Chapter 42: Her Next Move

Avery frowned as she saw Ji’s facial expression. A smile formed on his lips as he watched the scene. He knew this was going to happen that is why he invited Carson for lunch.

“I….” Avery’s voice cracked when Carson walked away. For some reason, she couldn’t lie to his face. She couldn’t say her alibi because of how he looked like. She feared that this day would come and she would see him this hurt.

Tim turned to Ji who was pleased and he couldn’t help but frown. He turned to Avery who watched Carson leave the restaurant. At that moment, he knew that she really loved him and there was something that drove her to do this.

Her hands trembled as she turned to Tim. Tim, on the other hand, lightly smiled. “I guess Carson thought of it differently. But thank you for helping me decide a gift for my wife.” Avery’s eyes widen while Ji raised an eyebrow.

Tim turned to Ji, “I’m sorry. This is a huge misunderstanding. Since you’re the one who brought Carson here, mind helping my friend Avery clean the issue? Or was this your plan to be the CEO?”

Ji chuckled but his smile was obviously fake. “What is their relationship got to do with my goal? This is a lovers’ quarrel, Tim.” Tim then turned to Avery who seemed to be confused about what she should do.

“Go after him. Explain your side.”

Ji turned to Avery, “Yeah. That sounds like a good idea, Avery.”

Avery stood up, “Thank you, Tim.” She then turned to Ji, “I’m not the only one going down here. You’re going with me.” Ji’s smile faded and she left.

As Carson walked to the building, he suddenly understood everything. He noticed how those men looked at her at the party as if they knew her. He remembered her dinner with Ran. He also felt weird that John would attack her out of nowhere.

She also made her move to get Carson’s attention. Her aggressive moves made it clear her intentions but Carson was too blinded to admit it. But now, he was sure. Tim wasn’t the type to meet another woman. Tim was married, just like Ran and John. Maybe Ji was one of her men as well.

Avery didn’t know what she was doing. She wasn’t the type to run after someone, especially a man. When her father left them, she just let him be. But for the first time in her life, she is running after someone. For the first time, she was willing to apologize. For the first time, she wanted to fix a relationship, not because of money.

Carson was about to enter the elevator when he heard the sound of heels coming from the entrance. The sound was too familiar so he entered the elevator and clicked the 5th floor. He was hoping that it would immediately close but to his dismay, Avery was able to catch up with him.

She was panting from running and clothes weren’t really for extreme movements. When she entered the elevator, he didn’t bother looking at her. She seemed uneasy but he won’t say anything. She knew he was conscious of fake people and yet she ended being one.

“Carson” Her voice was different from the other times she called him. It was sad and regretful. She wanted to hold his arm but she was afraid. Her body was trembling in fear.

He stood firmly as he waited for the 5th floor. “I... I don’t know what to say but I’m so sorry for everything. I didn’t want it to end this way that was why…”

He cut her off, “You’re fired.” She took a deep breath and looked down. She expected this. All of it that was why she should’ve left. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“Is that why you didn’t respond when I told you I love you?”
He still wasn’t looking at her but his vibe was cold as ice. Avery frowned a bit as she was finding the right words to let him know her feelings. “I was afraid. I knew what I was doing was wrong but I didn’t lie to you. I was honest the whole time.”

He smirked, it felt like he was a different person and she understood it. She would accept anything he would do at this point. “Please stop talking to me. I will let you get your things at my office but after that, I don’t want to see you again.”

Those harsh words reminded her of her father. Everything that was happening in the elevator reminded her of her fear. The main reason she didn’t want to fall in love. The reason she hated men. But for some reason, she couldn’t hate Carson.

She understood perfectly what he was feeling. She looked away. It was a dead end. Anything she says won’t change his mind. “Okay. I understand. I’m sorry for everything.”

Carson tried to look at her from his peripheral view. She looked sad but he couldn’t do anything because he was mad as well. He couldn’t accept what she did.

The elevator was about to reach the fifth floor when it suddenly stopped. Carson and Avery were both surprised at the sudden movement of the elevator. The light started to blink and Avery started to worry.

Carson started pressing the emergency button in hopes that someone would know what happened. But to their dismay, the button was no longer working. Avery got her phone to call someone but there was no signal.

“Is this part of your plan?” He suddenly said as he continued pressing the button. She felt hurt when she heard those words. But she didn’t bother fighting him. “No. I am as confused as you are.”

Carson looked at her sad eyes. Despite everything that happened, he still believed her. “There’s no signal here” She suddenly commented as she showed him her phone. She then turned to the CCTV and waved her hands in an attempt to catch the attention of the personnel.

Just then, the lights went out.
