Chapter forty-eight
Jasmine was the first lady I loved. I was in high school then, with Michael.
"It's not_," he started again but I cut him off.
"You knew I loves her and you went ahead to have sex with her? And you dare give me stupid philosophy!"I scream at him, upset at myself for not bashing his face already. He's so bold. Imagine he's saying all this bullshit in my office.
He looks away, "I know you are angry. And you e. That's why I'm here," he stands up quickly and moves to my side. He moves the chair so that I'm looking up at him. He bent his head towards mine, "Hit me".
What? I scoff again. What's he doing?
"Hit me if that will make you listen to me".
I laugh.
Fine! If that's what you want.
I got up and hit him across the face.
My punch gave him a slight cut at his mouth. He cleans it and turns to me again, "You can do more if it will clear your head"
I punch him again and he drops to the ground.
He staggers up and looks at me again. I can see the cut has gotten deeper.
"Go ahead," he eggs me on with the movement of his hand.
I squeeze my face, "Are you here so I can beat you to a pulp?"
He laughs, "Of course. I had avoided it all these years but I know I was at fault. Even though it wasn't intentional, yet I knew I had a hand in it. Yes! I came here hoping you will punch me even harder than this. Guess what, I'm disappointed. You are not half as strong as you used to be."
What! I move closer to him angrily.
" Say that again and I will damage what's left of your handsome face," I scream at him.
" If it will let you listen to me. If you will only hear my of the story and stop blaming me"
My head did a flip.
" What more do you want to tell me!"I yell at him," How you have sex with her?" I was covered by my flame of rage.
" Yes, I did. I had sex with her. And you won't stop hating me for this".
"I don't want to hear anything from you, "I say and turn away, walking back to my seat.
" I never knew you loved Jasmine to date her!"Michael screamed after me," I told you about her. I wanted to tell you she was making an advance on me but you were not always available to hear me! How was that my fault!" he screamed.
I turn to look at him. What! What's he saying?
"What are you talking about?"
He looks at me now, "Do you remember the day I told you I had something to tell you but you told me you would listen to me after you are back from the three days trip?"
My head did a bang.
I remember that day. I remember him telling me something like that. I got some information about one of my father's daughters. She wanted to see me and I didn't want Michael to know I had a step-sister just yet. My dad was familiar with ladies and had lots of mistresses. So, I went off but the trip lasted for a week. When I got back was when I met Jasmine and Michael having sex.
Wait! I don't want to believe this.
"Yes," Michael's voice brought me out of my thought, "You didn't give me the opportunity. And you only told me you liked her. Almost all the guys in our school liked her. I didn't know you planned to ask her out. But I'm sorry," he looks away now," I should have stopped her. I could have but I was so lost. I suffered for it. For more than ten years, I lost a friend and a brother. Something I was unable to get back".
What!
I couldn't think for a moment
It was like my brain stopped for a moment.
I look at Michael again, at the injuries I caused.
I'm not getting this.
No, wait! Like does it mean I am hating someone for an offense he didn't even commit?
"Is this true?" I couldn't even move an inch. I feel myself tremble.
Michael looks up at me now, with so much emotion written all over his face. I can't remember the last time I've seen him look like that, "I'm saying nothing but the truth. That was why I tried to take everything that's yours. Perhaps, we would get the chance to talk. But it seemed like you only hated me the more. I couldn't help it sometimes too so I end up losing tolerance."
It seemed like the world stopped moving for a moment.
" I know you wanted to take things and people precious to me too because of it. I thought that was the case with Betty too but she told me the truth about it. I couldn't stop feeling more guilty."
OMG! I can't believe all this.
" Even Jones. I intentionally rescued her when I saw what you were out to put an innocent girl into. That wasn't you Dave, all I wanted was to have my old Dave back," his voice shrunk to near a whisper," I've missed him".
I've missed him too, my inner voice replayed
Without a second thought, I move nearer and pull him into a bear hug.
" I didn't know, I didn't know that was the case," even my voice shakes. Amazingly, I'm feeling this way.
It just seems like all our wonderful memories were back in my head. It seemed like it happened yesterday. Gosh, I don't believe I've missed all these. I tried so hard to admit it, I tried to regret those moments but they were always alive inside me.
I pull back after a while, "I'm so sorry Mer," I smile, calling him by the nickname I gave him. He goes by Mer while I bear Lin. The combination is the name of a powerful old sorcerer that we both read in a book.
He smiles too and traces the tip of my face, "You've gotten more handsome than I am".
I laugh and he joins in.
I sigh and look at the cut again. He was right. I should have listened to him before jumping to a conclusion.
"So, are you back with Betty?" I ask and lead him to the sofa.
He sits now, "Yes, we are. And I hope you guys can still stay as friends".
Well, I had lost all hopes about being friends with her. All I was concerned with was getting Jones. And the fact that I still haven't is giving me a great headache.
"How about we sign a real contract? Your company and mine?"
I smile again, "Dad would be so glad, "I think for a while," How about we all go out to catch up on old times?"
His face brightened up," I will love that. You need to me what you've been planning all your life".
I laugh again. I feel alive all of a sudden.
" You should go treat your injuries".
He nods once and gets up," I even have an appointment to catch. I will call you when I'm free to."
I stand too," Deal?" I stretch my hand out to him.
"Deal," he says and takes my hand. With it, he pulls me into another hug, "Deal Lin".
He pulls back after a while, "I want to tell you something else. It's about Jones. She wants to come back to my office. I think she's super upset"
What am I going to do to make her stay for Christ's sake? When will she even like me?
"You love her, don't you?" Michael's question forces me to look up at him. I sigh and nod slowly.
" That was why I planned to make you leave her"
He chuckles slightly," Jones doesn't love me but there's a chance she does love you. How about we do it like this? Let her come back to my office and you can visit her anytime you want".
" That doesn't even make sense, "I scream at him.
He laugh again," Have you forgotten that everything with girls doesn't make sense at first. You don't force girls to like you. You let them know you like them," he made a slight salute before walking out of the office.
I can't believe I've reconciled with Michael.
I feel so good. I've never been so good in years.
And I'm happy for Betty. I never knew I misunderstood Michael all this while.
Now, I feel so bad for punching him.
He's right about Jones. I guess there is no barrier to love. And I shouldn't be making her feel like she doesn't belong anywhere. I should tell her my mind.
I'm so happy for today. Maybe I should go and complete my pedicure section.
I need to call Betty too.
I pick my phone and dial Betty's line. She picks up immediately.
It seems like my life has just started.
Jones
I pick two wristwatches and rush to Nancy, "They both look good. Which one should I take?"
Nancy shakes her head at me, "Are you going to continue doing this? It's been three days already. Are you not going to work ever again?"
" I will soon, Nancy. Michael promised me, "I smile and walk back to the watch section," I will stay at home till he calls me back. And I'm positive he will."
I wonder what Dave is doing by the way.
" Go and find out then, if you are so curious," Nancy says beside me suddenly.
I turn to look at her, "What are you saying?"
"You just wonder what Dave is doing and I gave you an easy solution".
What! I can't believe I thought that aloud.
The ringing of my phone allowed me to get out of the weird situation. I rush off towards my phone. It's Michael that's calling. I picked it up immediately.
"Hi Michael"
"Hi dear, how are you this morning?".
I smile and watch Nancy walk away," I'm fine".
" Are you still going to keep staying at home?"
"I thought you promised me. Are you going to back down now?"
He laughs shortly," Good news baby girl. I'm calling you back to where you love. You can resume as my assistant tomorrow"
What!
I scream in joy.
Nancy looks at me from afar and I smile at her.
" Thanks so much, Michael!"
I can't believe I will be working for Michael from tomorrow henceforth. It feels so good.
I feel so happy this morning. I am resuming work at Michael's company today. I feel so elated.
I dress up in peach suit trousers with heels.
I look cool. I smile at myself in the mirror before walking out of the room.
Nancy is waiting for me outside. She has a car now and she's going to drive me to work before going to hers.
I've missed everyone at Mercury light, especially Elizabeth.
"This one that you are looking beautiful. Have you forgotten Michael has a girlfriend now?"
I shake my head at her weird words," I am aware of that and I'm totally fine by it. And I want to see Betty too. I'm her lover's friend after all, "I say and walk out.
She laughs too before she joins me outside.
Betty said something that day. She said Dave had to go the acting length to make Michael know exactly the mistake he's making. Why would Dave do something like that? For all I know, Dave hates Michael.
And why did he hate him to start with?
I need to speak to Betty about it, seriously.
"Are you getting down or would you rather follow me to my shop?" Nancy asks and laughs.
I look around me and discover that we are in front of Mercury light.
