Chapter fifteen

Chapter fifteen - I didn't expect this

"They say things we want the most is what we can't have."

[ K A T O ]

It's been a month (I think) since the whole rejection thing happened. I'm not sure anymore, it's like I've lost a track of time. I can't concentrate on the simplest of tasks or conversations, not to mention the whole school thing.
My parents offered me to take a year off if I don't feel like struggling with classes when I've lost part of myself.

Instead of crying over someone I never knew, I'm trying to live my life at it's fullest. And by that I mean - food, sleep, school and training grounds.

"Kato, are you paying attention?", my little inner rant of the whole fiasco over the current situation has been interrupted by my math teacher. I groaned in annoyance.

"No, I'm not", I replied, without bothering to cover myself. I rather am honest than coming up with a stupid lie, which could set me up later on.

"Care to share what exactly is so important to think about right now? I do understand that math is not the most interesting subject for most teens, but everyone in this class has to work hard, in order not to fail on exams", she crossed her arms in front of her chest, as she spoke, clearly gaining the attention of the whole class.

"No biggie, some teenager drama. Please, do carry on with the subject", I smiled at her politely and she nods in approval, before turning her back to me and explaining some stuff to other students.

There's the reason why I didn't lie. If I would risk and say that I've been paying attention - she would make me solve those problems on board, but my mind is too occupied with problems of my own.

Soon the bell rang and the class was over, everyone rushed to get out, while I acted like a snail.

"Kato, could you please stay for a couple of words?", the teacher spoke. That's exactly what I need.

"Sure", I mumbled, grabbed my stuff and approached her desk.

She stood up and mentioned at the door in the farthest corner of the classroom. We went there in silence, seems like this conversation is about to get serious if she's inviting me to her office.

As we entered the little, closet-sized office room, she locked the door behind us and offered me to take a seat, which I gladly did.

"Kato, I'm not worried about your grades. The reason why I asked you to join me here is that you've been distant and seem to go through a lot of things. We're all worried about you", she sighed and looked down at her fingernails.

"I'm fine miss, I just need some time to think things through. I'm pretty sure that by now everyone has heard what happened", I smiled awkwardly. It's not that I mind talking about this, it's more that I feel uncomfortable. I've never spoken about my feelings or problems out loud. I've been trained to keep my emotions hidden, so this is quite unusual for me.

"Listen, I'll be straight forward with you. I'm pretty sure that you do know what's the position my father holds, am I right?", she suddenly looked me straight into eyes, her face holding nothing but serious expression.

Instead of using words I just nod. By now I'm pretty eager to know where is she going with this.

"As part of the elder's council, he is pretty much informed about everything, what happens in the pack, including the lead Alpha family.
I know I might bare the consequences after holding this conversation with you, but despite all odds, I'm sure you need to know some facts I've found out. Not willingly, more like accidentally", she smiled. The spark in her eyes said it all. Even despite her age and seemingly mature nature, somewhere deep down my teacher still is a rebel teenager.

"You got all of my attention", I encourage her to carry on.

"Alright, they all have been informed about the whole rejection thing, which happened in the past weeks.
I know, this won't be the topic you'd be eager to talk about, but someone has to let you know before it's too late", she leaned closer to me and took my hand in hers. The dedication in her eyes sparkled like millions of stars. I want to know what she is about to tell, even though I'm getting kinda impatient and pissed off for her taking her time.

I didn't say anything, I just kept my eyes on her, waiting for new information.

"Ok, so, to explain everything, I'll just say all I know. Be sure to listen carefully, we don't have much time and I won't risk speaking about this ever again, so take in each detail. And please do not interrupt me, ok?", she bit her lower lip. By her body language, tone of voice and actions it seemed like she's committing a crime, so I just kept quiet. She squeezed my hand and spoke.

"So, when you were just a child someone marked you. As theirs.
We all instantly knew that this someone is a vampire since the mark wasn't given by wolf and only vampires or wolves mark their soul mates.
Only after everything happened the elders started to discuss the situation and how serious it is.
Nobody knew at first.
I'm not talking only about the pack.
I'm talking about everyone, including elders.
Nobody did, that is up until two days ago they held a meeting in our house.
But it was unusual since elders from other packs joined this time.
A phenomenon, which has never happened before.
In a good way, thankfully.
Anyway, it turns out that both of you have made a great mistake.
No, don't jump into conclusions, just listen.
As one of the neighborhood council members said - things as such has never happened before.
The reason why you didn't die upon marking at such age was that he's a half breed. He's a child of different species parents. His mother is a vampire and father a wolf. Well, we haven't managed to find out is the father part true, but we assume it might be.
Yet, what's more, interesting is that you were destined to him, it wasn't just the marking, it was will of Moon Goddess", my jaw dropped. She's talking nonsense, this can't be real, so instead of running off I just laughed.

"Sorry for the language I'm about to use, but this is total bullshit. I'm a werewolf, somewhere out there is my mate and that little, arrogant piece of shit just ruined my early chances of meeting him. I'm grateful that he tried to save me and did, yet that was too much. Even for me".

"You don't understand. You were destined to him, not to a wolf. And the reason why I say that the reason why elders say that is easy - if he wasn't your mate, the mark had to disappear until your thirteenth birthday. But it didn't. It stayed strong in its place. Lukas is your mate, Kato.
The true mate", she whispered the last part. My heart was beating rapidly, I felt like I was about to throw up or just faint. This can't be happening. This can't be true, just... It just can't. No...

"Well, I didn't expect this"...
