Chapter 30: Sunflowers

Avery laughed after hearing what he said, “Impossible.”

Alexander raised his eyebrow while Avery continued to laugh. “Alex, we both know my past. I will never fall inlove.” He just nodded as he took a sip, “We’ll never know if you keep on denying it.”

Avery stopped laughing because she knew deep inside, Alex might be right.

When Avery woke up after 2 days, she was surprised to see a call from Carson. Her heart immediately skipped a beat just by seeing his name. After meeting with Alex, she started reminding herself of everything. Her past, her rules, and her beliefs.

She thought she was composed, but just a simple call from him made her feel butterflies all over again.

“Hello?”

“Avery”

His deep voice echoed in her room as she put the call on loudspeaker. A smile appeared on her lips the moment he called her name.

“What is it?”

“Wait for me to go there. We need to go to work together.”

She immediately sat with his sudden statement. “What do you mean?” He paused for a bit, “You didn’t check the news? Everyone’s talking about us. I’m on my way there.”

Her eyes widened. She wasn’t prepared to meet him at all. She immediately went to her closet to find the best dress she had.

“Avery?”

“Yeah! I’ll prepare myself. Talk to you later!” Without waiting for his response, she hanged up.

Avery wasn’t good at last-minute plans. She had this routine she needed to follow but since Carson was already on his way, she had to speed things up.

She rushed to the shower as she contemplated what she should wear with the dressed she picked. She usually took a lot of time just mixing clothes but she didn’t have that time right now. Also, she didn’t bother checking what he said about the news.

In just 20 minutes, someone knocked on Avery’s door. She placed a clip by her hair and head to the door. When she opened the door, she was surprised to see him with flowers. It was a bouquet of sunflowers.

“What’s this?”

He smiled and handed it to her, “For you” She raised an eyebrow as she couldn’t understand what was happening. “What is happening?”

He looked around then entered her place. They were close to each other, making her heart beat fast again. Avery knew she needed to do something about these unnecessary feelings.

She immediately moved away as she held the bouquet close to her. The sunflowers smelled great and she wondered how he knew that this was her favorite flower. Carson held her arms as they moved to the living room.

He looked uneasy but happy at the same time. “Well, remember I told you that we’ll release an article about you? A lot of people anticipated it and they actually thought we were dating. Plus, someone leaked what happened between you and Jenny so now we’re the hottest couple.”

She laughed, “couple?” He nodded as he slowly released his grip.

“I’m sorry I dragged you into this.”

She raised an eyebrow. This could be a good thing. The more she did things for him, the more reason she had to spend time with him and get his trust.

“It’s fine. I told you I’ll help you, right?”

He smiled and nodded. “Is there something you want?” Her smile grew as he was starting to understand how their relationship worked. “What can you offer me?”

Before he could say anything, his phone rang. His eyes widen when he saw who the caller was. “Mom?”

When Avery researched Carson, she knew that his mom was not into business but she helped a lot of charities. His sister worked with their mom. Since both women were not interested in the limelight, Avery had no clue about their personalities.

Carson turned around to talk to her privately while Avery moved the sunflowers to her vase. This was the first time she received her favorite flowers as her ex-partners would just give her roses. Not that she didn’t mind.
“Avery?”

She turned almost immediately when he called her name. He bit his lip as he thought of the right words to say, “I think I need your help again. I will do whatever you want me to do if we survive this.” Avery smirked.
In no time, Avery and Carson were on their way to the office. His aura changed once again. He was serious and worried.

“Are we in trouble?”

Carson lightly laughed as he drove. “I still don’t know how to answer that, to be honest but I think it will depend on how you will act towards them. Right now, everyone loves you especially with what you did at the party.”
Avery felt shy with the compliment even if this wasn’t the first time she received it. She wasn’t nervous at all. She was good with people, even rich women. So when she and Carson reached the building, she was confident that she could ace it.

But all her strength disappeared the moment Carson opened the door. Inside were his whole family waiting for them to arrive. His mom and sister were on Avery’s seat, checking her things while his dad was smoking by the huge table.

They looked like they came from a soap opera and Avery was about to get roasted with their insults. She knew Mr. Lee wasn’t as kind as he looked. Avery gulped.

When the family heard the door open, they turned to the direction. Mrs. Lee smiled widely, “You must be Avery.”
