The message in the dark..

VIOLET

I stirred slowly, my head throbbing with a dull ache. Blinking away the remnants of sleep, I tried to make sense of my surroundings. I tried sitting up but a wave of dizziness forced me back against the pillow. Memories of the previous night began to surface: the party, the two guys, the spiked drink, and the intrusive touches that made my skin crawl

My throat was dry, and a sour taste lingered in my mouth. Mental note to self: never accept drinks from strangers especially in a party

As I struggled to piece together the events,My thoughts flickered to Ryan. I vaguely recalled him being there before I passed out. Could he be the one who brought me in?

My eyes widened with realization. I hurriedly threw off the duvet and glanced down at my body. My clothes were still on. Relief washed over me, though it was tinged with embarrassment. The thought that Ryan carried me in himself made my cheeks flush.

Ashley!

I became alarmed as I grabbed my phone. She had been with an unknown guy before I passed out, which meant I left her alone with a stranger while she was totally drunk

Fuck!

My phone was flooded with messages from her, each one more urgent than the last, asking where I was and if I was okay. My relief was palpable when I finally saw a text saying she was home. I wanted to call her, but—

“Argh!” I yelped as another headache hit me.

Yeah,I needed coffee.

I forced myself out of bed and dragged my feet to the kitchen. After making a much-needed cup of coffee, I was about to head back to my room when a familiar sight stopped me in my tracks.

OMG.

I covered my mouth in shock, I instinctively stumbled backwards, clutching my coffee cup slightly and ducked behind the couch

Evelyn. What was she doing here?

The answer was clear: Ryan had brought her in. A pang of unease twisted in my chest, but I quickly shrugged it off. It wasn’t my business, after all.

Evelyn was dressed in a blue dress and a stiletto heels attire and it was obvious she came here from the party. I watched her move towards the exit, oblivious to my presence. That was a relief; the last thing I wanted was for Evelyn to discover that I was connected to Ryan. If she knew, my life would be turned upside down.

Just as I was catching my breath, disaster struck. The coffee I was holding splashed on me. I let out a cry but quickly clamped a hand over my mouth, trying to stifle any sound that might draw her attention.

Evelyn paused and glanced back in my direction, her gaze lingering. My heart skipped a beat, and I held my breath. Please don’t see me.

After a tense moment, she finally turned back and twisted the doorknob. For once, the universe seemed to be on my side.

As the door closed behind her, I let out a shaky breath. Phew! That was close.

I rubbed my sore thigh, the result of the coffee spill, and hurried back to my bedroom.

Anger bubbled inside me. Ryan had the nerve to bring Evelyn here while he was trying hard to keep his relationship with him hidden . If Evelyn had discovered my connection with him, my entire world could have come crashing down.

I emptied down the rest of my coffee in one gulp. The caffeine eased my nerves and my heartbeat began to steady. Coffee always had a way of calming me down.

I grabbed my phone and called Ashley. She picked up after the second ring, her voice buzzing with excitement as she described how Ryan had beaten the guy who harassed me to a pulp. She explained how she used Kyle’s phone to call Ryan and how Kyle had generously given her a ride home. I couldn’t help but shake my head with a smile, realizing Ashley had already developed a crush on Kyle. Typical.

I asked if she wanted to tag along this evening to help me in grabbing some things for my mom's wedding which will take place in exactly a week's time from now and Ashley, as expected, agreed.

I ended the call after.

The realization that Ryan beat up a guy for nr triggered an unexpected smile on my face but it quickly faded when I remembered he had brought Evelyn here.

Couldn't even control his dick!

I decided to thank him for his help last night but realized I didn’t have his number. I accessed the project info and found his contact details. After a deep breath, I began drafting a message.

I started typing “Hi, thank you for last night 😊. Violet.” Just before hitting send, I reconsidered. The message felt a bit too enthusiastic, and might give him the wrong impression. deleted the smiley and revised it to, “Thanks for last night. Violet.”

I read it over and felt it came out as a curt but it was safer than the original. Satisfied, I hit send and set my phone down.

I went through my morning routine as usual—showering, dressing and having breakfast with my parents. Ryan was absent today and I wondered why. He’d probably slept in after his late night, maybe exhausted from dealing with his girlfriend. My mind cringed at the thought. Why was I even concerned about it?

After breakfast, I briefly reviewed our project details. We were tasked with writing a detailed mystery novel. I brainstormed a few ideas, jotting down notes about a plot involving a small, seemingly perfect town plagued by mysterious disappearance.

Throughout the day, I kept checking my phone, hoping for a reply from Ryan. His message had been marked as seen, but no response had followed. I rolled my eyes, frustrated.

Arrogant jerk.

Part of me had hoped for a reply, even a brief one, but clearly, that wasn’t going to happen.

Evening came, and I went out with Ashley to find the perfect dress for the wedding. We found a stunning option that fit the occasion perfectly. As much as I wanted to opt for something more comfortable, I knew disappointing Mom on her special day was not an option. Afterward, we grabbed a quick bite before I finally headed back home, utterly exhausted..

Just as I was about to settle into bed, my phone beeped. I rushed to check, hoping Ryan had finally replied, but what I saw made my heart stop. I stared at the screen, unable to process the words. My breath hitched and the phone slipped from my hand hitting the floor with a soft thud.
The message was from an anonymous number:

“Keep enjoying yourself while you can, Violet. This won’t last forever. Soon, everything you hold dear will be ripped away. Don’t get too comfortable—your little escape is about to end”
