Chapter 26

Elizabeth Summers’ POV
When I finished my last lesson of the day Jasper and Adam were waiting for me outside. Jasper took hold of my waist and kissed me passionately, pulling me close to him. The moment his lips touched mine it felt as though the world around me melted away. I put my arms around his waist and returned his kiss.
An involuntary moan left my lips as he deepened our kiss. It didn’t seem to matter how many times I kissed him, I couldn’t seem to get enough of him. I pulled him closer.
“Ok you two, that is quite enough of that,” Patti said as she walked up behind me.
Jasper groaned in frustration but he stopped kissing me anyway. He kept his arms around me and spun me around so we were both facing Patti and Adam. From the way he was holding me, I think he was using my body to shield his arousal. Even thinking about that made me blush.
“What was your plan for this little get together anyway?” Patti asked, her tone was a little brighter than usual. I regarded her suspiciously, her mood wasn’t this jovial a few moments ago.
“I thought we could all go for a coffee together,” Jasper suggested.
Patti nodded in agreement.
“I know the perfect place,” Patti replied.
She told us about a small place in the nearby human town. I hadn’t been to this place before but I had seen it in passing a few times when I visited Patti or Mia, it looked nice. We agreed to meet there in a few minutes before I headed to Jasper’s car and Patti headed to Adam’s.
I got into the car beside Jasper but I continued to watch Adam and Patti walk away towards his car. Patti was looking up at Adam and smiling as she spoke to him. I had seen her act like this before. This was what she looked like when she had a crush on someone but Adam wasn’t a normal guy. This could only lead to heartbreak.
How was I going to talk her out of pursuing him? I couldn’t think of a way to warn her off without hurting her or giving away what we are. I thought about it the whole drive to town and most of the walk to the coffee shop. She was my friend and as much as I like Adam, she couldn’t date him. He couldn’t give his heart to her. He only wanted his mate and he would know already if that was her so their relationship would be doomed from day one.
Jasper seemed to realise I was deep in thought and he didn’t ask me too many questions. He sat me at one of the tables at the front of the coffee shop and ordered us both a coffee. He was back with our coffees a few minutes later. He placed the coffee down in front of me then pulled me close and kissed my neck.
Shivers of pleasure ran down my spine. I had no doubt that if I could contact my wolf right now she would be begging me to let Jasper mark me. It would feel amazing to give in right now, to let his teeth pierce my neck. The pain would only last a couple of seconds and then I would be able to feel the bond in the same way as Jasper already could.
“Do you two ever stop kissing?” Patti asked.
Adam sat down at the table and Patti sat down beside him.
“There’s nothing wrong with kissing your mate. Soulmate,” Adam quickly corrected his error.
We all glanced in Patti’s direction anxiously but she hadn’t seemed to notice what Adam said. She must have been too busy gazing into his eyes to notice what he actually said.
“I have heard the sex is amazing too. Is it true what they say about it being the best you will ever have?” Bev asked.
She sat down opposite me at the table. I wasn’t sure if her question was directed at me or Jasper but it made me very uncomfortable. I didn’t understand why everyone seemed to have some kind of obsession with my sex life, or lack of it.
“I don’t think that is any of your business,” Oliver said.
He sat between Bev and I but all of his attention was on her. He caressed her cheek as she took a sip of her coffee. I had never seen the two of them together doing anything other than kissing before, they actually seemed like a cute couple. Maybe that is why he wanted to get back with her so desperately.
“There is nothing wrong with talking about sex. Why are humans such prudes?” Bev asked.
Oliver looked at her as though she had lost her mind. I would have thought Bev would be better at talking to humans, Oliver wasn’t the first one she had dated.
“Where’s Mia?” I asked, trying to change the subject.
“She didn’t feel comfortable being around so many people,” Oliver replied.
“That is a shame,” Patti said.
She leaned in closer to Adam, who looked a little startled by her behaviour. I don’t think he knew how to handle her interest in him. Most werewolves would back off if someone told them they were waiting for their mate but with Patti there was no easy way out. He would have to reject her advances the way humans do.
“Anyway, let's get to the important question. What are you all wearing to prom?” Bev asked.
“I haven’t even thought about it yet,” I replied.
Prom was still a month away, shortly before my birthday. I guess now that Jasper and I were together we would be going together but other than that I haven’t thought about it. A few weeks ago I hadn’t even planned on turning up.
“I’m not going,” Patti mumbled.
“Why not? It is prom, everyone has to go to prom,” Bev started to go on and on about how important prom was, completely ignoring Patti’s reaction. Patti was looking down and she was nibbling on her lower lip, I might even go so far as to say she was holding back tears.
“Nobody asked me to go with them.” She mumbled, causing everyone around the table to fall silent.
“That doesn’t seem right. How about I go with you?” Adam asked.
“As my date?” Pattie’s whole face had lit up in excitement. Adam gave Patti a sympathetic look and I was sure he was about to agree to this date with her.
I couldn’t believe it. Surely he could see how easily this could backfire on him. There was a month between now and prom, what if he met his mate during that time? He could end up hurting both of them.
I reached out my foot to kick him but he preempted me and moved his legs away from me. He glanced over in my direction briefly. I whispered my objection quietly so the humans wouldn’t hear what I said and he shook his head in response.
“Yes, you would be my date,” Adam replied.
Patti squealed in joy causing Oliver to cringe in embarrassment.
“My parents are going away in a couple of weeks and I thought we could have a house party,” Oliver said in an attempt to distract Patti.
It didn’t quite work out how he planned it. Patti was excited before but now she was practically bouncing in her seat with excitement. Oliver rolled his eyes. Usually Mia and I acted as a buffer when Patti got like this but Mia wasn’t here. I guess it was all up to me.
“Are you sure that is a good idea? What if people find out and everyone from school turns up?” I asked.
“That would be great, I can even get my brother to bring some alcohol over,” Oliver suggested.
“This doesn’t sound like a good idea,” I replied.
“Oh come on. We are at high school, we are meant to do stupid stuff every so often. Why do you have to act like such an adult all the time?” Patti complained as Oliver nodded in agreement.
This was the way it always seemed to go. The two of them bickered constantly because they were too similar to each other. The only time they ever stopped fighting was when they joined together to argue with me. At least it got them to stop fighting for a moment.
“It will be fine, you shouldn’t worry so much,” Jasper said.
He pulled my chair closer to him and pressed his lips against my neck. His kiss made me feel warm and tingly, completely distracting me from the conversation around me. The conversation continued on but I didn’t hear much of it. The only thing that I could think about was the way Jasper made me feel. I couldn’t deny that he had an effect on me any longer.
This may have started with me going along with Jasper when he said we would be bonded mates but it wasn’t like that anymore. I actually wanted to be his mate.
