Because I had been unable to head home after spending the night at Chad's, I had to repeat my outfit from the day before. We had both slept in his bedroom and he had lent me one of his shirts after a hot sexual activity that I couldn't stop thinking about. I was thankful for it because I loved how cozy being in his clothes made me feel.
I tried my best to focus on my immediate surroundings, waving off the distraction that pertained to Chad even though it was almost impossible to do so. It was as if my mind was running on nothing but him which was strange to me because I had never been so lost in thought about someone as much as I I currently occupied with him.
I walked into Stamps and Papers feeling grateful that Cornelius had called me back to work with them because I knew that if he hadn't, I would most likely have gone back to working with Chad and my thoughts were right, we would constantly have reason to argue that way. It was inevitable and I was akready scarred with I discussion with David, I didn't want to step foot in there for any reason whatsoever.
More importantly, I liked how Chad didn't stress that out and only agreed. Surely, he just wanted to know we were both in a good place. He had gone to work at the same time as me, dropping me off a few bus stops away after I had requested that he did not take me to work even though he was begging to.
Stamps and Papers was one of those companies that likes to act overboard when it came to implanting their name on everything they did and I found that out as soon as I walked into that glass sliding door.
The walls had all kind of papers stamped onto them and I refrained from rolling my eyes. We already got it, there was no need to elaborate on things.
The entrance was narrow and led straight to a receptionist. The beautiful, plus sized woman had her afro shining and her curls were all that caught my attention.
I cleared my throat and decided to stop making her feel uncomfortable by being too nosy. "I'm sorry, this is my first day here? I got a secretarial job but I really have no idea what I'm supposed to do." I told her.
"Oh, you must be from Cornelius," she said with a friendly smile, pulling the telephone out and dialing some numbers before pointing to the waiting stools, "please take your seat, I'll let him know you're here." She said and I allowed her to take things from there.
"Thank you so much." I said in agreement.
I waited patiently for a while and was almost throwm off my feet when a tall man walked into the room. "Okay, who is that hottie?" I mumbled under my breath. That better not be Cornelius.
I stood up when he began to approach me at where I sat.
I expended my hand first and he received it with one raised eyebrow. "You must be Nikki, right?" He began.
"Yes." I said, dumbfounded. Judging from his voice over the phone, I didn't expect him to be this much of a spec but he looked like he was complete heaven, everything romantic novels attempted to portray a man as.
"Welcome, are you doing fine now?" He wondered, stuffing his hands into his neatly ironed pants pocket. He had a pair of glasses that made him like a character hiding under the shade of nerd.
There was a stubborn lock of hair that fell on his face, it was that type that kept falling back regardless of the amount of time you shoved it out of your face.
"Huh?" I was confused by his questions and shook my head back to reality after remembering my excuse from the day before concerning the 'accident'.
"Oh yes, that, I'm fine now." I nodded.
"Great then, follow me, I'll take you to your post." He turned around on his heels and began to walk away. Not having very much of a choice, I followed behind him obediently.
"Thanks Aubrey." He said to the receptionist and she hummed in response. I caught her name, hoping we could talk some other time.
The floors were tiled and the remnant part of the room was painted a bright yellow, making the room seem like it was excessively brightened.
"I thought you wouldn't be resuming here." He began after a few minutes had passed.
"Of course not." I lied, adding a fake laugh for dramatic effect.
"That's okay." He said, "I'll send someone who will give you a quick tour and full details about working here." He said as we walked past a few people busy rubbing errands, or heading to their various offices.
The offices had white wooden doors and were arranged in a linear pattern on two sides of the new passage, leaving a narrow hall in the middle.
"Thank you." I said. I had transformed into a gentle human. Over the phone, he hadn't felt like the type of person to be taken seriously but right now, I felt like disrespecting him would be such a terrible sin.
My phone rang in my purse and I felt a little panic as I rushed to bring the small case open. I saw that the phone call was from Chad but I disconnected it regardless.
"I'm so sorry." I panicked, hoping I didn't offend him especially because that was something that would have pushed Chad off.
He looked at me like I was crazy and I got the message that he thought I was overreacting. I was clearly so used to working with Chad that I thought everyone must be like him.
Without saying a word, he continued to lead me forward, taking me to my supposed office.
I had a feeling I was going to like working here.
