Chapter 28 Moody Jerks Shouldn't Look That Attractive
The rest of the week sees the team holed up in the conference room. As I suggested, Noah has split the team in two and now there’s a competitive edge to everything they are doing. They’ve placed bets on which design will bring in the most money when they finally go live and the mood has definitely improved compared to how it was at the beginning of the week.
Holly passes by several times, clearly snooping but the team are highly original in their tactics for distracting her, doing everything from spilling coffee on her to practically forcing her out the door with a fake note from Mrs Clancy for Lewis Artie.
Stacey jumps to her feet. Dragging me from the conference room, she whispers in my ear, “Holly’s here. Don’t look.”
When someone tells you not to do something, what do you do? You do it, right? Instinctively, I look up and Holly looks like she’s on the war path as she strides towards us.
“I wouldn’t go in there if I were you,” Stacey tells her, sidestepping her.
“Why not?” Holly asks, exasperated. “Every day there’s something going on with you lot.”
“Rob’s just chucked up his guts,” I say the first thing that comes to my mind.
“Eww.” Holly pulls a look of disgust.
“Yeah, it’s really revolting in there,” I tell her. Faking a gag, I cover my mouth and she steps back, looking at me like I might be infectious. I do it again and it has the desired effect.
“I’ll come back later,” she says before turning on her heels and rushing back out into the lobby.
Stacey and I crack up laughing. I’m laughing so hard that I can barely breathe when Noah approaches us.
“What are you two up to?” he asks.
Bent over, struggling to get my breath back, I can only see his shoes and for some unexplainable reason that just makes me laugh harder.
“Holly…” I try to explain in between pearls of laughter.
“Holly was here?” he asks, his voice serious.
I should stop laughing. Here I am giggling like an idiot while he’s worrying that our team’s ideas are going to be stolen again. It takes a substantial amount of effort, but I manage to right myself. It’s harder to school my expression into something resembling maturity though.
“Yeah, we er… managed to convince her to leave,” I manage to tell him as I pat Stacey on the back. She’s as good as choking on her laughter.
“That’s good,” he says, looking between the two of us.
I feel like I have to explain how we did it or he’s just going to think we’re a pair of weirdos. He’s certainly looking at us like we’ve gone off the deep end.
“We told her that Rob had thrown up in the conference room.”
“That’s why you’re laughing like a pair of hyenas?” he asks, disbelievingly.
“Well, that’s a bit harsh. We were laughing because of our amazing acting skills.”
That earns me a smile. His entire face lights up for a second and it’s almost blinding. It nearly has me forgetting that he’s my pain-in-the-arse of a boss and not some cute guy I’ve just met in the street.
“Well, as grateful as I am that you got rid of the spy,” he says, “you might want to get back to work.”
Rolling my eyes, I say a quick, “yes sir,” before making my way back to my desk, Stacey hot on my heels.
“I don’t know how you do it,” she says with a smirk.
“Do what?” I ask, logging in to my computer.
“Work as Grisham’s assistant,” she says, sitting on the edge of my desk. “I can’t think of a worse job.”
“You work with him too,” I remind her.
“Yeah, but I can avoid him when I want to, just hide in my cubicle. You not so much.”
“I guess. Maybe I’m just used to him.”
“Like Monday mornings,” she says.
“Oh, god! He’s like the devil himself on Monday mornings.”
We both giggle happily at the idea.
“He’d still look good with a pair of horns though,” Stacey says with a sigh. “Moody jerks shouldn’t look that attractive.”
I don’t reply. I have more common sense than to tell Stacey that Noah Grisham is gorgeous. The last thing I want is to say something that might lead to gossip. As much as I like Stacey, I should at least try and stay professional. She might not know it, but I’m still Eliza Clancy’s granddaughter.
