Chapter 44 Something I Really Shouldn't Do

Drinks had seemed like a great idea earlier. Then again I hadn’t been planning on a Monday night rager. I’d anticipated a couple of rounds at the pub and nothing more.
I’m not sure why I didn’t try and get out earlier. I should have just made some excuse about needing to feed my dog, not that I have a dog and then I wouldn’t be in the waiting room at A&E right now. I don’t even remember who recommended going to a club. It’s Monday night! Who does that? Whoever it was that suggested it is seriously at risk of losing their end of year bonus.
The only positive in this entire situation is that I’m not alone. Eden is sitting beside me, her head resting on my shoulder as she sleeps. Stacey is pacing back and forth. It’s exhausting just watching her.
“He’ll be okay, won’t he?” she asks, coming to sit down opposite us.
“It’s only a broken arm,” I reply.
“I can’t believe he did that.”
“Me neither,” I grumble, glancing at my watch. It’s three in the bloody morning and I only have about three hours before I should be getting up to go back to work.
“It was so romantic.”
Someone is clearly still drunk, I think to myself, shaking my head. I’m not completely sure what happened earlier. We’d been coming out of the club, leaving most of the team still inside with a threat that they couldn’t be late come morning.
A cyclist had come out of nowhere and almost toppled Stacey to the ground but Rob had grabbed her first, pulling her out of the way before falling flat on his face.
Finally Rob comes out with a cast on his arm. He looks ridiculously pleased with him as Stacey runs up to him, begging to know if he’s alright. I guess he got the reaction he wanted.
Turning towards the sleeping girl next to me, I whisper, “Eden, time to wake up.”
She murmurs something before burrowing herself further into my shoulder. She’s so damn cute like this.
“Time to go,” I try again, a little firmer this time.
It’s only then that she seems to register that she’s asleep on my shoulder. Darting upright, she gapes up at me, horrified.
“Rob has his cast,” I tell her. “We can go.”
Nodding her head, she gets to her feet a little unsteadily and I wrap a protective arm around her shoulder, guiding her towards the exit.
Stacey hails down a taxi, telling us that she’ll make sure Rob gets back safely. Rob smirks briefly, clearly pleased that his brief moment of playing the hero might be about to play out to his advantage. Waving them goodbye, I remind them not to be late in the morning without conviction.
Eden is unusually quiet. She’s normally pretty chatty.
“I’m so tired,” she yawns.
“You don’t have to come in so early tomorrow,” I say softly.
“What time with you be going in?” she counters.
“Same as normal.”
“Then so will I.”
“No. You don’t need to.”
“It’s my job,” she says with a shrug, before covering her mouth to yawn again.
“Fine,” I grumble. “I’ll come in at nine.”
“You’re not just saying that?” she asks, looking at me shrewdly.
“No. I’m not just saying it. Now, will you come in later?” I ask, reaching out to brush a strand of hair behind her ear.
She looks surprised by the sudden touch but she doesn’t pull away. I want to kiss her. Glancing down at her lips, I’m tempted more than I should be.
I force myself to pull away, hailing down a taxi. I ask her where she lives, doing my best to sound indifferent, as if she doesn’t affect me.
“Er…” she hesitates.
I’m not sure what’s so complicated about the question but I do my best to wait patiently. When she finally says, I tell the driver and hold the door open for her to climb into the taxi.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” I say as casually as I can.
“We could share the taxi,” she tells me.
She’s right. We could. But then I’d kiss her and that’s something I really shouldn’t do.
