Chapter 4

The moon was out, and everywhere was calm and serene. Fireflies fluttered around illuminating the place with their light.

The river was like a deep dark abyss this night, everyone moved to the front, all of us in our normal human form.

Many of the girls were dressed in pretty gowns and the boys suits. Well for me I just wore a normal shirt and a faded blue jeans, I thought that the guards would chase me away, instead they just looked at me then looked at each other, shook their head and let me in. Much to my frustration.

I let out a sigh, kicking away a pebble. I could hear the other girls whispering amongst themselves, saying how classless I was for dressing like a homeless person to such an important event.

I could hear, and I wish to speak, but I just couldn't. I just had to suck it up.

I tried searching to see if I could find Dennis in the crowd, but they were so many of us that I could barely even see him. I gave up as soon as an elder werewolf climbed up a podium.

The once chattering and loud place went quite, the elder werewolf was dressed in a silk gown, that had a slit that stopped at her mid thigh. She even had her dark hair that was slightly greying in a bun, her makeup was done to perfection. She was actually good looking for a woman her age.

"I would definitely hit that." The guy next to me whispered to one of his friends, which resulted to him snorting. I rolled my eyes at what he said.

The elder werewolf, began her speech of how amazing it is to be able to find your mate and how she discovered her mate through this same ceremony.

That this was a moment of pure joy for everyone here. During the mid point of the speech, I saw myself zoning out. I began looking around to see if there was anything that I could pay attention to, and I saw Kurt Higgins who stood tall and dashing in his black suit that looked tailored to perfection. And right next to him was Rachel Clark. Rachel Clark was easily one of the prettiest girls that I have seen around this parts and that's saying something.

Plus she was considered to be one of the strongest female in the entire pack, in terms of brute strength, agility, flexibility, and also rational thinking. It won't be a surprise to anybody if both her and Kurt end up together. They were literally a match made in heaven.

The elder werewolf had finished her speech and the former alpha of the pack also known as Kurt's father, Philip Higgins, came and told everyone that the Mate Picking Ceremony, is about to commence.

That everyone should form a line of both males and females standing on opposite sides, I put my hands deep into the pocket of jeans, letting out a deep breath I looked at the sky and said a silent prayer.

The floor opened up and out came waters that were crystal clear, you could see what's underneath. The moon was glowing on the water.

I looked around and saw Dennis, I waved at him. He saw me too, it actually looked like he was hesitant to wave but he did it anyways.

Philip told everyone to look into the water that the names of who they were going to end up with would appear inside the water.

Everyone did as they were told, well everyone except me that is.

Many people were happy that they got the partner that they were looking for, and for some reason I looked at Dennis to see a look of disappointment on his face. Maybe he didn't get me as a partner.

Suddenly I was curious to see who my partner was, but before I could say anything a loud scream cut through the air. Everyone went quiet, it was Rachel that let out the scream.

"No, no, no, no. T-this can't be happening! Why is this happening?!" She screamed at the elder werewolf who look like she was already used to outbursts like this.

"My mate is supposed to be Kurt Higgins. Not some random person I have no business with!"

"Calm down child, the Moon goddess is never wrong whenever it comes to things like this..."

She cut her off before she could say anything. "I don't give a fuck about the Moon goddess." Her saying this caused the entire crowd to gasp at such words that came out of her mouth.

To the wolves here they would never take disrespect of the Moon goddess lightly, and such blasphemous talk would result in a very big penalty. But I doubt if that would happen to her, due to her being a high ranking werewolf.

"Listen here, you little child. Simply because you just happened to be one of the best wolves around here, doesn't give you the right to be unruly." This was the most angry I have ever seen on the elder wolf being.

"I don't care what you say. This person is not my mate. I reject him," Rachel said with so much venom and anger in her tongue.

The elder wolf let out a sigh and rubbed the bridge of her nose with her index finger and her thumb.

"You can't just reject your mate, he is literally someone that Moon goddess has paired you with." The elder wolf tried reasoning with her.

Rachel fell down to her knees and began crying. I wanted to burst out into a fit of laughter on how comical she was behaving, but I didn't want to be disrespectful. So I let out a stifled laughter.

Next was Kurt Higgins, who looked into the clear water, it seems that everyone was holding their breath in anticipation of who was going to be the mate of Prince Kurt. Heck even I was a bit curios as well.

Kurt looked at the name, and looked up to the crowd, then back to the name written on the water.

"Alexa Cortex." He called out loud. I felt a chill ran down my spine.

It almost as if the Moon goddess was mocking me, or something.

"Alexa Cortex!" He called out once again, and I felt a huge lump formed at the back of my throat. Suddenly I get what Rachel was feeling. This can't be happening to me. Of all the people in this place, why me?

I almost felt like crying. I didn't want to move, I didn't feel like moving, until I felt a hand grip my upper hand and I saw myself being hoisted forward like I was nothing but a feather. I was face to face with the Alpha/Prince Kurt Higgins, his blue eyes piercing deep into my soul.

"Aren't you that girl I met the other day?" He asked.

"Yes I am."

"Would you look at that. I got a weakling." He said the last part to the crowd, as they all bursted out into a fit of laughter like he was some kind of comedian.

My face was red with embarrassment, and it almost felt like I was about to cry. But you know what, I am not going down without a fight.

So instead I said something that even a man like Kurt would never expect the likes of me to say to him.

"Well you won't have to worry about a weakling like me, cause I am not planning on being your mate. I Alexa Cortex, reject you Alpha Kurt."
