CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE
Lifting my leg and kicking down the metal door forcing it to crash into the wall behind it.
It echoed bouncing off the walls as we quickly made our way into the room, it was dark so I switched on the light, keeping my gun hoisted towards the middle of the room in case someone shoots, or tries to attack.
The room was almost silent, as I heard weeping in the far left corner of the room, a pillar in the way where I couldn’t see who was there.
“Who's there?” I say loud enough for my voice to boom in the near empty storage unit.
“Colby, you might want to see this.” Jason says standing on the other side of the pillar, I make my way over to him as I realize a red headed young woman cuffed by her ankle to a metal hook that was bolted into the wall.
She was folded in on herself on a small dirtied cot on the floor. “Hey, are you okay?”
Jason went to touch her.
“Don’t fucking touch me!” She screamed, her face red and irritated from tears a black shiner around her eye.
I walked over patting Jason on his shoulder indicating to hold back, I then kneeled in front of her, as she had no clothes on and her body looked riddled in cuts and bruises, as I got closer I noticed she was pregnant and a sick feeling made its way into my throat.
“What are you having, do you know?” She didn’t respond, I don’t have much time I have to find those babies fast.
“Fine, don’t answer, can you move farther from the wall?” She did as asked and I raised my gun.
“Hold on a minute, are you sure that's,-”Before he finished I pulled the trigger and shot the bolt that held her in place, the chain falling to the floor.
I went closer to her side. “Your safe now, I promise.”
“What makes you think I believe you?” Her voice wavered a protective hand on her big belly.
“If I wanted to kill you I would have done it already.” I replied, sighing.
Her body was shaking with fear and I could only guess she was cold and starving, throwing off my shirt and as she was beginning to judge wrongly I threw it at her. “Wear that for now.”
I cleared my throat and turned to face the door, so she could have some privacy.
“Why are you helping me?” She asked, bitterly as she pulled the shirt over her head.
“Why wouldn’t I?” I waited for her to become more decent.
“Your friends with that man right, the bigger one that always smells of cigars and whisky?” I didn’t need her to describe anymore, I knew right then she was talking about my father.
“Fuck that bastard, I’m looking to kill him myself.” I sneered.
“Okay I’m dressed. More or less.” She says and, I turned around to face her again.
“Can you stand?” I reached a hand for her to take.
“What’s going on here?” A man's voice came from the doorway and Jason and I both cocked our guns at him, it was just an employee.
He immediately out his hands up and I pulled the girl to her feet, we lowered our guns. “Do you have a car?”
“I’m sorry?” He was taken back from the question.
“Do, you, have, a car?” I slowed down my sentence making it easier for him to understand.
“Yes?” He answers still really confused.
“You need to take her to the hospital.” I say helping her walk towards the entrance.
“What are you going to do?” The girl asked.
“I already told you, I’m after the bastard myself, I’m going to make him pay.” She nodded, swallowing hard.
I walked her over to the employee and he helped steady her. “Do you want me to help you walk to the car?”
As I let her go her face went pale as fluid dripped down her legs, we all just froze.
"Did your-..." Jason questioned in shock.
"My water just broke." She confirmed then doubled over in pain.
"Shit." I muttered, knowing damn well I can get her in a matter of minutes then this guy can in the next ten.
I picked her up in a bridal style and quickly carried her out to the car.
She was heavy but I didn't want her to think she felt like a burden.
Jason opened the back door and I sat her gently in the back seat and I shut the door.
I threw Jason the keys. "Wait, what do you want me to do?"
"If Hayley found out I was driving again I'm pretty sure she would kill me, you need to drive."
He put a panicked hand through his dark hair. "That's a lot of pressure, man."
"Jason, we have no time for any of this. She needs to get to the hospital now." As if on cue the woman screamed in agony.
"Okay, okay." He was mostly talking to himself and got into the driver's seat and I got into the passenger side.
Without any other small talk he stepped on the gas forcing the wheels to spin harshly against the concrete with a squeal of burning rubber.
Back on the road swerving in and out between cars and running traffic lights we got there within five minutes we were nearly there.
The sound of the police siren behind us just forced all our faces to fall.
This isn't our car, this isn't good. He pulled over to the side of the hospital's parking lot.
After three or four minutes the officer got out of the car and slowly walked up to Jason's window, tapping it so he would scroll the window down, he did without hesitation.
"Good evening officer." Jason says confidently.
"Are you aware you were going 90 in a 60 zone?" He questioned ignoring Jason's small talk.
"Was I? You see, my girlfriend is having a baby and she's having contractions. I'm trying to get to the hospital." He lied as he placed a hand on the woman's knee for cover up.
"License and registration please." He ordered not even bothering to hear his excuses.
As if on cue she screamed in pain digging her nails into the leather seats.
That's when the officer looked up and through the window where she was doubling over.
"Alright fine, this will be a warning. If I catch you doing this again, I'm giving you a ticket." Annoyance in his voice.
"Yes, never again. Thank you sir." Jason replies trying to end the conversation.
"Congratulations to you both for a safe delivery." The officer says backing away from the car.
Jason scrolled the window back up and l t out an exhausted exhale, he drove up to the front doors, and I got out running into the hospital.
"Excuse me, nurse?" I asked the woman at the counter, she had scrubs on checking things off her clipboard.
"Yes, how may I help you?" She sounded tired must be a long day.
"There is a woman out in car and I think she's close to giving birth, she's having severe contractions." That's when she put the clipboard down and put on a fresh pair of rubber gloves.
"Where is she?" She followed me out the door and I opened the back door helping her out of the car.
Her knees buckled underneath her as the contractions are getting worse.
The nurse ran back into the hospital bringing out a wheelchair.
I helped her sit into the wheelchair and the nurse rolled her inside.
As much as I want to stay I have to go find my own babies.
