Chapter 37
Elizabeth Summers’ POV
The fear of what Adam might do was strong enough for me to not let Patti out of my sight for most of the morning. So far nothing had happened other than Patti thinking that I had lost my mind and Jasper getting frustrated. He didn’t like my attention being on Adam, I was unmarked and he didn’t like me even looking at other men.
So far he was doing well not to lose his temper. He was acting more possessive, not letting me out of his sight and touching me constantly but that was all. Right now I was in class and I could see him waiting for me outside of the classroom, looking through the window in the door. The corners of my mouth lifted up on their own accord just thinking of him, when did he start having that effect on me?
“Miss Summers, are we keeping you from something?” The teacher, Mrs Matherson asked, drawing me out of my daydream and almost making me fall out of my seat.
“Errm, no.” I mumbled. I might not be giving this lesson my full attention but I didn’t see what the big deal was. I had already answered all the questions she set us for today's lesson anyway, why wouldn’t she just let me go? She used to let me leave early when I finished all my assignments.
“You might be the next luna of this pack but in this room, I am in charge.” She shouted, looking at me with such disdain. I didn’t like that look on her face and I had no idea where it was coming from. She was at the party the other week and she cheered with everyone else when I was announced as Jasper’s luna. So what was this about?
I didn’t have time to fully process what was happening. Jasper had heard the way she spoke about me and he didn’t like it one bit. He burst through the door, looking as though he was ready to kill her. Mrs Matherson, jumped up from her seat and backed herself into the wall, putting some extra distance between her and Jasper.
“You can’t talk to your future luna and alpha female like that. You need to show her the respect that she deserves.” Jasper growled. Mrs Matherson shook and whimpered, pressing her back firmly against the wall. The other werewolves in the class remained silent at their desks, not wanting to draw the attention of the angry alpha.
The bell rang to signal the end of the lesson. Pack members jumped out of their chairs and ran towards the door, carrying their books and coats in their arms as they fled. After a few seconds the only people left in the room were Jasper, Mrs Matherson and me.
“I didn’t mean to disrespect your luna, I promise.” Mrs Matherson’s voice was cracking under the stress. Jasper rolled his eyes, he clearly didn’t believe her sincerity.
“You are lucky that I aren’t the alpha right now because if I was then you would no longer be in this pack.” Jasper growled. I came up beside him and placed my hand in his. He turned his head towards me and his eyes instantly softened. He wrapped his arms around me tightly, kissing my cheek and lips repeatedly. His short kisses quickly changed into longer seductive kisses as his tongue entered my mouth and ran along mine. By the time he broke our kiss, we were alone.
“What was that about?” I asked. Even though I wasn’t really expecting him to have an answer it made me feel better to ask.
“Her daughter found her mate last week. He is an omega who works on one of the farms. She seems happy and wants to move out to his cottage but her mom wants to prevent it. She has asked for my father’s help. He obviously refused, he doesn’t interfere with mates.” Jasper replied. I nodded my head. Now everything was falling into place.
If Mrs Matherson’s daughter accepted her mate it would mean that she and any children they had together would effectively be omegas too. With the way that omegas were treated in this pack, I could see why that would make her unhappy and why she would want to stop it. Omegas couldn’t hold normal jobs and they had strict rules which governed every aspect of their lives.
The only exception to this was if an omega was mated to a ranked pack member. There was no reason given for this exception. I guess it is just a matter of those who make the rules not having to follow them. I could see why this would be frustrating but I don’t know why they would take that out on me.
I didn’t make the rules, if I wasn’t mated to Jasper then I don’t know what would have happened to me. I was adopted by the alpha family but I was still an omega and I would have probably suffered the same fate as any other omega in this pack. I wonder what the pack would make of someone who was born an omega, taking over the pack as their alpha. I shuddered at the thought, this wasn’t going to be easy.
My mind was still wandering as Jasper led me through the corridors towards the canteen. He was silent as we walked with his hand around my waist, he was content just to be by my side. Glancing at him I could tell that he was also deep in thought and I wondered if he had similar concerns as I did about the future.
Patti was already sitting at one of the tables in the canteen when we got there. She was sitting between Oliver and Mia and all three of them looked utterly miserable. Jasper sat down at the table opposite them and pulled me into his lap.
Most of Jasper’s usual crowd were already sitting on a table at the other side of the room. When they saw us sit down they all started making their way over to us. All that was except for Bev, she and a couple of her friends stayed put. She was looking longingly at Oliver while he scowled at her.
“Where is Adam?” I asked. I was slightly worried that I would miss his attempt to win over Patti while we were dealing with Mrs Matherson. That didn’t seem to be the case though, he was nowhere to be seen.
“How the heck would I know? He is probably back in the dark ages along with his view on dating.” Patti replied. A few people around the table laughed but her words made me cringe. It might sound to everyone else like a light hearted comment but I recognised that tone. She was still hurting over his rejection the other night.
The werewolves around the table started to talk about mates. Patti and Oliver were too busy with their own thoughts to notice the odd use of language. Mia noticed however, she was always paying close attention to her surroundings. She scowled at them in confusion but she was too shy to speak in front of such a large group so she went back to eating her lunch.
A few minutes later Adam walked into the canteen. He glanced around the room until he laid eyes on Patti. A smile crossed his face as he walked over towards her. Patti was completely unaware of what was about to happen, her full attention was on her lunch.
“Patti,” Adam said. He was standing inches away from her, her eyes slowly rose from the food in front of her to meet his gaze. There was hurt in her eyes but she quickly covered it with a smile that was much too bright to be genuine.
“How can I help you?” She asked.
“You are an amazing woman and I am an idiot for not seeing it sooner. Will you go on a date with me?” He asked, a huge smile still plastered over his face. Patti blinked, she looked at Adam as though he had suddenly grown an extra head.
“Are you going to make me get down on my knees and beg?” Adam asked.
“What is going on? You weren’t interested in me a couple of days ago, why do you suddenly want me so badly?” Patti asked. There was an edge of hurt in her voice. Adam recognised it too, his smile faltered slightly but only for a second. He closed the remaining distance between them and took her hands in his.
“You are the one Patti, you are my soulmate.” He spoke loud enough for the whole room to hear and his eyes were on Patti’s the whole time. The room had been quiet, intent on what Adam was doing but now it was ridiculously loud. Everyone was talking about Adam and Patti, I could hear the word mate being mentioned by many of them.
The only person in the whole room who didn’t seem excited by Adam’s declaration was Patti. Her eyes were wide with shock and she looked as though she was considering running away. Her hands were still in Adam’s and he was running his thumbs over her knuckles. The seconds seemed to stretch out to minutes, the two of them looking into each other's eyes while everyone around them gossiped around them.
“Fine.” Patti finally responded.
“That’s great, I will take you out to dinner tonight.” He leaned down and kissed her cheek before walking back out of the canteen with a definite spring in his step. Patti turned back towards me slowly.
“I have a date but we didn’t make any arrangements. How is he going to know where and when to meet me?” Patti asked. She looked as though she was still in shock.
“I think he was too excited to think that far ahead. I will give him your phone number.” I replied.
“I have a date.” Patti said again, her cheeks turning pink.
