Chapter 36 Being Intentionally Disobedient

Eden’s POV:
For the most part things return to normal. Noah is as busy as ever, attending meetings and working with the team on the new products.
Even though he told me not to, I can’t resist looking into the email. I drop Martin a quick text on Tuesday asking him if he can find anything out from the IT department.
I’m impatient as I wait for him to get back to me and when his response does come on Friday, he tells me only that the email was sent from my computer.
“But that doesn’t make sense,” I say in a hushed voice.
I don’t want anyone to hear my conversation. For one thing, if Noah hears me, he’ll be cross but I also don’t want the others to know what is going on. They’ll only worry.
How could someone use my computer without me knowing? Or without someone seeing?
“What time was it sent?” I ask, struggling to remember myself.
“Around midday.”
“So, the department could have been out to lunch,” I mutter to myself. “But we rarely all eat at exactly the same time…”
Pulling out my diary, I scroll back to see if I’ve noted down anything regarding my lunch plans that day. There’s nothing there. Surely, someone would have seen someone using my computer…
“I’m going to check the CCTV,” he tells me before I can ask him to.
“Thank you, Mar–” I begin but stop abruptly when Noah comes out of his office. “I have to go.”
“No problem, Miss Clancy,” he says as I hang up.
“Can you get me the finalised designs from Rob?” Noah asks. “I want to get these products onto the market as quick as possible.”
“No problem,” I tell him, getting to my feet.
He hesitates in his doorway. I wonder if he heard my conversation. What if he heard that I’ve got IT looking into the email? Or worse if he heard who I was talking to? How would I be able to explain knowing Martin?
I can deal with Noah getting angry with me about the email. It would only be fair really, seeing as how I’m intentionally disobeying him. But I really don’t want him to find out that I’ve been lying to him about who I am.
Not yet, at least.
Eventually everyone will find out but not yet. Will they even talk to me when they learn the truth? Or will they hate me for lying to them? I’m really beginning to value the friendships I’m making in the department. I don’t want to lose them.
Especially Noah.
He seems like the unforgiving sort. I can imagine him holding it against me, blaming me for not being honest.
“Eden, the finalised designs?” Noah repeats.
Flip me! Blinking, I nod my head. I’ve completely spaced out, lost in own thoughts while staring at Noah. He’s now grinning at me. At least he’s entertained rather than angry. I guess I should be grateful that it’s a Friday and he’s in a good mood.
I rush off towards Rob’s workstation, blushing scarlet.

Thirty minutes before I anticipate Noah will ready to go home, Stacey and Rob approach my desk, both ready to leave for the day. They’ve both got their coats on and Stacey has her handbag.
“We’re all going out for a drink,” Stacey tells me excitably. “You’ll come, won’t you?”
Glancing towards Noah’s office, I don’t want to refuse but I can’t leave until he does.
“Er… I’ll try and come by later.”
“Ah, come on,” Rob complains. “Surely, Noah can cope without you for an hour.”
I laugh at that. I’m pretty sure Noah doesn’t need me at all. He’s been holed up in his office all afternoon but that’s not really the point. It’s my job to be here just in case.
“Cope without Eden?” Noah’s voice carries over Stacey and Rob’s heads as he makes his way out of the staff kitchen with two coffees. He places one on my desk while taking a sip of the other. “I’m not sure that’s possible.”
Looking down at the steaming mug of coffee, I wonder to myself when he even left his office.
“Do you have a secret passageway that I’m unaware of?” I ask him.
He grins. “You were focused on your work.”
“You’ve got our job descriptions mixed up again,” I tell him with a smile of my own as I pick up the coffee.
He doesn’t reply before turning to look at the other two.
“We’re pretty much finished for the day,” he tells them.
“Do you want to come too, sir?” Rob asks him.
“No, thanks. I’ve got plans,” he says before making his way back towards his office. “Have a good weekend.”
Even though I know he’s going to see his granny, I’m disappointed. I’d have liked him to join us.
