Chapter 31 Buying Time

“They want to recall it?” he blurts out angrily and like that his good mood vanishes.
Sighing, I tell myself I should have gotten evidence. There’s no way the rest of the team will believe that he was actually smiling earlier.
His hand covers mine on the computer mouse as he scrolls down. There’s even less room between us now but he’s completely focused on my computer screen.
“Eden, I need you to get the advertisement department on the phone,” he says authoritatively. “They can’t just recall the entire line.”
“Yes sir,” I say, picking up my phone.
He pulls away, rushing back around my desk before disappearing into his office. I’m kept waiting on the phone for a while. It would seem that no one in the Advertising Department has arrived yet. Glancing at my watch, I grow frustrated. It’s not that early.
Our team have started arriving, waving at me as they make their way to their cubicles.
“Any luck?” Noah pops his head around the door.
“They’re not answering,” I tell him.
“Right, grab the complaints and print off those emails,” he says before coming to stand opposite me.
I do as he asks, quickly gathering all the relevant information into a file. When I go to hand it to him, he shakes his head.
“Come on,” he says before walking out of our department.
I rush to chase after him.
“Where are we going?” I ask.
“The advertising department,” he says.
“You want to convince them?”
“No. I need to buy time.”
“Time for what?” I ask, intrigued.
“Time to work out what’s gone wrong,” he tells me as we step into the lift.
“Do you think they’ll give it to you?”
“Nope but I have to try. Even if we can just get them to stand down for twenty-four hours…”
I don’t have any idea what he thinks he can do with a day. It’s not enough time to find the problem, let alone fix it, but I don’t tell him that.
“Are there any common threads with the complaints we’ve had?” he asks.
“From what I can see, it’s mostly about the quality of the wood,” I tell him. “They don’t believe it’s walnut.”
“I chose that wood myself,” he tells me seriously. “I think we’re going to need to visit the factory. Head back upstairs and grab the contact information for the factory owner. I’m going to want to phone them as soon as I finish down here.”
“Yes, sir.”
Handing him the file, I turn on the spot preparing to rush.
“Eden,” he says, calling me back.
“Yes, sir?”
“Thank you.”
“I’m just doing my job, sir,” I tell him but I give him a wide smile. I might not want to admit it, but I like having him thank me. I can only imagine how I’d react if he were to tell me I was doing a good job.
Making my way back upstairs, I brush past Holly Sinclair.
“Everything alright?” she asks. “You look a little stressed.”
I don’t know what to think. Is she just being kind or does she know something? I’m becoming more and more suspicious every day. After seeing for myself the way she had been trying to gain access to our conference room all last week, I can’t help but wonder if maybe she or Lewis Artie have had a hand in these complaints.
Telling myself not to jump to conclusions, I tell her that I’m okay, just a little bit busy before darting around her and into my department. Everyone is busy at work and so no one notices me. I’m grateful. I really don’t want to have to be the one to tell them the bad news. We’ve only just gotten past the last disaster. We really don’t need another one.
I’m hoping Noah really will be able to fix it, preferably before our team even learn that there’s a problem.
“I heard you’ve had a string of complaints,” I hear Holly say in a false whisper.
I foolishly hadn’t noticed that she had followed me. The department goes quiet, everyone having heard what Holly said.
I try to act as unconcerned as possible, not bothering to reply to her as I search for the telephone number.
“Eden, is that true?” Rob asks, stepping forward.
I really don’t want to have to tell them. Noah should be the one to tell them.
Holly looks pleased with herself. “Oops, was it a secret?” she asks.
