Chapter 35 Can't Let Him Get Away With It

The team are all waiting for me in a huddle near the door, when I return to the department.
“What did they decide?” Rob asks.
“Mrs Clancy gave us permission to replace the products,” I tell them eagerly. “Stacey, Rob, head down to the factory and give them the good news, would you?”
“Yes, sir,” they reply in unison.
“Make sure they order the correct walnut wood,” I say. “Let’s get production back on track. I’ll call you shortly with the exact number of replacement products.”
Looking around, I notice that Eden is missing.
“Where’s Eden?” I ask.
“Don’t know, sir,” Stacey says. “She was here about twenty minutes ago.”
I’m disappointed. I wanted to tell her the good news.
“Right, everyone! Back to work,” I tell them, heading back into my office.
I leave the door open. I want to talk to her as soon as she comes back. Trying to distract myself with my work, I reach out to the sales team to find out the exact number of coffee tables that were sold since the date Mr Laurence received the email.
Frequently, I look through the doorway to Eden’s desk but she’s still not back even after I’ve called Rob with the number of additional tables that the factory will need to make.
I’m not sure why it bothers me so much that she’s not here. It’s not like I need her help right now.
Gradually, the usual bustle returns to the department just outside my office as the team’s worries fade. The excitement they had felt about our latest designs seems to return and I can hear them talking animatedly about their ideas.
A whole hour passes before Eden comes back and when she does I’m so far past impatient that I storm out of my office, demanding to know where she has been.
“Where were you?” I ask her, my tone far from friendly.
I’m not completely sure why I’m overreacting but I tell myself not to overthink it. She should have been at her desk! What if I’d needed her?
“I went to HR to see if I could find out who has had access to Becky’s email account,” she tells me. “I wanted to know who requested the change.”
“Did they tell you anything?” I ask, pulling her by the arm into my office. I don’t want the rest of the team to be distracted by this. We need to keep focused, keep moving forward with our new products.
“No. They said no one except Becky would have access to it, unless she chose to share it with someone.”
I’m not exactly surprised. It wouldn’t be that easy to find evidence against Lewis.
“I’m thinking I might call her,” she continues.
“Why bother?”
“Because we need to know who did it.”
“I would have thought that was obvious.”
“We don’t know for sure. We need to…”
“We already know who did it,” I tell her firmly. “Stopped wasting time on this. It’s pretty obvious Lewis Artie is behind it.”
“But…”
“No, Eden. I’m serious.”
“We can’t just let him get away with it,” she argues.
“That’s not what I’m saying,” I sigh.
“Then we need evidence!”
“Eden, we need to focus on our jobs,” I tell her sternly. “It’s not your responsibility to prove that Lewis Artie is a cheating b*stard.”
She looks disgruntled, her mouth moving into a pout. She wants to argue with me but she’s holding back. It’s almost disappointing. It’s one of the things I’ve come to like about her over the last month. She’s never scared to share her mind.
“Fine,” she mutters eventually.
I struggle to keep a straight face. Her stubbornness is adorable.
“Do you not want to hear the good news?” I ask her.
“Oh, I already heard,” she says. “Mrs Clancy says we can replace the products?”
Her words leave me disappointed. I really wanted to be the one to tell her. I’m not sure why it matters who told her.
“Yeah,” my tone muted.
“That’s really good news,” she says, smiling widely and that smile is enough to improve my mood.
I give myself a slight shake. I shouldn’t let myself get distracted. As pretty as Eden might be she’s still my assistant and that’s one boundary I have no intentions of breaking.
