Chapter 37 Working On The Weekend

In everyone’s haste to get me out of the building last night, I ended up leaving my phone at work. It’s so annoying because I’m supposed to meeting my grandma to go shopping this afternoon and without my phone, I can’t even call her to confirm.
What’s worse, without my phone I slept late so it’s already after eleven when I leave the house.
I run full pelt around the corner and down the steps to the underground. I arrive just in time to catch the tube. It’s crowded as always. It’s funny how used to this I’ve become in the last month. Four weeks ago, I’d felt claustrophobic, hating everything about the Underground. Now though, I’ve barely even noticed that the guy on my left’s elbow is digging into my arm or the person on my right is chewing obscenely loud.
Well, I might have noticed…
But I’m definitely better at not getting irritated by my fellow commuters.
Since it’s the weekend, the train is busier than normal and instead of being full of people on their way to work, it’s brimming with teenagers and families. It’s insanely loud with chatter. Luckily, I only have to stay on for five stops before I can finally escape the stifling heat of the train.
It’s only a short walk to the company from the station but I’m still super proud of myself when I manage to reach the office just before midday. At this rate, I’ll be out of here and on the way to seeing my grandma before she even realises I’ve yet to call her.
As soon as I enter the department, I hear the sound of my phone ringing.
I head towards the sound, not wanting to keep my grandma waiting but pull up short when I see Noah at my desk. He’s reaching for my phone. I panic. What if it’s my grandma? He’d recognise her voice for sure.
Running towards him, I as good as tackle him just as he answers, “hello?”
He drops the phone, stumbling slightly. He pulls me against him, trying to keep us both upright.
“Eden?” He’s completely confused and a little bit winded. “What are you doing here?”
“I left my phone,” I tell him.
I’m still in his arms, staring up at him. He’s got one hell of a face. Up close, it’s even better and I’m itching to reach out and touch it. Neither of us say anything. I hadn’t realised just how tall he is but with his arms around me, I can’t think of much else.
“I…” I stutter nervously.
He puts me back on my feet before stepping back.
“Why are you here?” I ask, my voice coming out higher than it should. “Working on the weekend.”
“Yeah,” he says, grinning broadly at me. That smile has me sucking in a breath. “Catching up on some paperwork.”
I duck down to grab my phone. “I just came to get this,” I tell him, waving it.
I should leave, I need to call my grandma to arrange our shopping date, but I don’t want to. Even if it’s just ten minutes more, I want to stay with Noah.
It’s awkward though and if I’m not going to leave, I probably need to say something.
“Do you want to grab a bite?” Noah asks before I can think of anything to say. “I’m half starved.”
“I could eat,” I say.
“Great. Let me just grab my coat.”
While I wait for Noah, I type out a quick text message to my grandma that I’ll meet her at two.
“So, what do you fancy?” Noah asks when he comes back out of his office.
‘You,’ I think to myself.
Together, we make our way out of the department, turning off the lights behind us.
“Did you have fun last night with everyone?” Noah asks, pressing the down button on the lift.
“I had a great time,” I tell him honestly. “Rob and the guys insisted that we go to a karaoke bar.”
“Oh, god,” Noah laughs, “he really can’t sing though!”
“I know, right?” I giggle. “Literally, tone death.”
“I can’t say I’m sorry I missed that performance.”
The lift doors open to reveal my grandma and Martin. My stomach drops. This is the first time I’ve seen my grandma at the company since starting here and I have no idea how to act.
“Mrs Clancy,” Noah says politely.
We step out of the lift, moving aside to let grandma in but she doesn’t move.
‘Please, don’t say anything,’ I silently beg her.
“Here on the weekend, Mr Grisham?” she asks without so much as looking at me.
“Just catching up on some paperwork,” he tells her.
Grandma and Martin get into the lift and just as the doors close, she gives me a cheeky wink.
