The rescue mission

RYAN

The plan was in motion and every nerve in my body thrummed with adrenaline.

The evening air was cold, biting through my jacket as I crouched in the underbrush, my eyes fixed on the old, deserted warehouse ahead. Every nerve in my body was on edge, coiled tight like a spring ready to snap. Jack checked his surveillance gear, the faint glow from his device lighting up his face in the darkness

The plan was simple - Lisa and my father would deliver the ransom to the drop-off location as instructed while we took on the kidnapper together with the cops.

"Ready to burn out your anger," Jack asked, his voice filled with excitement. Of course, this jerk would love every idea of giving an endless punch. I nodded, exchanging a glance as a silent understanding passing between us. We had one shot at this, and we couldn’t afford to screw it up.

Dad called minutes ago to tell me they're already on their way to the drop-off location. They had no idea we were here, no idea we were planning on taking down this bastard ourselves. I intended to keep it that way.

Once we were clear, Jack gave the signal, a quick nod, and we moved out of the shadows, the officers trailing us in near silence. Our footsteps let out a soft thud on the floor but my heart was pounding so hard I was sure the whole damn city could hear it. The thought that Violet might be hurt twisted something in my chest but I shrugged it off. I wasn’t just here to make a rescue. I was here to finish this.

As we approached the rear entrance of the building, Jack held up a hand, scanning for any signs of security. “Simple alarm system,” he murmured, his fingers swiping relentlessly over his device. I could only watch, my hands clenched beside me itching to get inside.

Finally, he nodded. “We’re good.”

We slipped into the building, the air hung with the musty scent of old wood and stale smoke. The dim light barely reached the narrow hallway, but we didn’t need much to find our way.

The room was silent, there was no sign of life and for some seconds,it dawned on me that we might have followed the wrong lead.

What if it wasn't his car? Or what if the car just happened to be in this location and he held Violet captive elsewhere?

I raked a hand through my hair struggling to keep my sanity in check.

We scrambled through all the rooms but there was nothing.

“Nothing yet?” Grant, the head of the cops asked and I shook my head. This was all for nothing.

Just as we were about to leave, I heard it—a faint voice, muffled but unmistakable. It was Violet, pleading softly, her words broken and strained. My blood turned to ice, then to fire. I turned to Jack, the look in his eyes telling me he heard it too.

We followed the sound, edging down the hallway, and found ourselves standing before a plain, empty section of the floor. There was no door, no obvious opening—just silence. But then, something caught my eye. A small, scuffed patch on the floorboards, as if someone had dragged something heavy across it. I crouched down, brushing my fingers over the wood. It was loose. I pried at it, feeling it shift under my grip.

“Help me with this,” I whispered to Jack. Together, we pulled back the loose floorboards, and beneath them, a trapdoor came into view, hidden beneath a layer of dust and grime. My heart raced as I pulled it open, revealing a narrow set of stairs leading down into darkness. A stale, damp smell wafted up from below, mixed with the faint sounds of Violet’s soft whimpers.

He really is smart. I'll give him that.

“Stay close,” I muttered, glancing back at Jack as I descended the stairs. The dim light barely reached the bottom, but I could make out a small, concrete room at the end of the passage, with a faint light leaking through a crack in the far wall.

Jack positioned himself on one side of the door, signaling to the officers to cover the exits. With a quick nod, I kicked the door open, the wood cracked under the force.

The bastard whipped around, his eyes wide with shock, his hands frozen mid-motion. We locked eyes, and I saw the recognition, the brief flicker of fear, before he tried to mask it.

There, in the corner, I saw her—Violet, tied to a chair, her face pale, eyes wide with fear. She looked up, and when she saw me, a spark of recognition crossed her face.

“Put your hands up!” one of the officers shouted, stepping in behind us, weapon drawn. The kidnapper smirked, his hands rising slowly, a twisted smile on his face as he watched me.

“Ahh Ryan Jenkins. You found me” he sneered, his voice dripping with contempt. He looked me up and down, taunting me with that smug expression. “Guess you’re not as useless as I thought.”

I clenched my fists, feeling the anger rise inside me. “You thought you could get away with this? Taking my sister? Threatening my family?” I took a step forward, my gaze locked on him.

He chuckled, barely fazed. “I’ve always been a step ahead of them. They are always too slow to keep up”

That was it. I couldn’t hold back any longer. I lunged forward, my fist connecting with his jaw, sending him stumbling back.

The officers shouted for me to stop, but I barely heard them. I hit him again, the rage boiling over as I landed another punch. He grunted, losing his balance, but that smug smile never left his face.

“You bastard” I growled as I sent my fist through his jaw again,

“Ryan, that’s enough!” Grant stepped in, gripping my shoulder as he pulled me back.

“You might end up killing him. Let's handle it”

I took a shaky breath, my fists still clenched as I forced myself to step back, The bastard wiped a trickle of blood from his mouth, looking up at me with that same twisted smile.

“Don’t worry, Jenkins,” he said, his tone mocking. “This isn’t over.”

I glared at him, swallowing the anger that still burned inside me. “Yeah, it is. Because you’re done. You’ll never touch her again”

The officers moved in, cuffing him and leading him away. I stood there, watching until they’d taken him out of sight, a sense of relief finally settling over me.

“Ryan” She looked up at me, her eyes clouded with fear, and for a moment, I just held her, feeling the tremble in her shoulders as she clung to me. My heart ached, but I didn’t let go. Not yet.

“Ryan” A soft voice called from behind me. I turned to see Violet, her eyes reddened, a faint smile plastered on her face as she stepped toward me. Before I could say a word, she threw her arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug. I stiffened as she clung tightly around me,my heart pounding against my chest but I didn't let go. Not yet. Not ever.
