Chapter 40: She Moved On
Avery was surprised by the sudden confession. She did not expect it at all. She never thought that Carson would say those words, especially not during sex. The quietness in the room made him uneasy. He was about to get off her when she pulled him into a kiss.
She didn’t care if they were starting to fall for each other. She didn’t care if things would be rocky tomorrow. She didn’t care if she wouldn’t end up with him because tonight, the only thing that matters were the both of them.
When Avery opened her eyes, it was already morning. The light coming from the window woke her up and she realized she was sleeping beside Carson. He was sleeping soundly with his hair on his face. She couldn’t help but smile at the sight in front of her.
Avery wanted to cup his face but she was afraid that he would wake up. She didn’t want him to see him when he woke up. It was her sacrifice for accepting his confession last night. She slowly moved her body away from his chest. She took careful steps as she dressed herself.
As she wore her romper, he moved a bit. She rushed dressing up and before leaving, she took one last look at him. In the end, she did got what she planned to do. But she couldn’t enjoy the fruit of her labor as thing were already messy.
She walked out of the hotel with a goal in her mind: move on and do her mission. Now that she met the prestigious men in the country, it would be easier for her to find a next target. When she rode the cab, she started looking for ways to contact them, hoping someone would be willing to have a nice dinner with her.
“You’re late” Jane commented as she crossed her arms. Avery mentally face palmed herself as she totally forgot about it. “I’m here now. Isn’t that what’s important?” Jane raised her eyebrow, “But today is a special day! You will meet Brix!”
Avery smiled, Brix was the next person Jane dated after the hospital incident. As if on cue, a tall muscular guy entered the room. He had a warm smile on his face that made him friendly. The guy wore a v-neck shirt that showed his well-built body. He had the vibes of a rich intellectual man that most girls would like, except Jane.
He kissed her forehead as he approached Jane. She smiled, it wasn’t the smile she had whenever she meet her asshole exes. The smile was different this time and Avery was glad that Jane found someone worth it.
“It’s nice to finally meet you” Brix extended his hand and Avery gladly took it. “Nice to meet you. I hope you won’t hurt my bestfriend.” Avery joked but she meant it. She was tired of seeing Jane become miserable with the wrong men.
“Don’t think you’re off the hook, young lady. Where were you?” Jane asked as they sat on the sofa. “Just out.”
Brix then joined the conversation. “You’re dating Carson Lee, right?” Jane clapped in excitement as she heard the question. It felt like they planned this all along. Avery just smiled, “No we’re not.”
Jane turned to her boyfriend, “I bet she was with him last night.” Avery instantly looked away but instead of being excited about it, she felt sad. Brix smiled at Avery, “You guys make a great couple.”
Jane nodded, “Avery changed when she started going out with Carson.” Avery cleared her throat. “Chill guys, it’s not gonna happen. It’s all done now. I will meet a new guy tomorrow.”
Jane’s smile faded. She pulled Avery to the kitchen so that Brix won’t hear them talking. “What? Everyone is aware that the two of you are dating. Are you cheating?” Avery held her friend’s shoulders. “Everything was fake. They used me for their company.”
The look on Jane’s face was full of disappointment. She couldn’t believe it. “But, I saw the way he looked at you.” Avery didn’t respond. Jane shouldn’t know what happened that night so it would be easy for Avery to push through with her original plan.
Avery wanted to distract herself for what’s about to happen tomorrow. After a couple more chit chats, Brix left the two as he had work to do. Jane looked at Avery who was busy watching. “Will you tell me what happened?”
Avery just laughed as she laid on Jane’s legs. “Nothing happened, babe. Just life.” Jane rolled her eyes. “You broke the deal.” Avery frowned, “No. I allowed them to announce to people that we are going out together.”
“Exactly. So why are you meeting other men? Carson is the best choice for you.” Jane was persistent and Avery knew sooner or later, her bestfriend would know the truth. “You know I get bored when I get what I want.”
“Is he that boring?”
“Totally”
Jane nodded, which Avery understood would end their conversation. Just then, her phone beeped. She saw that the notification came from Carson. She immediately hid the message. But her heart was beating so fast. She left him without a word. He might be worried about her.
Avery shaked her head to keep her cool. The moment she left the room, she also left Carson and their possibilities.
That night, Avery focused all her energy to her date. She didn’t expect that this rich man would go out with her. But Avery didn’t mind. As long as someone was willing and he passed her qualifications, she didn’t mind.
The next day, Avery prepared for her date. She colored her hair into red and wore something different from usual. Instead of tight clothes, she focused on a balloon dress. It was a white off-shoulder that showed her collar bones.
As she walked to the restaurant that afternoon, she felt different. Like she was a new person. She paused when she saw her date.
“You look different from the last time I saw you.”
