Chapter 126 Waiting
While I wait for the police to arrive, I hurriedly search through Alice’s computer for anything about Luxen. I’m pretty sure that’s where the company’s money has gone and so it’s essential that I find the information about it as soon as possible.
I hear pounding footsteps and when I look up I see Noah coming towards me.
“What the hell is going on, Eden?” he demands.
“The police are on their way,” I tell him, my attention returning to the computer. “Where’s Lewis?”
“With Martin. What do you mean the police are coming?”
“I heard James… He’s leaving. He’s running away. I need to stop him.”
It’s clear from the look on his face that he’s not really following.
“James killed my parents.”
“I know.”
“You do?”
“Lewis…”
“Oh.”
“I called the police. He’s going to leave the country.”
“When?”
“Alice booked him a flight in four hours’ time.”
“So, we have time… What are you doing now?” he asks, his hand on my forearm.
“I need to find… There’s an account – Luxen. I need to…”
“That’s where he’s hiding the money?”
I don’t bother replying as I swear in frustration. There’s nothing on the computer that might help me.
“Eden, the police will find it.” He tries to pull me away but my eyes land on the door to James’ office. There’s no doubt he’ll have the information in there. Striding away, I push his hand off. He follows me into James’ office and with a sigh offers to help me.
“So, we’re looking for something marked Luxen?” he asks, rolling up his sleeves.
We’re still looking when the police arrive. “Miss Clancy?” one officer calls from the open doorway.
I jump slightly at the sound of his voice.
“You said you needed to report a murder and embezzlement?” he questions sternly. “Just what is going on here?” His eyes are darting around the messy office. There’s paperwork everywhere as I sit on the floor searching for one word: Luxen.
Noah steps towards the police officer, offering him his hand. “There isn’t much time and we have a lot to tell you.”
Getting to my feet, I suggest that the officers come with us to my office. I’m surprised so many officers came. It might have been the use of the word murder. I guess I did sort of make it sound like it had just happened.
When the doors to my office shut behind us, I turn to them and say the words that are hardest to say, “my parents were murdered.”
“Your parents?”
I can barely breathe as I tell them everything I know. It’s almost impossible to do and I’m grateful when Noah cuts in when I begin to shake from unshed tears. Martin helps too, showing the company finances and even Lewis pipes up that if I don’t fire him, he’ll be a witness when they take his uncle to court.
I want to tell him he can f*ck off but I don’t have the energy.
The police ask countless questions and then they leave, promising that they won’t let James Artie leave the country. They take Lewis with them and I’m left feeling suddenly bereft.
Martin and Noah are quick to reassure me that everything will be okay, Noah’s arms circling around me as I feel like I’m about to crumple to the ground, all the adrenaline that’s been keeping me going now leaving me.
Martin suggests that Noah take me home, saying that he’ll go to the hospital to check on my grandma.
I don’t have the energy to tell him that I should go see her too. I want to but I also want to sleep for a week. It’s been an exhausting day. So, instead of arguing with them, I allow Noah to lead me out of the office and down to the carpark.
Noah’s POV:
Eden was quiet as we drove through the city to her apartment and now she’s curled up on the sofa staring at her phone. She’s waiting for the police to call and tell her that they’ve caught him. His plane has already left without him and there’s a manhunt in progress.
We’ve turned on the news but it’s muted. There’s some speculation as to why the airport is filled with police officers but other than that there’s nothing helpful on there.
She should sleep. It might be days before we hear news. But there’s no telling her that. She’s wide awake and restless. I offer her a cup of tea before pulling her into my side, wanting to give her whatever comfort I can.
When her eyelids finally droop and her breathing changes, I pick her up and carry her into her bedroom. Placing her gently in her bed, I smile softly at her. I can’t wait for all of this to be over. Once James is arrested and our lives go back to something resembling normality, I’m going to ask Eden to marry me.
I’m going to make her my wife and then I’m never to leave her side.
