Chapter 9
Elizabeth Summers’ POV
I had been sitting on the sofa at home for the last half an hour waiting for Oliver to pick me up. I had been avoiding him ever since this morning, in fact I had been avoiding everyone since this morning. I didn’t want to have to deal with any of them. Oliver with his stupid ideas about our relationship, my other friends trying to push us together or Jasper and his mind boggling behaviour of the last few days.
I had considered more than once messaging Oliver to cancel whatever tonight was. Then I could spend the whole night locked in my room instead, pretending that the world around me hadn’t suddenly gone crazy. Unfortunately, the thought of letting people down made me feel worse. I was left with no option other than to face my fate.
“Are you ok dear? You have been distracted all afternoon.” Jasper’s mom asked.
“It is nothing.” I said.
“No offence Liz but you are a terrible liar.” She replied.
“Ok. I agreed to go to the game tonight with a friend and now he is acting as though it is a date. To make things worse Jasper has been acting very strangely about the whole thing and I don’t know what to do.” I said.
She smiled at me. I had just told her my problems and she was smiling, what was that about?
“You should tell your friend that he doesn’t have a chance with you. It will hurt him but he will move on. As for Jasper, he has his reasons for the way he acts but he needs to tell you that himself.” She said.
I sighed. She was right. I knew that I needed to do something about Oliver but it was so difficult. I only had three friends and I didn’t want to lose one of them. I hated the idea of hurting him but I couldn’t see a way around it anymore.
I heard Oliver’s car pulling up outside of the house. I was sure that Jasper had already left but I wasn’t going to risk another incident like what happened the other night.
“Thank-you for your advice, I have to go.” I said.
I jumped off the sofa and practically ran to the door, arriving just in time. I opened the door just as Oliver was getting ready to knock. He was dressed in a shirt and a pair of dress trousers. I had never seen him dressed like this before and I had seen plenty of pictures of him on dates with other women on social media. It seemed very odd. This wasn’t the way people dressed to see a game even if they were on a date.
“You look beautiful.” He said.
“Don’t be silly, this is just what I was wearing this morning.” I replied.
“If Jasper hadn’t gotten in my way I would have told you then as well” He said.
I rolled my eyes and walked past him towards his car. I was so sick of the two of them putting me in the middle of their dick measuring contest.
I let myself into his car, slamming the door behind myself. My poor mood seemed to have no impact on Oliver though. He got into the car behind me with a huge smile on his face. I spent the journey looking out of the window while Oliver spoke about his plans for the weekend. It sounded as though he was trying to persuade me to go on a proper date with him but I shut him down every time.
“Oh shit, I didn’t realise how busy it would be.” Oliver said as we drove into the carpark.
“It is always busy on game night.” I said. I didn’t normally come but I had heard Jasper complaining enough about it to know what I was saying was true.
“It is ok, there is a space over there.” Oliver said.
I followed his gaze to where Jasper was standing with his friends, the rest of the football team and a few of their cheerleader groupies. Jasper saw the car approaching and his face dropped instantly.
“Don’t park there, look there is a space over by the trees.” I said, even I could hear the desperation in my voice.
Oliver completely ignored me and parked his car directly in front of Jasper. He stopped his car and looked directly at Jasper, a smile came over his face. That was the moment the pieces finally fell into place. This was never about me, it was always about Jasper.
I felt like a complete fool for not noticing it sooner. Oliver had started showing an interest in me a few months ago. A few weeks after his cheerleader girlfriend broke up with him. He had really enjoyed being in a relationship with someone so popular but she had another motive.
The girl was called Bev, as well as being a cheerleader she was also a member of Jasper’s pack. She dated Oliver because she thought she could turn him against me but dumped him when that didn’t happen. Ever since she has been practically throwing herself at Jasper in hopes of becoming luna.
I don’t think that anything has happened between them but Oliver blames Jasper for their breakup. Now I could see the way that Oliver was looking at Jasper and Bev, it was abundantly clear that he wasn’t over it.
This was why he was so desperate to go on a date with me. It was also the reason why he was so adamant for me to go with him tonight. He knew Jasper would be here and see us together. What I didn’t understand was why he thought being with me would upset Jasper.
He was still smiling as he turned his attention back to me. He leaned forward, he ran his fingers across my cheek. I pushed his hand away but that didn’t stop him. He put one hand on the back of my neck and the other around my waist, he tried to pull me towards him and kiss me.
“What the heck Oliver, why do you keep touching me? You are acting like a perverted octopus.” I shouted as I pushed him away.
There was a loud growl. I looked up to see Jasper and Nico dragging Oliver out of the car. The door next to me opened, Adam took hold of my arm. Adam was Jasper’s future gamma, he had never been involved in bullying me. We mostly just kept out of each other's way.
“Come with me.” Adam said.
“What, why, what is going on?” I asked.
“Just come with me please, I have to keep you safe.” He said.
I rolled my eyes at his macho bullshit but I followed him anyway. There was something about his presence that was comforting, I wondered if that might mean he could be my mate.
As I walked away I glanced over my shoulder. Jasper and Nico had Oliver pinned against his car, they were whispering angrily in his ear. I couldn’t hear what they were saying but there was one word that I could swear Jasper said. I was sure that he said luna.
I guess that meant that he knew who his luna was going to be. I wondered who it would be and why he hadn’t mentioned anything to the pack. Most of all I wondered why thinking about this was making my chest feel tight.
As Adam took me towards the football field I tried to shrug off these worries. It was probably only a concern over the future of the pack anyway.
