Chapter 52
Elizabeth Summers’ POV
Jasper had spent the last week reassuring me that there would be at least a few omegas who wanted to join our new pack. I never really believed him, I thought that the omegas in our pack would be too afraid of getting caught to take a chance on us. But as it turns out he was right.
There were hundreds of them crammed into the small clearing that we were using as a meeting place. Many of them were people that our pack had classified as omegas just because one of their family members was an omega. In any other pack they would have remained unranked and not had to endure the treatment that the pack forced omegas to endure.
They were probably coming with us in the hopes of getting a better life for them and their children. It was a huge risk on their part but I could understand why they would take it. It was their only chance they had at freedom, I would have done the same thing in their position.
“Shouldn’t Sasha have arrived by now?” Nico complained.
We were all starting to feel nervous about staying here, he was just the most vocal about it. We all knew that the longer we stayed here the more likely it was that someone would find us and try to stop what we were doing.
“Yes, she was meant to arrive half an hour ago.” Jasper replied.
“Maybe we should get everyone moving to the new pack. Jasper and I will stay behind to wait for her.” I suggested.
Nico nodded his head in agreement before leaving us to make the arrangements. Jasper was tense beside me, I could tell that he was uncomfortable about the plan even though he hadn’t said anything. I am pretty sure that his new omega instincts were telling him to get as far away from this place as possible. I can remember what that felt like but things were different now. I had to be strong.
There were only four people who knew where the new packs was located. Nico and Adam would be able to show the group where they needed to go but Jasper and I had to stay back and wait for Sasha. She might be in trouble but we couldn’t give up on her so easily. That would be dooming her to spend her life with Michael and I couldn’t do that to anyone.
Jasper held onto me tightly as the rest of our new pack slowly made their way back to their cars and drove out of the clearing. There were so many of them that their convoy would be difficult to miss, I guess we just had to hope nobody would be looking for us yet. There were still a few hours until we were meant to arrive home from school, hopefully that would be enough time for us to meet up with Sasha and get far away from the pack.
“How long should we wait before we go looking for her?”
Just as the words left Jasper’s lips a small brown wolf ran into the clearing. I knew instantly that this was Sasha’s wolf but this wasn’t what we had planned. We had packed a car with her belongings and parked it a couple of miles away from where she was meant to be having her date with Michael. She was meant to sneak away and drive over to us. For her to come here in her wolf form, it must mean that something had gone horribly wrong.
As she was shifting back into her human form I sent Jasper to get some clothes for her to change into from our car. I had planned to ask her what had happened but once she was back in her human form I could see the panic in her eyes.
“We need to get out of here.” She told us, still breathing heavily after the run here.
“That is a good idea, we can talk on the way.” I agreed, starting to move towards our car. Sasha followed closely behind me, still putting on the clothes that Jasper brought over as stumbled along behind me. I was only a few steps away from the door when I heard the sound of someone else entering the clearing.
“So it’s true then.” Jasper’s mom cried as she joined us in the clearing. My head was spinning, if she was here then others couldn’t be far behind. We had to leave now or we would be stuck here forever, we would never get another chance like this. If they took us back now then Michael would never let us out of his sight again.
“When that omega told me that you were planning to leave the pack I thought she was trying to cause a rift between us. How could you do this to me after everything we have done for you?” She screamed.
She was clearly angry but she wasn’t as angry as me. She might have thought that she was a good parent but in my eyes she had lost all rights to that title. Even if I ignored all the years where she stood by and did nothing to protect me, giving me over to another alpha like a gift was enough to make me want to cut all ties with her. She was lucky that I couldn’t stick around for long enough to go through all her inadequacies.
“I put a roof over your head when your mom died, and this is how you repay me?”
I froze in place with my hand hovering over the handle of the car door. All my life I had been told that my parents had given me up in favour of a son. I had never looked into my past or tried to find out who my mother was because I didn’t want to waste my time with someone who didn’t want me in their life. Was that the reason she had lied to me, so that I wouldn’t dig too deeply into my past? What else was she hiding from me?
“We have to go,” Jasper whispered. He was already in the driver's seat and he looked to be completely unaffected by her words. I knew there was more to this but right now I had other problems to solve.
“If this is about money then I will pay you back for giving me a place to stay but don’t act like you were a mother to me when you tried to sell me to another alpha.” I replied before getting into the car and slamming the door behind me.
The look on her face as we drove away was almost enough to make me want to stop the car and apologise for the way I spoke to her. But I had to remember that she had lied to me for most of my life, she could have told me the truth about my family at any point and yet she chose to keep it from me. She deserved my anger, if she ever wanted to be part of my life again then she would have to find some way of making it up to me.
“Did you know about my mom?” I asked Jasper as soon as his mom was out of sight.
“Can we talk about this later, there might be more of them out here looking for us.” He pleaded. I could see Sasha shifting her weight awkwardly in the backseat. He was probably right about this not being the time or the place to discuss this, but I didn’t care, I was angry and I wanted answers.
“No, I am sick of being lied to. Tell me what you know.” I growled.
“I don’t know anymore than you do, I just knew my mom was lying. Whenever she lies she can’t make eye contact, she did that every time she spoke about your mom. I have tried asking her for the truth a few times but she has never once changed her story, until now.”
I nodded my head in agreement. She probably intended not to ever let me know the truth about my mother, she only said as much as she did because she was so angry at me. I had never given her any reason to be angry at me before, I had always acted the way she wanted me to.
“Shit.” Jasper mumbled, pulling me out of my thoughts.
“Someone is following us.” He told us, his eyes were on the rearview mirror and the dark car which was following a few metres behind us.
