Chapter 33
"Good morning," Logan whispered in my ear.
I opened my eyes and looked at the clock. It was ten o'clock in the morning. I smiled and rolled over to look into Logan's beautiful eyes as my body tingled. "Good morning," I said as I pressed my lips to his.
He opened his lips, and I responded as my tongue swirled around his. A moment later, he pulled back to look into my eyes. "How are you this morning?"
"Good. How do you feel?" I asked, smiling as I smoothed a lock of his dark blond hair away from his eyes.
"Great," he said. "I'm going to go jump in the shower. We have to be at the studio at twelve noon." Then, he reached down and gave me one last sweet kiss. "Are you okay?"
I smiled, knowing that he was concerned because of everything we did earlier that morning, and that it was my first time. I kissed him lightly. "More than okay."
"Okay." He got up out of bed and slid into his jeans. "I'll be back in a bit."
I curled up in the comforter and pulled it up around my face to inhale his sweet scent that lingered.
He stopped at the door and turned around. "I would ask you to join me, but we have to go soon."
I laughed. "Now, don't get that started again!"
He laughed as he gave me a wink and disappeared out the door.
I was going to wait until they left to leave, but decided that I'd better get a start on the day, too. I needed to get a cell phone, groceries, and a bank account, to start. So, I got up from the bed and dressed in the clothes I wore the night before, and then headed down the hallway to the kitchen.
"Good morning," Lathe said, pouring himself a cup of coffee, and then held up the coffee pot. "Want some?" He acted as if there was nothing out of the ordinary with me being there first thing in the morning.
I nodded, smiling. "Sure, but I can get it."
He shook his head as he pulled another cup from the cabinet and poured me one. "Cream and sugar?"
I smiled. "Here. I'll doctor it." He handed me the coffee cup. "Thanks. Do you have any artificial sweetener?"
He shrugged. "Just sugar, but tell me what you like and I'll get you some at the store today."
I smiled at the gesture. "Thanks, but you don't have to do that."
"Sure I do!" he joked. "Besides, we owe you a lot more than that."
I smirked. "You don't owe me anything."
"Thanks, again for getting us the gig for everything."
I shrugged. "Don't mention it."
He set the sugar bowl down onto the breakfast bar in front of me. "Will this be okay for now?"
I nodded. "Great. Thanks."
Mason walked into the room and poured himself a cup of coffee. Then, he looked up at me. "Can you tell your boyfriend to put on some clothes when he walks around the house in the middle of the night?"
Lathe almost spit out his coffee as he laughed, but pretended not to have heard anything. "I'll be right back."
I bit my lower lip, suppressing a smile. "I'll get him one of those fuzzy robes."
Mason cracked a smile. "See that you do," he teased, and then clicked his coffee cup with mine.
"Morning, Allie," Kyle said as he walked into the room. "Where's Logan?"
"Hogging the bathroom, as usual," Mason said before I could answer.
I smiled. "I take it you're not a morning person."
Kyle laughed. "No. He's definitely not."
Mason growled, and then walked out, mumbling, "Only when some shithead shows me his junk in the middle of the night."
I laughed so hard that coffee almost came out my nose. "Kyle, can I ask you a question?" I asked, my voice low as I looked over my shoulder to make sure that Logan wasn't behind me.
He nodded. "But you have to hurry. We have to be at the studio soon."
I shrugged. "It can wait."
He shook his head as he poured himself a cup of coffee. "No. What's up?" Then, he leaned across the counter from the other side, holding the cup with both hands as he waited.
"Logan's other girlfriend "
"Other girlfriend?" he asked, confused.
"You know, the one he had in college."
"Oh." Suddenly, his face turned sour and his voice flat. "Megan. What about her?"
"Why did she leave?" I took a deep breath, not quite sure how to explain it. "Logan said that he came home one day and she was gone-no note, no warning."
He nodded, thinking. Then, he looked toward the door to make sure that Logan wasn't within earshot. "He never said, and I don't think he knows himself, but I imagine that his parents paid her off."
My eyes flew open wide. "They what?"
He nodded as he took a deep breath. "Allie, his parents are super wealthy. Logan was so in love with Megan, but she was from a middle-class family. She wasn't poor, but not in their league. But Logan didn't care about that. When he cares about someone, he just looks at who they are; money doesn't mean anything to him.
"Anyway, he took her home to meet Mommy and Daddy and they hit the roof, stating that she wasn't good enough for him and that they were going to cut him off." He stopped to take a breath. "But Logan didn't care about that. He told them to shove their money up their asses, and that he was going to marry her. He was in love with her.
"Shortly after that, he came home one day and she was gone. No note, no goodbye, no nothing, the stupid bitch." He shook his head at the memory. "The least she could have done was to say goodbye to him." He paused to take a breath. "Anyway, I don't know for sure, but the only thing I can think of is that they got to her, offered her money to disappear, and she took it."
I shook my head, unable to believe what I was hearing. "Why would she do something like that to Logan?"
"Allie, you have to understand," he continued. "They are a very powerful, influential family. He wants nothing to do with it, but they keep drawing him back in."
"Mafia?" I asked conspiratorially.
He shook his head. "Worse. Old Money. Politics."
I nodded, understanding.
"They want him to be president one day, or some shit." Kyle took a sip of his coffee, letting it all sink in.
"President? Like, of the United States?" I asked, unable to believe what I was hearing. "So, he is like the Kennedys or something?"
He shook his head. "No, not the Kennedys, but close. They're social climbers." Then he straightened up. "Well, Logan'll be in here in a minute, but keep all this between us." He looked into my eyes conspiratorially. "Allie, I like you, and I'm only going to say this just once. Don't hurt him. He's been through enough."
I nodded. "I have no intention to."
He smiled. "Good. Now, I have to go change." We both looked up at the clock at the same time. It was already quarter till eleven. "Man, we have to go." Then, he placed his hands over mine, forcing me to look into his eyes. "Remember what I said; don't hurt him."
I nodded as my eyes met his, unwavering. "I think the one who'll end up getting hurt is me."
He smiled as he patted my hand. "No; he won't hurt you, Alyssa." Then, he turned and poured himself another cup of coffee. "Now, I have to get ready."
I nodded. "Thanks, Kyle."
He stopped in the doorway and turned around and smiled. "No problem. Just take care of my boy." Then, he gave me a wink and disappeared into the hallway.
I got up and walked around the breakfast bar, thinking about everything that Kyle had said. I pulled another coffee cup from the cabinet and poured Logan a cup, too, knowing that he'd be in here soon. I couldn't imagine a girl ever doing that to him. But what if it was worse? What if they had her killed? I quickly pushed the thought aside, shaking my head to free it from the image. Kyle said that they weren't Mafia. But from what I heard about Old Money and protecting their sons, I didn't know which was worse.
I sat back down and took another sip of my coffee. I couldn't imagine letting someone pay me off to stay away from the man that I loved. No matter how much I needed money, there was no way that anyone could pay me to do that-literally. After all, money wasn't everything.
