Arrival of a sworn enemy
IVAN
~•~
Antonio informed me of Camilla's arrival as I stepped into the house. I stood at the edge of the glass door and picked my face towel from my right shoulder.
"How does your leg feel today, sir?" He asked, his tone laced with concern. I did not smile, I barely ever did.
To be honest, the sole of my feet were sore. The injury was from one of my numerous "tantrums". I had gotten into my depressing mood and shattered pictures of my wife and child on the floor. I stepped on the pieces of broken glass and the skin beneath feet tore open. It was impossible for me to walk without having them bleed out. So, I had been strapped to a wheelchair for over a week.
I was tired of that. The injury had began to heal, but the pain still remained as I walked. When Antonio saw that I did not answer his question, he continued, while we walked up the stairs.
"The board called today, sir. They need you to make an appearance in the next meeting, by next week Monday."
I paused on my tracks. I turned my neck to face him, but he stared down at the floor.
"The board scheduled a meeting? What for?"
"They would not say, sir. They only said I should inform you." He replied.
I nodded and looked away from him. I headed straight towards my room, where I remained for the rest of the day. I did not ask to see her or speak to her, not even when I knew her door was just opposite mine. I did not know why, but I requested that she be close to me.
Antonio's message suceeded in throwing me into the dark. I placed calls across to the members of my board, but none of them would tell me what this meeting was about. They only said the exact words Antonio relayed to me; "you have to be there."
I did not want to think about. Nothing good ever resulted from thinking too much. I drowned myself in my books recommended by my previous therapists. I was currebly on one called "A man and his mind." When I put that down, I went through my accounts, making sure that everything was balanced. I signed papers, sent mails to the necessary recipients and admired my credit score again.
I had lunch and dinner in my room, there was no reason to come out. I decided I would only make my appearance to Camilla tomorrow morning, after I…
The pounding at my door caused me to look up from the screen of my laptop. The light in my aquarium had turned itself on, it was the only thing illuminating my room, beside the light from my monitor.
"Come in!" I called out.
The door opened and the visitor flipped the light switch by the door.
I found Antonio, still dressed in his butler uniform, even though it was already 8pm.
I frowned at him.
"I've had dinner and my medication for the night. Are you here to make sure that I'm asleep?" I asked him. However, I noticed he seemed shaken. For one, his hands shook violently, and he could not keep his eyes on me.
I found that strange. Something was wrong. He stared down at me and opened his mouth to speak, but his speech seemed to fail him.
I rose up from my chair immediately. Had something happened?! To my house? At work? To Camilla?
"Antonio, what is it?" I could not help the way I counted my words, laying emphasis on each one of them, so that he heard me.
"Sir, he…" His speech trailed off, and I narrowed my eyes as I approached him slowly.
I could not say I was scared, but my curiosity had skyrocketed to the clouds. It caused my heart to pound against my chest.
"Antonio, look at me."
His eyes rose up to meet mine.
"Do I…do I need to get my gun?"
"A gun for your brother? Now that is what I call an epic welcome present!"
I stopped on my tracks immediately. I prayed, hoped, wished, that the voice was from Antonio. I hoped he was trying to prank me by mimicking the voice and accent of the one man I spent most of my life avoiding.
As I stood still, watching my door, he emerged from the shadows. He leaned against my wall, just behind Antonio, slid his hands into the pocket of his grey suit pants and flashed me a wry smile.
"Hello brother."
There he was. Ian Holloway, the second son of Dimitri and Celine Holloway, my younger brother and only sibling, my rival and self sworn enemy.
Antonio cowered away immediately. I could not blame him. The man was too old for the thick tension between my brother and I.
His smile was recieved with a deep frown.
"You have no right to be here, Ian."
"In my brother's house?"
I matched towards him, and stood my ground in front of him, staring deep into his eyes.
"Why are you here? And you had better go straight to the point because I know that you never show your face without a selfish reason of yours. Whatever you are here for, you wouldn't get it. I suggest you leave, immediately."
Believe me when I say I was trying to be as calm as I could. But everytime he flashed me that annoying smile of his, I wanted to pin him to the wall and break his jaws so he would never be able to smile or speak again.
He arched an amused brow at me. I stood above him with merely five inches, but that did not stop him from looking up at me.
"Leave? The party has just begun brother. Brace yourself, you would be seeing much more of me than you intend to. By the way, I'll take the room right…" He pointed to the door after Camilla's.
I could feel panic seize my chest, before the wave of relief that washed over me after his fingers passed her door.
I couldn't have him knowing she was here, until he was out of my house.
"...there." He tapped my shoulders gently.
"I'll see you in the morning brother."
With that, he turned his back to leave.
I could do nothing besides stand and watch him, but I knew something was amiss.
First, a board meeting had been scheduled behind my back. Now, he was here.
Something was terribly off, and I needed to find out what it was.
