Chapter 26: The Romantic Garden

“Why would he lie about our relationship?"

Jenny frowned while Avery turned her gaze to the man beside Jenny. He looked young and average, just like how the wealthy men described him. He was wearing a simple suit and his hair was a bit messy. He didn’t give a vibe of someone who would be successful in the future but he looked kind.

“Why are you looking at my man!” Jenny suddenly commented as she noticed Avery’s attention to the stranger. She held the hand of her date. Avery then smiled at Jenny. “I was just surprised at your sudden… downgrade.”

Jenny frowned and crossed her arms. It was very obvious that she would lose her cool at any moment. “Don’t you think I know who you are? You’re also a nobody. Don’t act as if you belong here. You’re a downgrade as well.”

Avery then started walking to her, making Jenny took a step back. When Avery was near Jenny, she moved closer to her ear. “I don’t think you’ve done your research properly. You might’ve missed that I dated men who are far richer than your father. Maybe after Carson, I can have your dad next. What do you think?”

Jenny’s eyes widen. She turned to Avery who moved away with a satisfied smirk on her face. “How dare you!” Her voice was a bit loud, making others turn to them. Avery’s aura changed to a victim. She looked at Jenny with worried eyes.

“Oh, I’m sorry. But I didn’t take Carson away from you. Please stop going after him and using this poor man as revenge.” Her voice was loud enough for other people to hear their conversation.

With just a few exchanges, the guests started whispering to each other while Jenny turned to them. “That is not true! This woman is lying! She’s a homewrecker!! She’s a cheap woman!”

Avery was about to comment on something when Jenny grabbed one glass of wine from the waiter and poured it on Avery’s dress. There were gasps heard around the room and by now everyone’s attention was on them.

Jenny’s boyfriend stopped her from making another bold move while the young millionaire frowned at Avery.
Avery lightly smiled, “who’s acting cheap now?”

“What did you say?!”

From afar, Avery saw Ji smirking at what was happening. He was pleased and she didn’t know if that was a good thing or not. But Avery couldn’t lose to this girl so she had to win the crowd’s favor.

Before Avery can make another comment, Carson covered her with his blazer. “Please Jenny. Do not embarrass yourself.”

“Everyone, let’s head to the dining area.” The President took everyone’s attention. Some started walking away while some continued to stare at what happened. Jenny and her boyfriend then left but Avery knew that the little girl would come back at her someday.

Carson took a deep breath and looked at Avery, “Are you alright? I’m sorry this happened.” Avery smiled at him. “I’m fine. I can handle myself perfectly.” He then looked at her dress, “We need to get you changed.”

The two of them decide to go to the back of the mansion. There was a beautiful garden with small lanterns providing as lights. Each lantern came with unique colors and shapes. There was a huge tree by the middle and around it were bushes and flowers. There were also benches around and other decors.

Avery’s eyes widen at the view in front of her. There were only two guards by the door. Carson just nodded at them and the guards decided to leave the two. Carson led her to one of the benches near the huge tree.

Now that she was in the middle of the garden, she could smell the flowers better and she wondered how they maintained the beauty of the place. When she sat, she looked at the blazer on her body. It smelled a lot like Carson. She turned to him who was busy with his phone.

After a couple of minutes, he sat beside her. “I already called someone to give you a new dress.” He then got a handkerchief and tried to wipe some of the wine stains on the dress.

Avery held his hand to stop him, surprising him. He turned to her in curiosity. “Why are you giving me a hard time?”

He raised his eyebrow as he didn’t understand what she meant. Avery looked away. She knew she didn’t have to say that. The atmosphere of the garden was romantic and magical that she lost her control. Carson looked at her from head to toe. She was stunning.

He held her chin to make her look at him. His facial expression was suddenly soft. It was nothing like a while ago or the day before in the office. He was full of mysteries and Avery couldn’t read him at all.

He continued to analyze her face, making her frown. “What’s wrong?” He shaked his head as he started to lean closer to her. She didn’t know why but she could feel her heart beat faster. She closed her fists as she waited for him to get his face closer to her.

The moment was perfect for a kiss. The wind was not that cold and not that hot. There was no one nearby. The silence was not deafening. The lights were not too much. He then placed his free hand on her lap as he leaned even more. As he was becoming near, she slowly closed her eyes.

But instead of going for her lips, he moved closer to her ear to whisper something. “I know what you are planning, Avery. I am not that dumb.”

Her eyes widen immediately as he moved away. His tone was different from all their conversations. He was already standing as he looked at his phone. He seemed to be waiting for the arrival of the dress. Avery couldn’t speak. She didn’t know what to say.
