to go."
"Where are you going?" she asked, blocking my way.
"To see Craig. He knew that Logan was alive and he didn't tell me!" I said in disbelief.
"Holy shit!" she said. "Alyssa, don't do anything you'll regret!"
"I'm not going to kill him, although he'll wish I had killed him when I'm through with him!" I stormed out. Mrs. Farrow stood but said nothing as I stormed past her out the door.
I rushed down the hallway to the elevator and punched the button. A few minutes later, it opened and I hurried in. Another lawyer that I knew caught the doors before they closed. His office was down the hallway from mine. He must have sensed my mood because he just nodded as he stepped in, then hit the button, and faced the door, never saying a word. A moment later, the doors opened and I rushed past him, out the door to my car, and threw my purse onto the side seat. I started the car and it roared to life. I stomped on the gas and listened as the wheels spun before they caught traction, kicking up pebbles in their wake.
The tires squealed as I pulled out into traffic, cutting the wheel hard to the right. I laid on the accelerator, not caring about the police or if I got a ticket-I was way beyond caring. I sped through the city streets, discovering that my car cornered like a dream, until I finally stopped in front of Craig's office.
Leaving my purse in the car, I took the keys and locked it up, slamming the door behind me. I stormed into the building and walked purposefully down the hallway toward Craig's office.
I walked in, and Olivia stood behind her desk. "Good morning, Ms. Collins! Do you have an appointment?"
Ignoring her, I walked past her and flung open the door to Craig's office and he was sitting behind his desk. "What the hell is going on?" I demanded.
Craig calmly stood and walked to the door. "Cancel my next appointment," he said to Olivia, and then added, "I don't want to be disturbed."
"Yes, sir," she said, and then discreetly walked out, looking back and forth between Craig and me.
Craig shut the door behind her. "Alyssa, please sit down."
I stepped up to him instead, just inches away from his face, my eyes flaring. "Why didn't you tell me that Logan was alive all this time?" I stared into his eyes, and his pupils dilated and then contracted.
"What're you talking about?" Craig asked. "Logan came to see me Friday, but I was just as surprised to see him as you were."
"Liar!" I yelled, as I looked from one eye to the other, searching for the truth.
He turned away and walked around his desk. Then, he turned to me and smirked. "I'm not lying, Alyssa. As soon as I saw him, I told him where your office was right away."
I took a closer look at him, and there were blue circles under both of his eyes. "Where did the black eyes come from, Craig?" I asked as I crossed my arms over my chest.
He self-consciously reached up and felt his eye, and then looked at me and smiled. "I fell."
I smirked. "And here I didn't think you were clumsy," I said, my voice calm. "You see, Logan came to see me today. And he told me that you knew he was alive." I planted my hands on his desk and leaned across it. "What the fuck is going on?"
Craig's eyes flared. "Don't curse like that. It's not becoming a lady."
"Don't you dare tell me what to fuckin' say!" I said. "Now, what happened? Did you know?"
He looked at me for a long time, and then finally let out a deep breath as he nodded. "Yes. I knew."
I scrubbed my hands across my face, and then turned away, gripping my fists against my face and pulled them down abruptly. "Why the fuck didn't you tell me? Craig, you ruined my life!"
"I saved your life!" Craig yelled, slapping his hands onto the desk as he stood.
"How could you say that?" I asked, walking around his desk. "I loved him!"
"Past tense, 'loved'," Craig said as he took a step toward me and stared down at me with want in his eyes. "You deserved more than he could give you! He was holding you back!"
Without thinking, I reared back and slapped him hard across the face. "How dare you say that to me? You had no right! He was everything to me! Don't you see that? And now it's too late!"
"Alyssa." He placed his hands on my shoulders, unfazed. "You're better than that. He was holding you back. Look at what you've done with your life. Although, I never expected that you would give up music."
"Go to hell, and stay away from me!" I yelled into his face. Then I swung the door open so hard that it hit the wall, and marched out, not paying attention to Olivia hot on my heels.
