Chapter 98 Murder

Noah's POV:

This is so frustrating. I should be in the hall with all the others, giving Eden my support. Glancing at my watch, I realise that the event will be well underway by now. The last thing I want to be doing right now is having some sort of secret meeting with one of the few people at Clancy's that I outright dislike.

"What do you want?" I ask when James Artie makes his way towards me.

He looks around us before speaking as if he thinks we're in some sort of a spy movie or something, making me like him even less.

"Hurry the hell up," I growl. Eden is waiting for me... well, not literally but I want to be there for her. Not to mention, I really don't trust James Artie. He's probably even more crooked than his dodgy nephew, Lewis. "What is this all about?"

"Alright..." he starts gruffly. "I emailed Eden today."

"And?" I don't understand what he's talking about. Why would he email my assistant? Unless he knows who Eden actually is...

"And I just thought she should know the truth."

"The truth about what?"

"Her parents."

I didn't expect him to mention her parents. That takes me momentarily by surprise. I was expecting him to start talking about the company accounts or something. But then, I don't know how he'd know we are looking into them... None of this makes sense, least of all how he even knows who Eden is.

"What about them?"

"I told her who killed them."

He doesn't even bat an eyelid. He's talking about murder and yet he doesn't even look a little bit emotional, the unfeeling jerk.

"What are you talking about?"

"I know who emailed you about the company finances," he says, changing the subject.

I don't know what he expects me to say. Does he want me to beg for information?

"The person who sent you the email killed Mr and Mrs Clancy," he says in a hushed voice, his tone almost mocking. "They're trying to set me up for embezzlement."

"Who is?" Does he really expect me to believe any of what he's saying?

"I told Miss Clancy," he says, "but I don't think she'll believe me."

I imagine she might not. I'm struggling to imagine that anything this man says is true.

"Who killed Eden's parents?" I ask between gritted teeth.

"Mr Clancy realised what he was up to and was going to report him to the police," James continues, completely disregarding my irritation.

"What who was doing?" I demand.

"Martin!"

I feel like the wind is knocked out of me.

"He's setting me up," James continues but I'm no longer listening.

I need to find Eden... Whether it's true or not that Martin killed her parents, the fact there's even a chance that someone could have killed them fills me with fear.

"What did Mr Clancy find out?" I ask, needing to confirm what I think I already know.

"The embezzlement," he says irritably, as if he thinks I'm stupid for having to ask.

"You're saying Martin embezzled the funds?"

"Who else?" He shrugs his shoulders. "I need to go... Anyway, I just thought you should know that you're being played."

Then he's walking away, pulling his jacket closer in, bringing his collar up as if to hide behind it. I watch him go, considering what I should do. I don't trust James. In fact, I think I'd be a fool to believe him but I can't risk that he might be right.

Eden trusts Martin. For her, he's family and that makes him dangerous. One thing James is right about is the fact that Eden won't believe Martin capable of killing her parents and that naivety puts her life at risk, if he is actually the killer.

Rushing back into the hall, I search for her. The event is over, most people making their way out of the auditorium. I search over their heads, looking for her. My heart is racing, as I almost feel panicked as if something could happen to her at any moment, even though that is seriously unlikely.

When I see her, I don't hesitate to close the distance between us with wide angry strides. She looks nervous, scared even.

"I'm sorry," she says when I reach her, taking me completely off guard. I have absolutely no idea what she's talking about.

"Sorry?"

"For not telling you," she says as the rest of our team begin to disburse.

"I don't care about that," I growl, my tone angrier than I intend.

"You sound like you care," she whispers.

I don't know what to say. I can hardly tell her right here that I'm angry about what I've just heard, rather than the fact my girlfriend has been lying to me, but equally I don't want to add to her problems.

"We need to talk," I say softer.

"Can it wait?" she asks. "I need to go to the hospital."

"What? Why?"

"Grandma..." She begins before Sally from Human Resources cuts her off, asking her to come meet someone.

I wave her off, telling her I'll take her where she needs to go whenever she's ready. This whole thing is such a mess and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do, so I'll settle for keeping Eden in my line of sight, where she's safe.
