Wedding Bells?
*Hezzlie*
My mother is waiting for me downstairs. She gives me a big hug. “I’m so glad you’re okay,” she whispers in my ear.
“I’m fine,” I assure her. Mom isn’t used to me being able to defend myself the way that I can, but once she gets a better handle on her own magic, she should have a better understanding of all that I can do.
“Let’s not waste daylight,” Veronica tells Mom. “Let’s get back outside. And you–” She points at me. “Don’t forget you have a test in the morning.”
“Yes, ma’am,” I say, not caring that I sound a bit rude. Veronica tweaks an eyebrow at me but otherwise says nothing as she escorts my reluctant mother back outside.
Rowan sighs beside me, and I turn toward him. “Do you think they’re all going to be okay?” I ask.
He nods. “Yeah, I think so. I’m irritated it came to me punching Dean in the face, though.”
I reach for his other hand and rub it. It’s not even scratched. Still, I imagine it would be hard to punch your best friend in the jaw because he was going after your girlfriend–or whatever the hell I am. I remember then what he’d called me, Dean’s soon-to-be Luna Queen, or however he’d put it, and I look up at him, my eyes wide.
Rowan notices the change in my expression immediately and lifts an eyebrow. “Everything okay?”
I nod. “Yeah. I’m just hoping that Abby is okay now and doesn’t try to kill Dean–and that Dean doesn’t try to kill James.” I can’t tell him what I’m really thinking about right now because I don’t want him to know that I hope he proposes soon.
He gives me a small smile that tells me he’s still worried. I’m starting to figure out his different expressions pretty quickly. I suppose that’s part of being a mate. “I think I’ll go call your father and see if he has an explanation for what happened to Abby.”
“What are the chances he’ll tell you the truth?” I almost laugh at the thought.
“It depends on how I play it.” He has a mischievous glimmer in his eyes that tells me that he’s up to something. I have a feeling that if anyone can pull one over on my dear old dad it’s my mate.
We walk upstairs together, still holding hands. It feels nice. Natural. When we get to the junction of the hallway where he has to turn right to go to his office and I have to turn left to go to my room, he spins me around.
“See you later?” His lips are mere millimeters from mine, and his breath smells minty and fresh.
“I’m not planning on going anywhere,” I say with a sly grin.
Rowan leans down and presses his mouth to mine, and when I part my lips for him, a spark surges through my entire body. I forget all about Abby, Veronica, impending war, all of it, and want to drag him to the closest bedroom.
He is a bit more disciplined than I am and eventually releases me. He smiles down at me and then turns to walk away. I watch him until he reaches the door to his office. He turns and looks over his shoulder and gives me a little wave. I wave back like a schoolgirl with a crush on a football star.
Only this isn’t just a crush. With a sigh, I turn on my heel and walk to my room, plopping down on my bed and then falling backward so that I’m looking up at the ceiling.
It’s hard for me to imagine someone like Rowan is going to be my husband. He’s strikingly handsome but also quite powerful. Most of the guys I hung around with in high school were either outcasts or bad boys. None of them ever made me feel the way that he does.
The idea that we’ll get married one day soon still doesn’t seem real to me. I don’t even know how weddings work here. Is it like it is back home, or is it something else?
I’m starting to think about flowers, my dress, what colors I’d like when I hear a knock on my open door. I sit up to see Natalie standing there. “Hi,” I say. “How are you?”
She’s not wearing her maid’s uniform, so I figure this is a social call. “I’m okay. How are you? I heard there was some excitement earlier.”
She was here for the conversation where Abby said she liked James, so I quickly fill her in on everything that happened. Her eyes get bigger with every statement. By the time I’m done, it takes her a few minutes to process it all.
“Wow! The Alpha actually punched Beta Dean in the face?” She covers her mouth and giggles a little.
“Yeah. Can you believe it? Anyway, I hope the excitement is done–for now. Something tells me the excitement is never over with." I roll my eyes and shake my head. There is a war coming for sure, and that’s certain to bring more excitement. “Anyway, how are you? Is everything okay?”
“I’m good,” she says with a reassuring nod. “Today’s my day off, so I get to dress like a normal person.” Natalie pulls at the hem of the sleeve of her sweater, and I can tell she came here for a reason.
“Your outfit is cute,” I say with a friendly smile, hoping that she’ll just say whatever it is that’s bothering her.
“Thanks.” Natalie lets out a deep breath. “Can I ask you something?”
“Anything,” I tell her quickly. She’s my friend–one of the only ones I have left, and it doesn’t matter to me at all that she’s a maid and I’m the queen-to-be or whatever. “What’s up?”
Natalie inhales again. “Can you talk to Rowan for me? I need him to do something for me, and I think that you’re the only one who can get him to say yes.”
My eyebrows furrow as I imagine what she could possibly be asking. “I’m happy to talk to him about anything, Natalie. What’s going on?”
She’s still hesitating, so I just wait with the friendly smile still plastered on my face. Finally, she says, “I want to leave.”
