Trapped

*Hezzlie*

The three of us stay in our wolf form as Tony drives as fast as he can. The problem is that the only easy way to get from Darksky to Moonstyrker territory is to cross the bridge, and we have to get over it before the king finds out what we’re up to and shuts it down.
It’s not a drawbridge, so he’ll have to try to block it off someway. I’m sure that Zeb or others have alerted him that we are on the lam.
I have no idea where we are as we barrel down a dirt road that kicks up gravel and dirt. I would worry about his paint being chipped, but that’s the least of my worries at the moment. I want to whip my head around and look behind us, but I’m not used to having this huge snout, and I don’t think I’d be able to see through the dust anyway. I dig my paws into the edge of the seat but try not to sink my claws in because I don’t want to rip the leather. I’m in the center, so I keep lurching between the front two seats, and I’m afraid I might fly through the windshield if Tony slams on the brakes.
We drive for about twenty minutes, blazing down side roads, past farms and little houses I can barely see through the cloud of dust. As we travel, I contemplate calling out to Rowan through the mind-link. Maybe he can do something to make sure that bridge is clear when we get there, but it’s the middle of the night, and I think it might not be information he wants to hear from me–or anyone.
So I keep my thoughts to myself and try to prepare for what might happen. At least I know I can use my powers in my wolf form.
‘The bridge is right up here,’ Aiden says in my mind. ‘I’m guessing they’ve got it blocked off.’
“Then I’ll drive right through them,” Tony says, but I hear a shade of hesitation in his voice, and I’m not sure he means that. It’d be hard to plow right through a bunch of wolves–especially in a car this small.
We skid around a corner and out onto a paved road, and now, I can see. Ahead of us, the headlights reflect off the beams of the bridge–and dozens of glowing eyes. Wolves stand in our way, stacked several deep. Beyond that, there are some kind of temporary barriers set up between us as well. They look to be made of heavy wood or metal, and I have a feeling, if Tony drives into them, his car isn’t going to make it all the way across the bridge.
“What do you want me to do?” Tony asks, not slowing down.
‘Uhm, I don’t know,’ Aiden hesitates. Next to me, Abby begins to whimper. She can’t hear what we’re talking about. ‘Uh… stop. STOP!’
Tony slams on his breaks, and I go flying, just as I thought I might. I feel Aiden’s paw bite into my shoulder as he tries to keep me from heading through the windshield, but he’s no match for inertia.
Before I hit the glass, I lift a paw and send out a beam of light toward the windshield. It shatters, but the glass blows out. I keep my paw in place and continue to use my power to blow that glass right at the wolves. I was capable of levitating in my room back at the castle, so I channel that now. The wolves below me, many of them wiping at their eyes thanks to the glass, stare up at me, some trying to jump up and grab me, but I keep gliding and land about three hundred feet behind them on the middle of the bridge.
Most of the wolves swivel to face me at the same time that my brother and the others get out of the car. I’ve never tried to move three people at once. In fact, I’ve never even tried to move anyone other than myself. Yet, when I lift a paw and point it over the heads of the onslaught of advancing wolves, I’m able to lift all three of them at once. They go sailing through the air, and I hear Abby howling in shock.
It’s difficult to keep control of all three of them, even though I know that the wolves barreling down on me are about to reach me. I manage to drop the three of them gently behind me and then change my focus, using whatever energy I can muster to shoot a beam at the wolves that are closing in on me. The blast of light affects them much the same way that it did when I hit Zeb with it. The scent of burning fur hits my lungs, as does the sound of sizzling and whimpers and moans of wolves. It’s clear I’ve burned them, and many of the wolves closest to me fall to the ground, tripping up the wolves behind them.
I hear Aiden’s voice in my head. ‘Run, Hezzlie! Run!’
It’s difficult to rip my eyes away from the writhing wolves, but I have to. I turn around and run as fast as I can toward the other end of the bridge, but I’m exhausted. It seems using my powers makes me more tired than I realized, and as we step off the end of the bridge, I feel like my paws are made of concrete. How am I going to make it all the way to Moonstryker Mansion?
I hear another gasp, and this time, I look up to see Abby slowing to my left. I’m not sure what’s going on at first, but then I see them.
In the woods around us, as we enter Moonstryker territory, a dozen or so wolves appear. We turn around, and they’re behind us, too. More join their forces. We are grossly outnumbered.
We’ve managed to get out of Darksky’s territory, but now, we are an unknown party infiltrating a foreign land without permission of the Alpha King. I really should’ve said something to Rowan.
My brother and Tony, who is now in his wolf form, growl. I want to shift, to explain who we are, who I am, and why I’m here, but as I try to conjure up my human body, my legs give out, and I fall to the ground, crumpled in an exhausted mess. The last thing I see before everything goes black is the shadow of a wolf closing in on me.
