CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN
Memory:
“Look its friendly Jasper and his boyfriend!” A boy yelled across the hall, and the other boys surrounding him laughed and picked.
This had been going on for a few weeks now and even his father yelled at him for letting it go.
“Be a fucken’ man Jasper, stop letting all these pansies walk all over you.” Our father says as we sat in the back seat of his black cadillac.
So then after school the next day, Jasper snuck our dad’s golden knife to school, our fathers’ greatest possession.
Jasper hid behind the bushes as the boys were coming from soccer practice, tired but rowdy.
He waited until the boys were close enough and snuck behind the kid, drawing out the knife and holding it to the kid's throat.
Now obviously I don’t know what Jasper said to them, and the only ones that do took it to their graves, but I do know that jasper slit his throat ear to ear and when dad and I came to pick him up he was completely covered in blood, a smile so sinister plastered on his face, something I certainly will never forget, and he looked at our father and said.
“It’s been done, I did it, is this how to be a man, dad?” I shuttered just thinking about it, but anyone he came across that was gay or anything similar, he beaten and murdered without a second thought, and every one of those girls or boys our parents always made sure there’d be a cover up, and not once did jasper get caught.
“Now, when my parents were deciding on who was going to be the next leader they knew it had to be me obviously there wasn’t much thought since they kidnapped Chloe, but after that incident they were fearful that if my brother became the next leader he’d get everyone killed, or worse caught. Jasper is, and was never the type of guy to think rationally or level-headed.” I finally finished speaking, I didn’t have to look at Jason's face to know he was repulsed and sickened by the information that he had just been given.
Not that I can blame him when its your gay lover that did these horrible trecherous things he did to, surprise, surprise, to other gay people.
“How can tha-.” he stopped himself from speaking and pondered it on his own, and I stayed quiet.
“He really murdered all those people?” He mutters, I think mostly to himself.
“Can you see how the sudden change surprised me?” I question lowly, keeping my eyes on the road.
“He said he did many bad things but, I never imagined it to be ‘that’ bad.” He shook himself from the thought.
I looked at the time it was three thirty in the afternoon, and we’ve been driving at least for two hours now, but Jason on and off kept muttering to himself.
“We should call Chloe and update her of what’s going on.” I say watching the car’s move steadily in front of us.
“Alright.” He answers, pulling out his phone in a daze and punching in the numbers.
“When you get her on the phone, pass it to me because I want to talk to her.” I requested.
He nodded absent mindedly and put the phone to his ear, and I could hear the ringing from where I sat.
“Uh, hey can you put Chloe on the phone?” He waited for a reply then passed it to me and I put it to my ear.
“Hello?” Her worried voice sounded like honey in my ear and I couldn’t help but let myself be enveloped by her presence alone for a moment.
“Hello?” She said again, and I snapped myself out of my bliss to answer.
“Uh, hey.” I started slowly.
“Colby, where did you find them? Are you on your way back?” She rapidly fired every question on the top of her beautiful brunette head.
“No, but I know where they are going, but it’s going to take a few days for us to get there,so I’m calling to tell you to hang tight.” I say, as a long pause before she responds.
“Where are you going?” She asked slowly, as if she had any clue of where they’d be.
“My grandmother’s house out west.” Another long pause and her breathing hitched as if it was the one thing she was dreading, but there would be no way she’d know who Flora was, unless.
“Are you alright?” I asked, still waiting for an answer.
“Colby, you save our kids from that witch or I’ll kill the hag myself.” She warns, her voice as cold as ice yet smooth as silk.
“That’s definitely the plan. I’ll call you in a bit and keep you updated, for now I need you to relax.” I say finally placing the cigarette in between my lips and lighting it with a click.
“I’ll try.” she answers. Hesitating.
“-And Chloe?” I say feeling small.
“Yes?” She asks.
“I love you…” I whisper.
“I love you too, Colby.” She whispers back and we say our goodbyes and we hang up, I puff on the smoke and pass Jason back his phone.
