Chapter 123 How Much Did You Tell Her?

“Just how much did you tell her?” Lewis shouts as he enters the room. I’m not sure who he is talking to. Perhaps his uncle?

“Lewis, shut up,” James retorts angrily as the door slams shut behind them. “You know full well that Eden Clancy is in the building. The last thing we need is for her to overhear you.”

“It’s not me that told her…”

“No. But it is you that got caught stealing intellectual property not just once but countless times. So stop shouting at Alice.”

“She told…”

“No. She didn’t. From what Alice is saying, it was actually your assistant that gave Eden the details of your indiscretion.”

“My indiscretion? It was your idea! I never even wanted this job and now thanks to you, Uncle James, I’m probably going to end up in prison.”

“Don’t be such a big baby and shut the hell up. Taking a little responsibility won’t do you any harm.”

The room falls silent and I pray to whoever might be listening that no one will come around this side of the desk.

“Alice tell me everything,” James says eventually and I hear the desk above me creek as he presumably sits on it.
“Holly gave her the notes about all the copied projects.”

“Is that definitely all?”

“All? Isn’t that more than enough?” Lewis grumbles under his breath.

“I told you to keep your trap shut before you get yourself into more trouble.”

Lewis goes quiet again but I hear a strange tapping sound and I can easily imagine him kicking the furniture in frustration like a petulant child.

“What about the Luxen account?” James asks.

I have no idea what he’s talking about but I make a mental note of it, hoping that I might hear something that will prove useful.

“I didn’t mention it,” Alice says, “and Holly doesn’t know anything about it.”

“Good. I’m not going to give up a penny of that money, not to some entitled little brat.”

Entitled little brat? I nearly get to my feet to confront him for that one sentence. It takes masses of self control to stop myself and I wind up clenching my hands into fists. I’m practically shaking with rage.

“So what now? I really don’t want to go to jail,” Lewis is moaning.

“I think it’s time for us to go our separate ways,” James replies.

“Huh?”

“Well, you’re probably going to have to pay for your crimes and I think it’s time for me to retire on a nice private beach somewhere.”

“What if she works out that you killed her parents?” Lewis retorts angrily.

I gasp in shock at Lewis’s words and have to cover my mouth with my hand to stop them hearing me.

“Oh. Don’t worry about me. I’ve done my research. I’m going somewhere that won’t extradite me even for murder.”

“Then can’t I come with you?” Lewis practically begs.

“What so you can ruin my retirement? Hell no.”

I feel my body shudder and shake from the shock of hearing them talk so callously about my parents’ murders.

“Besides, I’m pretty sure Miss Clancy is too distracted with whether or not that baboon Martin did it.”

“Don’t you want to take over the company? We could give it one last shot.”

“Kid, you’ve single-handedly destroyed this company.”

Lewis splutters in response.

“We’ll just take as much as we can and get the hell out of here.”

“What about her?”

“I’ll deal with Alice,” James answers. “You should go home Lewis.”

Alice makes a squeaky noise and I find myself wondering if she’s just as scared as I am. The door opens once again and all is quiet until it closes.

“What am I going to do with you, Alice?”

“I’m sorry, James. I didn’t know what to do. Holly was determined.” She’s rambling nervously, her voice squeaky.

“You should have come to me,” he growls at her. I hear the sound of a hand striking a cheek and then Alice whimpers.

“I could kill you.”

Oh my goodness. I need to do something. I can’t just sit here and hide while he threatens my employee! Together with Alice we could overpower him surely… I swear under my breath, wishing that I’d brought my phone with me. Then I could have recorded their conversation or called the police even.

But no… I stupidly came in here without considering all the possibilities.

“The problem is, you know too much, Alice.”

He sounds almost regretful. Not that he cares about her, there’s definitely no emotional connection between them, but his voice suggests that he thinks killing her might be wasteful. I guess she must have been a particularly good assistant.

I wait impatiently, hoping that Alice might be able to talk her way out of being killed so that I won’t have to expose myself immediately. I don’t want James to know that I’ve overheard their conversation if I can avoid it.

“Have you booked my plane yet?” James asks, changing the direction of the conversation.

It seems almost ridiculous to imagine that he’s asking the person he’s considering killing if she’s planned his escape route for him.

“Not yet. I was caught off guard when Artie…”

“Yes, of course, my dear. My nephew does have a habit of causing trouble, doesn’t he?”

Alice didn’t reply and I held my breath as we both waited for what would come next.
