Chapter 122 Snooping

After lunch we return to the company. I’m a little distracted and not really paying attention to what the guys are saying. And not because we just had a run in with Mason.

That whole conversation is like a nonentity. It seems irrelevant compared to everything else that has been happening recently.

“Eden what do you think?” Noah asks, pulling me from my thoughts.

I stand still and blink up at them both. I haven’t got a clue what they want to know. What do I think about what?

“Er… I’m not sure. I’m going to go to the loo.”

They nod before returning to their conversation. Leaving the office, I make my way across the lobby and down one corridor, heading in the direction of the toilets.

The idea that my grandma has known about my parents’ murder for years and has done nothing about it is really bothering me. I just can’t grapple with it. It doesn’t make sense. Even if she wanted to protect me, she wouldn’t just allow someone to get away with killing my parents. Would she?

Surely, she’d have told the police her suspicions… Then again, I haven’t. Have I?

Entering the ladies’ toilets, I approach the sink. I look myself over in the mirror. There are black marks under my eyes and my skin looks tired. I guess that’s to be expected, seeing as how I’ve not really been sleeping.

I splash some water on my face. I should probably call the police and tell them that my parents were murdered but will they even believe me?

I need evidence. Real evidence.

If James sent me that email, then he either knows who killed my parents or he killed them himself. Making my way down the corridor, I find myself outside James Artie’s office. I turn the doorknob. Surprised to find it unlocked, I let myself in.

The room is quiet. I almost expected James to jump out at me and demand to know why I’m just letting myself into his office.

Taking advantage of the situation, I decide to have a look around. It’s not likely that he’d just leave incriminating evidence lying around. But its worth a shot, right?

I start with his desk, rifling through the documents on the top before rummaging through his draws. There’s nothing though and so I find myself glancing around the room, looking for somewhere new to look. My heart is racing as if I expect him to show up at any moment.

There’s a couple of filing cabinets against one wall. I guess that’s where I should look next. I glance towards the door before approaching the cabinets. The draws don’t open though. I swear under my breath as I turn back to the desk, searching for the key to the cabinets.

I don’t even know what I’m looking for. Something that might tell me what James has been doing with the company’s money?

Opening a small trinket box on the desk, I find a key. It looks like it might fit the lock on the cabinet. Jackpot. Just as I try the lock, I hear the sound of voices coming from the corridor.

In a panic, I look around for somewhere to hide. I guess this is what snooping around will get you… I’m going to get caught. The only place that I can think to hide is the small space under the desk but surely, I’ll get caught there.

It’s my only option though and so I crouch down, hoping that whoever I can hear in the corridor isn’t planning on coming in here. Except I have a horrible feeling that there was a reason why James’ office was unlocked.

They’re still far enough away that I can’t make out what they’re saying and my heart is pounding in my chest. What if James really did kill my parents? I’m putting myself right into his path… Talk about stupid decisions.

The voices stop right outside the door and I think I can make out a few of the words. It’s useless though because the words on their own mean nothing. Right then, I hear the sound of the doorknob twisting. They’re coming in here.
