Chapter 46 - The Future of Our Country
There was a flash of fear in Landon's eyes and Raymond smiled. That was what he wanted. For Landon to realize the position he was in. He was going to be killed for his crimes.
"The only reason you are still alive and were not killed immediately is because of your lineage. But seeing as that sort of crime is unforgivable and that you also attempted to kill me as well, it's been decided that you are too dangerous to be kept alive and so. It probably would have come around eventually, so, you are going to be sentenced to death for your crimes."
Landon immediately fired back. "If you try to kill me then mother will never forgive you for it."
"I have already spoken to mother. She knows what must happen. You are not invincible to the rules, Landon."
His brother needed to be punished to the full extent of the law. The option to banish him from Creona did come up but then he could be a threat to other people and knowing Landon, he would just try to sneak back in and cause problems again. Raymond was unaffected by these events as he did not share any affection with his brother. They did not grow up together and were more or less strangers. The only thing tying them together was their parents.
"You will not know peace even if you kill me."
"Yes, but I will have a lot more knowing that my greedy poisoned brother is dead." The King finished off coldly before he left Landon there in his cell.
Before he came to visit him, he had the castle release the news that Landon was going to be killed. Raymond needed that thorn out of his side as quickly as possible and so he scheduled it for the next day. Truth be told, his mother was not on board with the plan and had pleaded with Raymond to not go through with it but no matter who's child he was, he needed to be punished for what he did. The right way.
Lilith was not prepared for the execution. It was a public execution and although she did not want to be there, she was Raymond's servant, so she was expected to be there. She had forgotten how things were in times like these. Other countries had done away with executions like these a while ago but Creona kept them to make an example of people and to make sure that no one was foolish enough to follow anyone's lead.
According to Raymond, Landon would be killed with the guillotine just to make sure that he died. There have been times when people have survived hangings, and they needed to make sure that Landon would be gone for good. Not sure how you can miraculously survive without your head.
Although Lilith did not want to be there, she was Raymond's servant and so she was supposed to be there. Landon deserved every bit of punishment that he is getting and Lilith was majorly relieved that it was happening. It is what should have happened the first time. She just isn't very keen on seeing someone getting their head chopped off.
On the day of the execution, people from all over the country came to watch. Apparently, someone thought it was a good idea to hold it right in front of the castle as some sort of symbolic gesture. Lilith didn't really connect the dots but she was glad that she would be able to escape to the castle as soon as it was over.
The crowd was so large that Lilith knew that if the stage was not elevated, more than half the gathering would not be able to see the execution. The only noticeable person that was missing was Nora, but that was obvious. She was probably in the castle waiting to hear the news. How could a mother bear to watch her child be killed? Lilith guessed that not even Nora was powerful enough to stop something like this.
The sun was high in the sky, providing the perfect lighting for today's events. Not a cloud in the sky for fear that the sun gets covered and something be missed. The heavens must also be watching down on everything, having a perfectly clear view. She also hoped that the people in heaven knew that she was the reason all of this was happening. Lilith glanced up at the sky.
At that moment, the crowd became ten times louder. Landon was brought out. Every single curse word in the book was thrown at him. Shouts and screams telling him that they were glad he was going to die and that he will burn in hell for what he did. The anger of the people was justified. They dodged a bullet they never knew existed.
If things stayed the same and Landon got the throne, several things would have happened. Landon would raise the taxes higher than the sky and suck the citizens’ money dry. The only people benefitting from that would be him, the people he coerced into getting his laws passed, and the several dozen concubines that he would acquire over the years.
Landon would never get married. There would be no Queen, and so he ended up having a bunch of children with all the women he slept with and that resulted in a nasty fight for the throne. The worst recorded in history. And Landon did nothing to stop it.
Anything that could have been done to stop someone else from getting the throne was what his children resorted to. The countless murders that took place never had any repercussions, and so in the end there were bad people who were in charge of the country. The monarchy become completely hated and there was an uprising among the people to try and stop them but it failed miserably and ended in a lot of death.
And where were the other Princes in all of this? They were dead. Killed by Landon to make sure that they would never try to take the throne.
That was why Avarice Manor was abandoned and never touched. Until far in the future when the bright idea came about to revive the balls and honor the lost Prince.
Lilith was in high school when she learned about all of this and she had wished that she could go back in time and prevent it. So she kind of did get her wish after all. Of course, Lilith probably was not the first person to wish that, so what made her so special?
She was the reason history changed, she saved all of these people from misery. By complete accident too. She had saved all these people and they would never know it. This was the reason she was sent back in time. Lilith did not expect to become emotional but she teared up and smiled.
Even if Landon gets his men to try and kill Raymond after he is gone... Landon would have never gotten to sit on the throne. And that is the most important thing. How will the future be changed? If Creona now has a chance to continue on strongly, then the future is looking far brighter than how it looked before. Creona may as well be the powerhouse of the world.
How would Avarice Manor look two hundred years into the future? Will balls still be held there? Would it be occupied with royalty? The thought made Lilith shiver with excitement. The future was looking very bright and Lilith was a part of the times that determined that.
All of her thoughts suddenly became too much for her and she had to step away from everything to gather herself. As a history student, this was all a bit much for her. Lilith pushed herself away from the crowd. It was hard since it was so densely packed, but she placed herself somewhere near the back, in the alley next to a house. There was no one else there since the platform was blocked by heads, so Lilith had found the perfect spot to reside.
And then suddenly it all went quiet. Landon was kneeling with his head in the guillotine and Raymond stood next to him. He spoke.
"Any last words?"
