Chapter 47 Pulling Stocks

I knock on my grandma's office door. Noah has sent me to get her signature on a couple of documents. I feel weirdly apprehensive. It will be the first time we've actually spoken since I came to work here. For the most part, I've been working hard to avoid her. I'm not sure either of us will be able to act like strangers.
What if someone other than Martin is in her office?
I've never been a very good actor. At least, I was never picked for my high school plays. And for good reason.
When I hear her call out for me to enter, I hesitate for a fraction longer before opening the door. I do my best to paste a smile on my face. As I feared, the room is full of people, mostly people I don't recognise but that doesn't mean they don't know who I am.
"Eden," she says far warmer than she should and I grimace.
"Hello Mrs Clancy," I say with what I hope sounds like polite nervousness. "Mr Grisham asked me to get your approval on these."
"Of course," she replies, holding out her hand for the documents. "He called to tell me to expect you."
Well, at least, Noah's polite nature gave grandma a chance to prepare herself. I suppose I should be grateful. Handing her the documents, I do my best to ignore everyone else's eyes on me.
"How are you finding your new job, Eden?" Grandma asks. Why she can't just leave that for dinner tonight, I have no idea as I struggle for an answer.
"It's great. Thank you."
"I understand you've become a real asset to the team," she remarks. I'm not sure if I should take her words seriously. Is she just saying that because she's my grandma or has Noah said something? "Noah has nothing but high praise for you."
"Thank you," I reply because it's all I can think to say under the circumstances.
"It sounds like you're right at home," she continues as her pen glides across one of the papers I need her to sign.
I wish she'd hurry up so I can get the hell out of here. No such luck though. My grandma seems to be having a field day watching me squirm. She's enjoying this far more than she should.
"You'll have to pop up here for a cuppa some time," she says eventually, handing me the files once again. "It's something I love to do with new hires."
"Of course," I respond as calmly as I can. "I'd love to."
I'm unsure if I can leave or if I should wait for her to dismiss me. It's really weird having my grandma be my boss. Not even just my boss, but my boss's boss.
"Er... If that's all Mrs Clancy, I'll let you get back to work," I say, glancing at the others. "You're clearly very busy."
"Thank you, Eden," she replies, smiling widely at me before returning her attention towards the others in the room.
Stepping outside, I breathe in a sigh of relief, resting my head on the door behind me. I take a few seconds to centre myself again before forcing myself to begin the walk back to our department, knowing that Noah will be waiting for the documents.
I'm almost all the way there when I pass by an office that has the door ajar. I think nothing of it until I hear the voices inside. It's not that I recognise them. I don't. They're not people that I've come to know during my time at Clancy's Comforts but their voices have a familiar tone to them and I wonder if I've heard them before at home, perhaps when grandma talked to the directors on speaker phone. Goodness knows, she does that often enough. She says she's not going deaf but I'm not convinced.
"I don't understand what's gotten into James," the first man is saying. "Refusing funding like that?"
"What was really weird was the way Mrs Clancy allowed it."
"Yeah, she didn't hesitate to offer to finance it personally. That's not normal."
"Do you think we should be worried?" the second man asks, his voice tainted with concern. "Time to consider pulling stock, perhaps?"
"No. Surely not. I mean it's Clancy's Comforts," the first man replies, laughing slightly at the idea.
"It's just weird is all. You heard James arguing with Mrs Clancy the other day. That's not done."
"I wouldn't read too much into it."
"Erm... I'm not sure. I might pull my stock. Just to be safe, you know?"
