Chapter 52 - Last warning
Wren Austin made her way over to Hunter Tequeido’s hideout with a frown on her face. She was upset after what happened and she wasn’t sure why he asked to see her.
She’s never felt disgusted after being with a client like she was with Ted. Her system proved how repulsed she was, and how, her skin started to do the same.
It itched. It felt like a thousand roaches were climbing her body. She wanted to go home, burn the clothes she had on and spend endless hours in the shower to get the feel of his skin off her.
But she would have to suck it in for a while because she was standing before huge mahogany doors that separated her from Hunter. Her hands were heavy as she struggled to lift them and place a knock on the door, but her hands were left hanging when the door flew open.
But this time, it wasn’t Reik. And she was grateful for that. She didn’t want him making fun of her from the look of disgust plastered on her face.
“What took you long? Hunter has been waiting” the man stepped aside as he spoke, making way for the brunette to walk in.
Those were words she didn’t want to hear. That she had kept Hunter waiting.
Hunter wouldn’t just ask her for no reason at all, and she figured after the little unplanned trip she took had something to do with it.
The older man took Wren’s hand in a firm grip, leading her to the room where she usually met up with Hunter. Then, he pushed her in making her stumble on her feet.
The room she was in was different from the other rooms. This one was spacious and fancily decorated. Paintings on the walls and so many other things made her understand that she was in his office, plus the loud slam on the door made her gasp.
Then his gaze finally landed on hers and the blonde felt herself swallow a visible knot.
“Ah, Wren. My favourite person. Have a seat” Hunter Tequeido exclaimed with excitement in his voice that frightened Wren the more. She thought his usual calm and soothing voice was creepy and terrific, but the high-pitched voice was more horrific.
He has never spoken to her with so much excitement in his voice and that irked Wren. Plus the fact that he had received her in his office and without his little thugs.
She has never, in the years of working under Hunter been in this room. And she didn’t know what to expect.
“So, how have you been,” he asked with the same enthusiasm in his voice.
Hunter’s mood was freaking her out. She had come here, ready to hear what he had to say and maybe, fight back even a little. She had prepared herself for everything except this.
“It’s okay. You don’t have to answer” Wren has never been so grateful for being cut off. She could only hope the next time he spoke, he wouldn’t say something that made her uncomfortable.
“So, how did you like my little gift?” Hunter uttered, the smile on his face bigger than before.
She knew Ted Jr. Rolland being her client for the night was no coincidence. Wren didn’t want to know what business went down with him, but she knew his presence tonight was punishment.
It had to be. After all, it was the same thing he did when he accused her of trying to steal from him and escaping town, which by the way, she was sure Luke was behind.
Although now, Wren wasn’t sure what she was being punished for.
“You see, that was my little gift for you. Brilliant right?”
He was teasing her. He was making fun of her.
“I heard rumours about your attempt at escaping and I was not pleased. So, I had to teach you a lesson” he clarified.
Called it. She put two and two together and bingo.
“Hunter, I don’t know where you’re getting these stories from, but I assure you, I wasn’t trying to escape. I know you probably don’t care but-“
“You’re right. I don’t care” he cut her off.
The expression on his face was stoic. His broad shoulders had suddenly gone rigid and his posture made her understand that he was way past joking. And somewhere, in the back of her mind, Wren Austin missed it.
“I like you Wren, and this is why I chose to punish you this way. But you keep pushing my buttons and force me to go overboard, and when I do, trust me, you may not live to explain it to the next person” Hunter gradually stood from his leaned and as every word left his mouth, he leaned in towards the blonde, making her shiver in her seat from fear.
Wren always thought it was absurd when people said they got so scared that they usually piss themselves. But right now, she understood that it was indeed possible.
She was petrified.
Then, Hunter exclaimed in excitement whilst sitting back. “I know you are a smart girl. Fierce, but smart and you know better than to upset me. Don’t you?” Hunter tilted his head quizzically.
The blonde wasn’t sure if his question was rhetorical. Even if it wasn’t, Wren didn’t give him a reply. Instead, she gradually stood from her seat and began to make her way to the door.
“By the way, I know you didn’t have sex with my son, Luke. You might do what you do, but you have standards and I knew you figured something out. However, I can’t seem to understand why you didn’t do the same with Ted. Weren’t you two really close to the extent that you considered him a father?”
Wren knew that Hunter wasn’t asking out of curiosity. He just wanted to see her hurt.
“Unless of course, you have daddy issues” he added.
Wren fisted the doorknob until she saw her knuckles turn white. It was taking every goddam self-restraint not to lash out at him.
“Which is understandable considering your father was a piece of shit who died without paying me the money he owes me” he explained.
At least, Wren could agree with him on that. Her father was a piece of shit.
“You know, I should make you pay me back” Hunter pondered to himself.
Wren’s breathing had become rasp. She was seconds away from telling Hunter off.
She took in too deep breaths, then she turned the doorknob and walked away, but not without hearing him laugh out loud.
Wren decided not to talk back.
She had just concocted the perfect plan.
And it was going to crush his ego.
What better revenge than that?
