Chapter 30

“I am going to break up with him.” I told MC when she came over to visit.
“What” she asked in a high pitched tone out of disbelief.
“MC I am suffering at work in a way he can’t even imagine.  No one can say a thing about him. Everyone has their focus on me. Lucy Chaw has been busy spreading rumors about me. It is hard to work in that kind of environment.”
“Don’t jump in to this decision without considering about his feelings as well.” MC warned me.
“You don’t get it. Every day I hear someone say something about me and I blame Shawn. I would always think to myself if I hadn’t met him in that elevator I would have been able to work peacefully. Not only am I hating my job’ but I am actually starting to despise him as well. When I told him I was sick he was really worried, he kept calling me over and over and I really love him for it. But if things at work don’t get better I am scared I would actually start to hate him. So before that happens I need to let him go.”
MC looked at me for a while and said “That is some complicated shit. But if it makes you feel better I would have you know that things are going great between Chris and me.”
I looked at her in disbelief “Why would you always do that?”
“Do what” she asked.
“Always brag about your great relationship when I am telling you about my crises.”
She gave me an answer “That is my duty as your best friend sweetie.”
So I decided that the next chance I get with Shawn I am going to end things. The next few days I didn’t even get to see a glimpse of Shawn. He must have been really busy. And in those days, my mom and MC tried to convince me not to break up with him but my mind was already made up.
On Friday I finally saw Shawn but it wasn’t in private. It was in a meeting. After the meeting was over he called me by my office number and asked me to go to the parking lot saying that it was very important. When I rushed over there he shoved me in to the passenger seat and closed the door. He ran over and sat at the driver’s seat and drove off.
“Where are we going?” I asked him worried about how he shoved me in to his car and drove off in a hurry.
He sighed and in a serious face he said “I am kidnapping you.” then he cracked up.
“What”? I asked not knowing what this was all about.
“I am taking you out.” he proudly said.
“Shawn, I don’t get off work just yet. Turn the car around.” I told him in a serious tone.
“Come on, its Saturday no one will scold you for missing Saturday. Plus even if they want to they can’t because you are my girl.”
The joke he made did not make me feel better. He still didn’t know how things worked. No one would say anything to him because he was the boss but everyone will be ready to make up new rumors that wouldn’t reach the ears of Shawn Davis.
I gave him a small smile as to say ‘sure’.
All of a sudden he stopped the car and said that he was feeling like getting some coffee so he parked the car and went out to get us drinks. As soon as he got out I made a 911 call to MC. I told her the situation as soon as she picked the phone up and told her that today was the day that I was going to break up with Shawn.
“Any pointer” I asked her.
“Just don’t make it too long. If you keep on blabbing it will be worse for the person who is getting dumped. Just reap the bandage off real quick to ease the pain. And no matter what you do don’t ever say ‘It’s not you, it’s me’ do you really have to do this?” she threw in a question after she was done with the pointers.
“I already told you I have to.” I answered to her and hanged up the phone when I spotted Shawn from a distance. He opened the door and hopped in. He got himself coffee and an early tea for me. He started the car and drove off.
He took me to the amusement park. It was still early when we arrived there. I was already there so I decided to make the best of it. We had a blast.
We started with games. Bunch of people were having a competition for a prize by shooting cans off the stand from a certain distance. Both Shawn and I entered our names. While Shawn failed after three rounds, I used my video game skills to reach the final game. The distance between us and the cans increased.
The only peoples with fake guns in our hands were me and this other kid that was round and half my height. I was planning to lose for the kid because he was so cute until he opened his mouth and started talking trash.
The kid stepped forward with the gun in his right hand. He stopped at where he was supposed to stand and turned to look at me. I was standing next to Shawn. The kid had confidence in his looks. As soon as we locked eyes the kid narrowed his eyes and said “First prize is already mine.” then he twisted his neck to the side and spat close to my feet.
I dropped my jaw at the sight of the giant spit that almost flooded my shoes. The boy turned to his target. There were five cans and he had five shots. The kid shot the first four cans and missed the last one. Considering the distance he was shooting at, people got impressed. The kid looked at me and gave me an evil smirk and said “Beat that.”
I was going to me mature enough to lose to a kid on purpose. But his smirk fired me up. The kid had no idea who he was up against. I took off my jacket and gave it to Shawn. With my eyes still on the kid, I took my place. I looked at my target and smiled ‘Piece of cake’.
I shoot the first four can without a problem. I became so immature and took the game so seriously that I looked at the kid before shooting that last can and gave him the same evil smirk he gave me earlier. I turned back to my target and focused on it. It was placed further away from the rest of the cans so it was not easy. I took my time to try and focus on the target. The entire place was quite. People in or out of the competition were paying full attention to the game. Everybody there had their eyes on the can waiting in anticipation to see if I could knock it over. I took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. I saw the can flip and fall off the stand and on to the ground. The silent tension was broken by the scream of the crowd. Everybody went wild except the kid. The once confident kid was now sad and had tears in his eyes.
I won the first prize and got the hundred dollar gift card while second place got a giant pink teddy bear. The kid looked at the teddy bear and cried. It was obvious that the prize he was looking for was the gift card and not the bear.
After I accepted my prize I walked over to the kid and stood over him. He looked up at me. At this angle he looked way younger that the time he smirked and spat at my feet. He looked at the gift card in my hand and cried even harder.
“Hey” I said to him hoping he would stop crying “That was a pretty good game.”
He stopped crying but he still had his lower lip touching his chin out of disappointment.
“How about this” I continued “Since that was a close game, I will trade my gift card for your teddy bear.”
As soon as I said that: the kid looked up in excitement and said “No backsis” and tossed me the bear. I gave him the gift card and watched him go brag to his friends that he won first prize.
“That was impressive. And a little scary.” said Shawn in a sarcastic tone.
“The kid challenged me. What can I do?” I answered.
“I better stay on your right side because you are terrifying when you had a gun in your hand.” he joked.
“You better” I said by opening my eyes real wide as to be scary. I handed him the giant pink teddy bear.
“What do you want me to do with her?” he asked hugging the bear with his entire arms.
“I won it for you. You were doing terrible at the game I figured that you needed to have a reminder of it.”
“Well if that is so, then I shall cherish it until I die.” he joked and took the bears’ left hand and made it salute to me.
