Personal assistant

Sitting across the table from Damien Jaeger this morning felt more intense than it normally did, reason because Damien Jaeger was no longer my estranged husband but my boss starting today.

"You look lovely today, Mélie." Natalie complimented, "Loving the professional look. I smiled and told her "thanks". I was dressed in a pair of black palazo pants, a white half-top and black blazer atop it. My hair was curled at the tips as usual and I wore black stilettos, less pencil than yesterday.

I heard a long mocking hiss and ignored it, "I'm actually starting work today."

"Wow, Congratulations, Mélie!" Natalie beamed. She looked as if she would have given me a tight hug if it weren't for the table, "Where are you working at?"

I hesitated for a while, "Paradox."

She went quiet for a while as if trying to swallow up what I had just said. Ella looked at Damien Jaeger and then at me. Stacy couldn't care what the fuss was about.

"That's...wonderful." She finally said. It was obvious that both Natalie and Ella knew that Damien Jaeger owned Paradox.

Damien Jaeger got up from his seat and dashed out if the living room. There was still a sandwich in my mouth when I was informed that Damien Jaeger was waiting for me in his car.

"Oh!" I exclaimed and rose to my feet clumsily. "I thought I'd go in a different car than him."

I quickly grabbed my handbag that was sitting on a stool by the corner of the wall which was holding up a vase with artificial flowers, and kissed Darcy goodbye before dashing out of the dining room. I could feel the stares from Ella, Stacy and Natalie as they dug into my back in awe.

The driver was already holding out the door for me and I entered the car in the same clumsy manner I had run up to it. After slamming shut the door, the driver returned to the front seat and we drove out of the compound.

I whistled inwardly and fiddled with my hands a little, stealing glances at Damien Jaeger. I must confess that our choice of outfit didn't look entirely coincidental. He was dressed in his black pants, black pants, along with a thick black blazer as he was always dressed in with his hair styled neatly with not one strand out of place. Staring at his phone, he didn't look quite evil and I briefly admired his features. Then his eyes suddenly met mine and I quickly looked away, my cheek stained with crimson- He had caught me staring!

We drove into the familiar parking lot and the driver occupied a space at the far end of the parking lot where there were hardly any other cars.

Damien Jaeger dropped from the car and thundered towards the company building, leaving me behind in the car. For a while, my butt remained glued to the seat as I wondered what I was supposed to do. Then I quickly regained my composure and grabbed my handbag and Damien Jaeger's laptop bag before dropping down from the car. The driver who had shown no sign of impatience finally closed the door.

I walked into Paradox and my eyes landed on the rude receptionist from yesterday. She saw me and her eyes lit up in delight, "miss Shapman. Good morning to you."

"Good morning...uhm...I'm sorry, I totally forgot your name." I said, a bit embarrassed that she had remembered my name and I didn't remember hers.

"Oh, I never gave it, miss Shapman. You didn't either. We were informed that you are sir's new PA."

I smiled, "Yes. So can I get your name then?"

"It's Rachael." She said and stretched her hand out for a handshake which I gratefully received, "And good luck in there."

"You'll need it!" She added in a low tone.

I nodded and quickly headed to the elevator.
~

I have been standing by Damien Jaeger's office for the last 20 minutes, knocking on his door to be let in, yet no answer. Finally having had enough, I twisted the door handle. It was locked.

"What are you doing there?" Someone asked behind me.

"Mrs Jones!" I beamed as soon as I saw her. She was wearing her large glasses and her large grin.

"Shouldn't you be in the boss's office, Mélie?"

"It's locked." I said and twisted the doorknob in front of me as proof.

Mrs Jones laughed, "That's not the boss's office, silly. It's on the top floor."

I exclaimed, "I thought it was…" My voice thrilled off with embarrassment

"How long have you been standing here?" Mrs Jones asked

"20 minutes." I replied.

She made a 'click' sound with her tongue, "That doesn't sound so good. You should hurry to his office and find out if you're still working here."

I understood her message and quickly dashed to the elevator.

Damien Jaeger couldn't possibly fire me though. Not when this was part of his plan to teach me a lesson. I thought carefully.
~

"What?!" I yelled in disbelief.

"I don't like repeating myself, Mélie Shapman."

"You can't fire me." I said, helplessly.

"And why can't I fire you?"

My eyes darted from Damien Jaeger to the floor. Then I gave the only reasonable excuse I could give, "Because I just started working here and…"

"And what, Mélie?" He asked. His face had turned from disinterested to mischievous in a flash. It was a mocking type of mischief which made me ponder on my words.

"Say it, Mélie." He urged.

"And I'm your wife."

He chuckled and got up from his seat and walked up to me with slowly, steady steps, "Well in that case 'wife', you'll have to prove yourself worthy."

"You could leave now on your own or disgracefully leave later. Your choice." He added.

I remembered Martha's words again. I wasn't ready to quit, "I won't be leaving now, Damien Jaeger, and neither will I be leaving later."

He chuckled again, "If you say so, Mélie Shapman." His words were plain but threatening. I prayed silently for strength.
