Chapter 55 The Sort of Boss I Won't Be

Noah's POV:
She's frowning up at me as if I just asked her if she knows how to solve world hunger and not if she wants to go home. It's hard not to react. Covering my mouth, I feel my lips moving into a smirk beneath my hand.
"Come on," I say as strictly as I can muster. "Time to go home."
"But..." She looks down at her work.
I know for a fact, she's achieving very little staying here. It's been a long day and we've both done more than enough for one day. I need a break, even if she doesn't think she does.
Lifting my eyebrow, I wait for her to continue. She doesn't though, instead turning off her computer and putting away all her work.
"This is so frustrating," she says getting to her feet.
"What is?" I ask as I watch her grab her stuff.
"It's too slow. We're getting nowhere fast."
Grinning at her, I nod my head. She's right. It's infuriating but there's absolutely nothing we can do about it right now. All I can do is hail her a taxi and send her home so she can get a good night's sleep and we can start again tomorrow.
"I don't think we should be working on this stuff here," she says, her voice hushed.
"Here?" I ask, looking around. Why is she whispering? There is no one else here. No one else is stupid enough to still be working this late.
"In the office."
"Right..."
"Where anyone could walk in or overhear us..."
"Eden, we're perfectly alone right now," I say.
My words inspire a reaction in both of us that I hadn't intended. Her pupils dilate and she steps unintentionally towards me, just as I do the same before I come to my senses and step back again. This is not the moment to pursue... whatever this is. I'm not sure there will ever be a moment when I can pursue this. She's my assistant, my sexy as hell assistant, but I really don't want to be that slimy boss that messes around with his employees. Even the idea of it makes me recoil slightly.
"Time to go," I say more to myself than her.
I need to get myself under control. There is no way anything is happening between me and Eden Winters. Not now. Not ever. No matter how much I might wish that it could.
She looks like she wants to say something but she doesn't, choosing to gather her work and put it in her bag.
"Taking your work home?" I ask. It's already late. There's no way she's going to keep working at home. I won't allow it. Not that I can actually control what she does at home...
"It's not safe here, Noah. I'm serious." She's looking at me seriously, her eyes imploring me to understand. Maybe, she's right. Holly is always prowling about, looking for something she can take back to Lewis.
"Where would you rather we work?" My question this time makes her blush.
"Er... I don't know. Just not here."
It would be suspicious if we started meeting in cafes and stuff after hours and that leaves us with few options. And I certainly don't want to invite her back to my place. That is the worst idea EVER. If I am struggling to control my thoughts here in the office, I can only imagine how much I'll fail to maintain my distance if she's actually in my apartment. It would be hell on Earth, just trying.
"You could come to my place," she offers, her voice almost shy.
I think she might be trying to kill me. She definitely has no idea how interested in her I am because if she did, she wouldn't be tempting me so damn much. Unless she actually enjoys watching me suffer.
Trying to think up a way to refuse, I glance away towards the doors, catching sight of Holly Sinclair watching us. Well, I can hardly refuse her offer now, can I? Not when her point is well and truly proven! Damn you, Holly Sinclair!
"Alright," I find myself agreeing, my words hushed so that Holly definitely won't overhear us. "Tomorrow after work I'll come to your place."
"I know you think I'm overreacting," she says, "but I think it's safer this way."
"You're right. It is."
I should tell her that Holly is watching us but it will just make her even more suspicious and give her more to worry about. I'm not completely sure why she's so invested in our little investigation. I feel protective of Mrs Clancy because of everything she's done for me and my family but Eden hasn't had the same experience. She barely knows the woman.
Instead of saying anything else, I lock my office door and lead her out, hoping that Eden doesn't hear Holly's footsteps as she makes a quick exit.
