Chapter 43: Her Goodbye

Avery moved her body closer to the wall. It’s wasn’t like she was afraid but she was worried that the elevator would have another malfunction. On the other hand, Carson stood still as he pressed the button.

“We’re stuck” He commented as if it wasn’t the most obvious thing to say. He then saw a light coming from Avery’s side as she opened the flashlight of her phone.
“I’m sure they already noticed what happened. We can just wait for them to come.” She replied. Her tone was confident and calm.

He sighed and decided to sit by the corner. The area suddenly became cold and he hugged his legs. Avery decided to sit as well but far from him. They were both silent as they waited for the rescue to come.

Avery wanted to talk to him but she couldn’t find the right words to say. “Carson”

“Who asked you to do this? Is it Ji?”

Avery knew he would ask this and this was the perfect time to come clean. “At first, it was just me. I think by now you have found out what kind of person I am. I wasn’t really planning to target you or anything. But for some reason, you caught my attention.”

She waited for him to give any kind of response but he didn’t. So she decided to continue, “Then Ji came to me and said he’d help me with my plan in an exchange of convincing you not to be the CEO.”

This made Carson frown, “But you didn’t say anything” Avery looked down and smiled, “Because I do not agree with him. You deserve to be the CEO, Carson. I am not going to stop you from chasing your goal.”

His expression softened but he still seemed upset. “I know you’re not going to forgive me and it was wrong for me to leave you hanging like that. I’m sorry, Carson.”

“What else did you lie?”

She looked at him with curiosity. “About me? Nothing. All of my stories were true.”

“And you expect me to believe that now?”

She could feel her tears form in her eyes. “No.” She wasn’t used to this feeling. She wasn’t use to apologizing and making things right with men. She always put her head up high and didn’t care if anyone was hurt. All she cared was herself and her bestfriend.

But now, she cared about someone else.

A couple of minutes passed and the lights suddenly turned on. Carson immediately stood up while Avery waited for the elevator to move before standing up. Carson started pressing the buttons again.

Avery looked at Carson. She knew this would be the last time she would see him and she didn’t mind. It was the sacrifice she was willing to take. A punishment for all the wrong things she did to those innocent men.

When the elevator moved up, Avery fixed herself as she prepared her good bye. Carson seemed to be preoccupied with the elevator or maybe he didn’t care at all. When the door opened, Carson sighed as he walked out.

The walk to his office used to be short for Avery, but now it felt long as both of them were silent and awkward. Once he opened the door, Avery head to her table to get her things. She didn’t have much on her table just a small photo of her mom, her pencil holder, and other objects.

She grabbed these and placed it inside her bag. While Avery was clearing her desk, Carson kept on looking at her. Watching her leave kind of hurt him, but he kept his head high as he knew he didn’t do anything wrong in the first place.

When she was finished, she looked at him as he read his files. She wanted to say one last thing to him but she knew that it wasn’t worth it. Without a word, she left Carson and his world.

Avery knew it was a good idea. It was better to leave like this than make Carson think she just disappeared out of the blue. At least this time, there was a proper ending. She was able to tell him everything and apologize. It was enough.

Avery was by the door when she saw Ji smiling at her. She took a deep breath. Ji was her last hurdle before leaving everything else.

“Congratulations. You finally got rid of me.” She said as she stopped in front of him. Ji chuckled, it was a good thing that no one was around to hear them. “It was you who made the call not me. You couldn’t wait to leave that you had to start finding a backup plan.”

She nodded as a sign of defeat. “But now, you won’t get what you wanted. Carson will never let go of that position.” Ji smirked, “A man has fragile heart. He will fall in-love once again and that woman will convince him to let go of the position.”

She smirked, “Carson is not that weak. He won’t let that happen.” Ji raised an eyebrow, “You don’t know him at all. Just watch.” Avery tapped his shoulder. “Good luck with your plans.”

She didn’t wait for him to respond and left the building. She didn’t care if Carson fell in-love again with someone new. She didn’t mind if he finally let go of the position. Everything was out of her control.

When she reached her apartment, she dropped her body on her bed. She suddenly felt so tired that she just wanted to sleep for a week or month. But she couldn’t do that. She had to visit her mom and check up on Jane even if she already had Brix.

It was Avery’s first time to handle something like it. Suddenly she didn’t have the energy to look for a target until her phone rang that night.
