CHAPTER THIRTY

“Your not one of those illegal people are you?” He asked narrowly.

“N-No,” I says slowly, I don’t even know what that means again I pleaded Hayley with my eyes to take over these uncomfortable questions.

“Are you sure,” He asked once more eyeing me.

“No dad she’s not its just things are complicated, if you don’t want to help me I can just go to mom’s instead,” Hayley says getting irritable.

“No, no that’s not necessary, so um,...” He paused.

“Chloe,” I say, small.

“Right, Chloe. So what brought you in to see me?” He says getting his checklist.

“I’m sick,” I says obviously.

“Yes but what of the sorts, are you puking, can’t sleep, anxiety?” He asked.

“Puking,” I stated.

“Have you been losing any weight?” Doctor Crowel questioned writing down my last answer down.

“No, but I think I have been gaining weight,” I explained and his face turned into more confusion.

“May I ask when your last period was?” Doctor Crowel looked up.

“A month ago,” I says honestly.

“When do you usually start?” He asked writing more down.

“Usually the beginning of the month,” I says thinking.

“Its the end of the month now,” He says placing down his clipboard.

“Oh, I guess it is,” I says awkwardly.

“Could there be a chance your pregnant?” He wondered.

My mind immediately went to the night on the beach, the same night Colby got shot.

“I-I don’t know,” I says finally.

“Okay how about we run through some tests and figure all of this out,” He says standing up from his stool.

“Okay,” I agreed nodding.

“Okay, I’ll be right back how about you sit upon that bed there and I’ll be right back?” He suggested and I followed his orders.

He walked out leaving the door ajar, once he was gone I took a deep breath thinking about Colby again, does Colby know I left him at the hospital all alone, what will happen if it turns out I am pregnant?

My eyes began to tear up, and then Hayley’s father came back in with three sharp objects and tube looking things.

“Alright Chloe can you roll up your sleeve a bit,” I did as I was told, he rubbed a cold, wet piece of cloth against my arm, that's when he picked up one of the sharp objects and a tube.

He took off the cap of the sharp object and held onto my arm bringing it close to the sharp object, I quickly pulled away.

“What are you doing?” I questioned enraged, there's no way I’m letting him stab me with that, that thing!

“It’s a needle, its the only way to know for sure if your pregnant or not,” The doctor explained.

I looked up at Hayley for reassurance, and she nodded to his explanation.

I took a deep breath, placing my hand in a fist and shut my eyes tight.

The pain was sharp and quick but I could feel the pressure of the needle prodding my skin, which lasted about three minutes.

“Alright I’m done,” He announced I opened my eyes to see him placing a piece of cotton and some tape on my arm, he must have noticed the look on my face because he added.

“It’s to stop the bleeding,” He threw away the garbage and got up from his stool again.

“The blood work is going to take a couple of hours, so if the two of you would like you could stay here or leave and come back,” Doctor Crowell explained picking up the tubes full of my blood.

I looked over at Hayley, this isn’t my choice.

She looks as if she didn’t want to be here anymore then I do.

“We are going to head out we will be back in two hours,” Hayley explained picking up her purse and searching through it for the car keys.

“Well if you rather you can give me your number and I can call you and tell you the results,” He trailed off with hope in his voice.

“This isn’t something that should be told over the phone,” She says starting to get annoyed.

“You’re right, you’re right,” He says now defeated.

“Okay, are you ready?” Hayley asked looking at me, I nodded in response and started to get up.

“Why won’t you give me another chance Hayley?” Doctor Crowell asked pained.

“Can we keep this visit professional please?” Hayley pleaded shifting her weight.

“If that's what you wish,” He sighed sadly.

“Okay, see you at twelve. Come on Chloe lets go,” She says heading out the door.

I jumped down off the bed and followed her back out into the hallway to the waiting room.

The silence followed us out into the car, we sat there for several minutes.

"I'm sorry," Hayley spoke breaking the silence.

"You have nothing to be sorry for, I should be thanking you for taking me to the doctor." I smiled reassuringly.

"There's just a lot of bad blood between my father and me." She trailed off.

"I have bad blood with a lot of people in this town, so don't feel bad." I sighed at the realization.

She smiled and patted my arm, and took a breath.

"Are you nervous, you know if you are pregnant?" Hayley asked slowly.

"Yes, I am," I say breathlessly, I placed a hand on my stomach.

She nodded at my answer.
"What are you going to do if you are?" She whispered I took a minute to think.

"It wouldn't be just my baby, it would be Colby's too. Its pieces of both of us, I'll protect the baby no matter what." I decided.

Hayley turned on the ignition and slowly drove out of the parking lot.

"I want ice cream," I started looking out the window.

"Ice cream?" She asked confused at my outburst.

"Yes. I mean yes please," I quickly rephrased.

"Sure," She says as we drove up the gravel road.

I watched as the trees flew by watching us get closer and closer to the main road, I suddenly felt exhausted, but I still wanted ice cream.

The blue-black asphalt crept slowly into view and we turned to the right, onto it.

I closed my eyes, feeling the sun heat up my face and reality slowly faded away.

At least before Hayley nudged me back to it telling me that we're here.

I stirred and opened my eyes, it's the same ice cream place Colby took me to, it made me smile.

We got out of the car and walked into the ice cream shop.

"So what flavor are you thinking?" Hayley asked tilting her head with her hands on her hips looking at the menu.

"I'll get chocolate cookie dough ice cream," I replied.

"I think I'll get a strawberry sundae." She says deciding.

We ordered our ice cream and waited at a table until our name was called and she went and got our desserts.

We ate slowly to make up time before we have to go back to the doctor's office.

"So, I have a personal question, " Hayley says taking a small bite of ice cream.

"Sure, what's your question?” Eating my own.

"Where did you and Colby..you know..?" She trailed off keeping her eyes on her desert.

I immediately blushed at the random question.

"Would you like to know all of what happened?" I asked now taking another bite.

She nodded silently.

"Okay well, first we went out for breakfast with his parents," I began as she gave me a look before I continued.

"-Then he took me to the park, and we got to play there for a while, after that we came here for ice cream, it was the first time I had ever been alone with him. But then he says he had a surprise for me and the surprise was to take me to your restaurant."

"-And?" She urges me to continue.

"You got him arrested," I say accusingly.

"How many times do I have to say I'm sorry?" She rolled her eyes jokingly.

"-Anyways," I began again.
