Going home with Jack.
VIOLET
I was mad.
No, scratch that—I was furious. My hands were shaking in my lap as I stared out the window, watching the trees blur into nothingness under the dim glow of the streetlights
Ryan dragged me to this stupid party and told me to "mingle," like I was supposed to feel comfortable around a bunch of strangers I didn’t even know. And then what did he do? He disappeared. Left me alone in a sea of unfamiliar faces while he went off... God knows where
I wasn’t exactly the social butterfly, and he knew that. So why the hell would he abandon me like that? The question that topped everything was why did he invite me??
I glanced over at the driver's seat. Jack had stepped out of the car a few minutes ago, excusing himself to take a phone call. His conversation was too far away for me to hear, but it didn’t matter.I was just glad to be out of that party
Soon enough,he was back. Jack slid back into the driver's seat, shutting the door with a soft thud.
“Sorry for the delay” He said with a smile before turning the engine on. I mustered a nod before flickering my gaze back to the window.
“Let’s start again. Ryan interrupted us earlier “he said. “I’m Jack You must be that Ryan's pretty stepsister”
I felt a heat rise up to my cheeks. It's weird to hear a guy call me pretty. I'm not someone who gets talked to by a guy a lot.
“It's nice to fully know you Jack” I mustered a small smile hoping I'm not ruining anything.
“A quick question though. Do you have something going on with Ryan?”
He asked with a smug grin and I almost choked on laughter. “N-No why'd you think that? Absolutely not”
He narrowed his eyes at me before fixing them back on the road. “Alright, it's crazy how protective he is over you”
“Protectie?” The question tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop it. Jack nodded
I scoffed. If he really was protective,he wouldn't have left me out there in the middle of a party.
"You don't have to believe me if you don't want to, but I've never seen Ryan act like this... Intense over a girl." He said. “I mean, the guy practically went ballistic when he thought you were missing tonight”
I didn't know why but I felt flutters in my tummy. It didn't occur to me that he'd come searching for me and I should have dropped a text at least. I checked my phone and realized it was dead. Way to go.
I raised an eyebrow, still staring out the window.
"Ballistic? Really? Funny, because he didn’t seem to care much when he left me alone at that party”
Jack sighed. “Look, I get it. I’d be pissed too if I were you. But Ryan... he’s complicated. Doesn’t always make the best choices. Hell, he screws up a lot more than he gets it right. But when it comes to you? I think he’s trying, even if it doesn’t seem like it.”
More butterflies. When it comes to you,I think he's trying
Something fluttered in my chest at his words
"Why are you being so nice to me?" I asked after a moment, glancing over at Jack.
"I mean, you don’t even know me."Jack shrugged, a playful grin tugging at the corner of his lips. "Maybe I just have a soft spot for girls who get left behind at parties”
I let out a small chuckle.
“So,do you have a boyfriend?” Jack asked, his eyes smoldering.
“No” I replied, shooting him a sideways glance. I clearly knew what he was getting at. “If you're trying to be subtle here, you're failing miserably”
“Right” he muttered with a small cackle. “I'm really not good at this but I do have some other strong points. Go out with me some other night and I'll show you them” He arched his eyebrow for a response and I laughed awkwardly, unsure how to respond.
I wasn’t exactly experienced in this whole getting-asked-out-by-a-guy thing and I seriously wished Ashley was here to help me out
“Maybe” I simply muttered.
“Alright. Maybe works for me. I can deal with that”
Jack pulled out a cigarette from his car..and offered one to me. “You want?”
“No” I shook my head. “I'm good”
Jake lit his and exhaled a puff of smoke making me cough slightly. It's nothing, I was used to this already.
“You're missing out”
“On lung cancer? Good” I replied
He stopped smoking to glance at me with a defeated smile. “You're right”
And the rest of the ride dragged on in silence.
“Thanks for taking me home from that stupid party” I said once he pulled up at my house.
“It's fine. Can I get your number so I can take you out sometimes? I won't give you a cigarette I promise” He gave me a playful smile which I returned.
“Well, you took me home. So I guess I can”
His face lit up and immediately handed me his phone. I entered my number and gave it back.
“Can I call later to confirm it's not fake.” He asked again and I smiled.
He's a real flirt.
“Of course. Goodnight Jack” I replied
“Goodnight Violet” He called after me as I made my way to the house.
As I made my way toward the house, the sinking feeling in my chest deepened when I noticed Ryan’s car parked in the driveway.
I should be mad at him. He left me alone at the party, disappearing without so much as a word. I had every right to be furious.
I turned the doorknob and stepped inside, letting the door softly click shut behind me. The house was dimly lit and quiet. I took a deep breath, hoping to slip upstairs unnoticed.
But then, a voice stopped me cold.
“I see you’ve had a good time flirting with my friend.”
