CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR
“Are you insane?” I whispered to Jason urgently in my voice.
“We gotta get rid of them.” He whispered back.
“No, keep your head down and keep your mouth shut. They'll leave, just watch.” I nodded toward the men around the corner.
Sure enough they continued to walk, a phone started going off.
“Yeah, what?” One of the boys said.
“We were just about finished our rounds.” He continued, we couldn't hear who was on the other end.
“Yeah, no sight of Colby yet.”
“What's he saying?” The other guy beside him asked.
“We gotta do another round.” The one on the phone replied.
“You gotta be joking.” the other commented.
I looked at Jason, his hand around the butt of the gun, it was like he was just itching to spill blood.
“Wait, you want us to meet you where? –Yeah alright Jasp, yeah old gas station? Okay, yeah we will meet you there.”
My blood ran cold, and I looked at Jasper's face, it looked as if the blood ran from his face, he was as pale as a ghost. Jasper, is on their side?
I could hear their footsteps fall faint in the distance. “We have to follow them, Colby.”
“We came for the twins, Jason. We don't have time for your lovers quarrel.” As soon as it left my lips I knew it wasn't the right thing to say, but we were so close to getting to the house.
“What would you do if it was Chloe?” He stared long and hard at me.
“Fuck, alright fine but any sense of unnecessary shit and we're out.” He went to walk and I pulled him back by the cuff of his shirt. “--And stay hidden.”
“Right, sorry.” He said, waiting for me to make my move.
I slowly turned the corner watching to see if anyone else was in the perimeter.
It's clear, we walk closely and quietly around the brick building.
I could see the dying lights of the gas station up ahead. The two men from before lean against the wall smoking cigarettes, but no sign of Jasper anywhere.
I turned around and noticed that Jason wasn't behind me. “Fuck.”
Jason's P.O.V
I was pulled into an alleyway and pushed against the wall knocking the air from my lungs. “What the fuck are you doing here Jason?”
“Holy shit, you are here.” At first I was relieved that it was him that grabbed me, and then I got mad. “What the fuck are you doing here's Jasper, I thought you were on our side.”
“You need to go. It's not safe here, wait…Are you with Colby?” His hand is still against my chest holding me in place.
I didn't respond, this was a trap and we fell for it. He took out his phone pressed a button and put it to his ear. “Jasper, your niece and nephew are here, and look we can take off together we don't need to stay here.” I tried to talk him out of the next action he was about to take.
“Hey, dad.” He paused, and I couldn't hear what was being said on the other line. He looked me in the eye for a moment and looked down at his shoes. “Yeah, you were right. Colby's here just like you said he would be, no I don't have eyes on him.”
Another silence before Jasper answered. “Yes I'm sure he's here, –because I got the one that came with him. Okay, yeah we are on our way.”
He pulled me through the alleyway. “Where are you taking me Jasper?”
He didn't respond. “You're really going to sell us out?”
He turned around and faced me. “You should have stayed the fuck away from here, what were you thinking, that this was going to be a stroll in the park?”
“Something like that.” I began laughing, not because it was funny but because this whole situation didn't make sense.
“Do you know how much shit you're going to be in?”
“I know the one that put me there.” I said getting really close to his face that we were millimeters away from each other.
“You can't fight us Jason, there's no winning this.” His hand lingered on my chest for a moment before going back to his prior self.
“Isn't that cute, if I remember correctly you were my prisoner not the other way around.” I didn't break eye contact, I stared into those cool brown eyes.
“Funny how fast the tables can turn, isn't it?” he says tauntingly.
Colby’s P.O.V
It was a trap, they knew we were here. “We knew you'd show up.”
The guy who spoke was a childhood friend of mine. His dad was in the Golden Knives and we were even initiated together.
“Come on, Ale, you don't want to be a part of this.” I called out to him as he threw down his cigarette, not bothering to step it out.
“Well you know Colby, sometimes we can't choose what we want to do, right?” He said walking towards me.
“You're going to put that in my face?” I questioned my hand on the butt of my gun in my waistband.
“That's what you said to my old man when you put a bullet in his head.” he replied standing in the middle of the parking lot.
“I didn't have a choice back then, Ale.” I said, standing on the opposite side.
“I guess there are no hard feelings then.” He said smug as the other guy pulled himself off the wall.
“Using my own line against me, really mature. You know I wanted nothing to do with that, Alastair didn't give me a choice. Look, I'm not here to reconcile, I'm here to get back my kids.” I replied, I held the trigger of the gun.
I didn't want to do this as much as I forgot, somehow the memory of killing his father.
It was midnight on August 7, 2012 the men held down the 30 year old, he was beaten bloody, and was nearly conscious as his son, Ale, was forced to watch as I placed the barrel of the gun against his forehead.
“For God sakes, Colby shoot the fucker already.” My father yelled behind me.
I swallowed harshly, shaking, the palms of my hands sweaty, and clumsy the first time I took a man's life with my own hands. “Dad, I don't think I can do this.”
“You are my son. Do you know what that means? It means all of this, will be yours.” He says patting me on the shoulder, leaning real close before continuing. “Take the god damn shot, or I'll make sure you'll be fucking next.”
That's when I took the shot, the echo was loud against the silence and Ales screaming, and his father Dane fell and hit the concrete with a crack.
